Leaves fall to the ground, leaving behind gnarled, twisting, lifeless limbs. Gone is the balmy breath of
summer that warmed the skin; instead, icy air bites deeply into our bones. Daylight is fleeting; the
darkness of night overshadows evermore. Emptiness is all that remains as the animals retreat for
winter. In the north woods, eerie silence is all that is heard, instead of the haunting call of the loons
over the misty morning. Autumn passes on to winter; life passes away. In these autumn days, we see
the natural cycle of life and death all around us. It is fitting, therefore, during these days that we turn
our minds and attention to those who have lived before us here on earth and have passed on, passed
into eternity. Traditionally, the Church remembers the souls of the faithful departed throughout the
month of November. Prayers for the souls in Purgatory are encouraged most especially during this
month. From the beginning of the Church, the faithful have offered prayers for the souls of the faithful
departed, both in public prayer (Mass) and private prayer. Throughout the history of the Church, many
saints have received visions of Holy Souls and of Purgatory. One of these saints is St. Gertrude the Great.
I want to highlight St. Gertrude and her contribution to teaching the
Church about the importance of praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory
because her feast day is this week, November 16. The 13th century was a period
of history in the Church filled with great saints: St. Anthony of Padua, St.
Francis, St. Dominic, St. Clare, St. Boniface, St. Bonaventure, and St. Thomas
Aquinas. Gertrude was born during this time in 1256, in Thuringia (Germany).
Probably an orphan, at the age of five, she went to live in a Benedictine abbey,
were she was raised and lived the rest of her life. Gertrude was an extraordinary
student and very intelligent. Around the age of 25, she had her first vision of
Jesus. Gertrude abandoned the study of philosophy to devote herself to study of
the Bible, Church Fathers, and prayer. St. Gertrude is one of the great mystics
of the Church, receiving many visions, including Jesus and His Sacred Heart,
and of Holy Souls and Purgatory. St. Gertrude showed tender sympathy
towards the souls in purgatory and urged prayers for them. During her life, St.
Gertrude had the privilege of seeing the Holy Souls and conversing with them.
Their approach caused her not alarm. As we read in the Scriptures, “perfect love
drives out fear” (1 John 4:18). St. Gertrude talked with the Holy Souls and
questioned them about their life. It was one of the gifts God gave her to instruct
us about many things.
St. Gertrude described an experience following the death of Brother
John, procurator of the monastery. He had served the community faithfully for
many years. In this vision, she had seen his soul leave his body. She then
describes that she saw his good works forming a ladder, which he had to mount
step by step to heaven. Yet, since it is impossible to avoid small imperfections
and sins, and nothing imperfect can enter heaven, his soul had difficulty
climbing the ladder. He had hardly climbed a few rungs when the whole ladder shook violently and was about to break.
St. Gertrude describes how the prayers of the community came to the brother’s assistance at that moment of falling, as if a
hand stretched out, to help him mount the ladder higher towards heaven. She teaches us that our prayers for the faithful
departed are like helping hands that assist, steady, soothe, and lift up the Holy Souls.
In her mystical experiences, St. Gertrude learned that our Lord desires for us to pray for the souls in Purgatory.
Jesus said to her, "I accept with highest pleasure what is offered to Me for the poor souls, for I long inexpressibly to
have near Me those for whom I paid so great a price. By the prayers of thy loving soul, I am induced to free a
prisoner from purgatory as often as thou dost move thy tongue to utter a word of prayer." Tradition holds that St.
Gertrude the Great was told by our Lord that the following prayer, when piously recited, would release 1,000 souls from
Purgatory.
ETERNAL FATHER, I OFFER YOU THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF THY DIVINE SON, JESUS,
IN UNION WITH THE MASSES SAID THROUGHOUT THE WORLD TODAY, FOR ALL THE HOLY SOULS
IN PURGATORY, FOR SINNERS EVERYWHERE, FOR SINNERS IN THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH, FOR
THOSE IN MY OWN HOME AND IN MY FAMILY. AMEN.
If Jesus desires for us to pray them, why don’t we? I find it very odd that great saints and mystics, like St.
Gertrude, teach us about Purgatory and the need to pray for the Holy Souls, but we Catholics, living in the 21st century, do
not listen because we think we know better than them. We mistakenly think that they were wrong and we are always right.
Sadly, many Catholics today don’t pray for the souls in Purgatory because we either don’t believe in Purgatory (which is
erroneous), or we incorrectly believe that, like the Blessed Mother, our souls automatically go straight to heaven, so souls
don’t need prayers (which is misguided).
As part of their program, I have asked our school and Religious Education program to be mindful of the poor and
hungry by bringing in non-perishable food items, which we will donate to Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities helps to
feed the poor in our area; they are our neighbors. I would like to invite all parishioners to do the same. If you would like
to help the poor and hungry in our area, please bring non-perishable food items to the narthex and leave them in the corner
by the papal flag and picture of Pope Francis the weekend of Nov. 22. I would also like to ask for a few volunteers to
bring over these food supplies to Catholic Charities at St. Blase the days before Thanksgiving. Please see me if interested
in helping. Please pray for the souls in Purgatory. Pray this prayer of St. Gertrude the Great. Pray the Rosary or Divine
Mercy. Offer Masses. Don’t forget or neglect the Holy Souls. May our Blessed Mother, Undoer of Knots, help us with
her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us.

Parking Lot - I have had questions regarding the barricades.
Due to the construction, and the number of cars who use our
parking lot as a short cut, it became necessary to create a safety
zone for our children. We needed a place where they could wait
after school, and where parents could drop them off and not
have to worry about the traffic in the lot in the morning.
I understand it makes accessing our small parking lot a little
more difficult during the week, but the barricades are too
cumbersome to put out and take down on a daily basis. The
small lot is accessible from 72nd court through the turn-around,
and we have begun moving the barricades at the end of the day
in order to leave room for a car to drive through to get to the
back lot.
Chrome Books - Our older children say the Chrome Books we
purchased, (thank you Ladies of the Rosary for your help!), have
made accessing our on-line science program much easier. The
extended battery life means we can make it through a day with
one charge.
KidStuff - Our KidStuff sale has come to an end, we thank all
of our school and parish families who your support. We do
have several books left should anyone wish to purchase one.
Help Us Reach Our Goal! Our school saves the Box Tops for
Education. Last year we earned approximately $700.00. Our
goal for this year is $1,000.00. At the current time we have
$350.00. If you purchase items with the box tops on them,
please save them for us and put in the collection bin in the
Narthex.

Las hojas caen al suelo, dejando atrás ramas sin vida. Se ha ido el aliento cálido del verano que calentaba la piel; en
cambio, el aire helado muerde profundamente en nuestros huesos. La luz del día es efímera; la oscuridad de la noche
eclipsa siempre. El vacío es todo lo que queda ya que los animales se retiran por el invierno. En los bosques del norte,
extraño silencio es todo lo que se escucha, en lugar de la llamada inquietante de los somormujos más de la niebla por la
mañana. Otoño pasa al invierno; la vida pasa. En estos días de otoño, vemos el ciclo natural de la vida y de la muerte a
nuestro alrededor. Conviene, por lo tanto, durante estos días que nos volvemos nuestra mente y la atención a los que han
vivido antes que nosotros aquí en la tierra y han pasado, pasado a la eternidad. Tradicionalmente, la Iglesia recuerda a las
almas de los fieles difuntos durante el mes de noviembre. Oraciones por las almas del Purgatorio son alentados muy

que he pagado un precio muy alto. Por las oraciones de tu alma amorosa, estoy inducido para liberar a un prisionero del purgatorio tan
a menudo como tú hubieres movido tu lengua para pronunciar una palabra de la oración ". La tradición sostiene que Santa Gertrudis la
Grande le fue dicho por nuestro Señor que la siguiente oración, cuando recitada piadosamente liberaría 1.000 Almas del Purgatorio.

EN TODAS PARTES Y POR LOS PECADORES EN LA IGLESIA UNIVERSAL, POR LOS DE MI PROPIA CASA Y EN MI
FAMILIA. AMEN.
Si Jesús quiere que oremos, ¿por qué no lo hacemos? Me parece muy extraño que grandes santos y místicos como Santa Gertrudis, nos
enseñan sobre el Purgatorio y la necesidad de orar por las Almas Santas, pero nosotros, los católicos, viviendo en el siglo 21, no escuchan,
porque creemos que sabemos mejor que ellos. Equivocadamente pensamos que estaban equivocados y nosotros siempre tenemosla razón.
Tristemente, muchos católicos hoy en día no ruegan por las Almas del Purgatorio, ya que o bien no creemos en el Purgatorio (esto un error), o
incorrectamente creen que, al igual que la Santísima Madre, nuestras almas van de forma automática directamente al cielo, por lo que las almas
no necesitan oraciones (esto es un error).
Como parte de su programa, le he pedido a nuestra escuela de educación religiosa a ser conscientes de los pobres y hambrientos
mediante la incorporación de alimentos enlatados que vamos a donar a las Caridades Católicas. Las Caridades Católicas ayuda alimentar a los
pobres en nuestra zona; ellos son nuestros vecinos. Me gustaría invitar a todos los feligreses a hacer lo mismo. Si usted le gustaría ayudar a los
pobres y hambrientos en nuestra área, por favor traiga alimentos enlatados en el nártex y dejarlos en la esquina de la bandera papal y la imagen
del Papa Francisco el fin de la semana de noviembre 22. También me gustaría pedir que a algunos voluntarios ayuden a traer estos alimentos a
las Caridades Católicas en San Blas los días antes de Acción de Gracias. Por favor, dejeme saber si está interesado en ayudar.
Por favor oren por las almas del Purgatorio. Reze la oración de Santa Gertrudis la Grande. Rezar el Rosario o de la Divina
Misericordia. Ofrecer Misas. No se olvide de las Santas Almas. Que nuestra Madre Santísima, Desatadora de nudos, nos ayude con su cuidado
maternal y San José ruega por nosotros.

Liście lecą z drzew, zostają nagie, poskręcane gałęzie. Słońce już tak nie grzeje, jak w lecie – zimny wiatr kąsa
do szpiku kości. Dzień trwa krótko, za to noce coraz dłuższe. Zwierzęta powoli zapadają w sen zimowy, a
świat coraz bardziej ogarnia pustka. W tutejszych zasnutych mgłą lasach Północy króluje złowróżbna cisza.
Wszędzie wokół nas widzimy teraz odwieczny cykl życia i śmierci. Jesień powoli przechodzi w zimę; życie
przemija. W takich okolicznościach właściwym jest zwrócenie naszych myśli ku tym, których nie ma już z
nami. Listopad jest tradycyjnie miesiącem, w którym Kościół zachęca do modlitw za dusze czyśćcowe. Już od
pierwszych wieków Kościoła, wierni przywiązywali szczególną wagę do modlitw w intencji zmarłych,
zarówno w czasie Mszy, jak i podczas modlitw prywatnych. Wielu świętych doświadczało wizji dusz
czyśćcowych. Jedną z takich postaci była święta Gertruda Wielka.
Wspomnienie św. Gertrudy przypada w tym tygodniu: 16 listopada. Dlatego też pragnę przybliżyć
Wam jej wkład w kościelną naukę o czyśćcu. XIII wiek należał
w historii Kościoła do wielkich świętych: św. Antoniego z Padwy, św. Franciszka z
Asyżu, św. Dominika, św. Klary, św. Bonifacego, św. Bonawentury oraz św. Tomasza
z Akwinu. W tym też okresie (w roku 1256, w niemieckiej Turyngii) urodziła się św.
Gertruda. Wcześnie została sierotą. W wieku pięciu lat zamieszkała w
benedyktyńskim opactwie i tu spędziła całe swoje życie. Święta odznacza się
bystrością umysłu i była żądna wiedzy. Pierwszej wizji Jezusa doświadczyła w wieku
25 lat. Porzuciła filozofię i poświęciła się modlitwie, studiowaniu Biblii oraz nauk
Ojców Kościoła. Święta Gertruda należy do grona wielkich mistyków Kościoła. Przez
całe życie otrzymywała wizje Jezusa, Jego Najświętszego Serca oraz dusz w czyśćcu.
Św. Gertruda wykazywała ogromne nabożeństwo dla dusz czyśćcowych, rozmawiała
z nimi i propagowała modlitwy w ich intencji. Tak bliski kontakt ze zmarłymi nie
byłej dla niej powodem do niepokoju. Zapisane jest bowiem: „Doskonała miłość
usuwa lęk” (1 List św. Jana 4:18). Św. Gertruda rozmawiała ze zmarłymi, a ci
opowiadali jej o swoim życiu. Dzięki temu darowi od Boga, Gertruda przekazuje nam
ważne lekcje na temat wielu spraw.
Święta Gertruda opisała wizję, w której dusza brata Jana (założyciela
opactwa, który przez lata wiernie służył swojej społeczności) opuszcza jego ciało.
Wszystkie dobre uczynki brata Jana ułożyły się następnie na kształt drabiny, którą
musiał pokonać stopień po stopniu, aby dostać się do nieba. Ale jako że nie sposób
było uniknąć drobnych grzechów na szczeblach (a żaden grzech nie prawa znaleźć się
w niebie), dusza zmarłego miała trudności w pokonywaniu drabiny. Zmarłemu udało
się wejść ledwie po paru stopniach, kiedy nagle cała drabina zaczęła się trząść. Ale w
tej chwili słabości, gorące modlitwy całej społeczności pomogły bratu Janowi dotrzeć
do celu. Św. Gertruda naucza, iż nasze modlitwy są dla zmarłych właśnie takim
wsparciem, nieocenioną pomocą na ich drodze do nieba. W trakcie swoich mistycznych objawień, św. Gertruda dowiedziała się, iż
Jezus uwalniać będzie z czyśćca jedną duszę tak często, jak często święta będzie zanosić modlitwy w ich intencji. Według tradycji,
św. Gertruda Wielka otrzymała od Pana następującą modlitwę. Odmawiana pokornie i ze czcią, owa modlitwa może wyzwolić z
czyśćca tysiąc dusz:
Ojcze Przedwieczny, ofiaruję Ci Najdroższą Krew Boskiego Syna Twego, Pana naszego Jezusa Chrystusa w
połączeniu ze wszystkimi Mszami Świętymi dzisiaj na całym świecie odprawianymi, za dusze w Czyśćcu cierpiące, za
umierających, za grzeszników na świecie, za grzeszników w Kościele powszechnym, za grzeszników w mojej rodzinie, a także
w moim domu. Amen.
Skoro Chrystus pragnie, abyśmy odmawiali tę modlitwę, dlaczego tego nie czynimy? Wielcy mistycy Kościoła uczą nas
pięknych modlitw za dusze zmarłych, lecz my katolicy w XXI wcale nie korzystamy z ich nauk. Wydaje nam się, że wiemy lepiej.
Wydaje nam się, że zawsze mamy rację, a oni są w błędzie. Wielu współczesnych katolików nie modli się za dusze czyśćcowe, bo
albo w czyściec nie wierzy (co jest błędem), albo myślimy, że wszystkie dusze są jak dusza Maryi i idą wprost do nieba (a to jest z
kolei niewłaściwe myślenie).
Poprosiłem uczniów naszej szkoły, a także członków Programu katechetycznego, aby zorganizowali zbiórkę żywności dla
najbiedniejszych, którą przekażemy organizacji charytatywnej Catholic Charities. CC wspiera biednych ludzi z naszej okolicy –
naszych sąsiadów i bliźnich. Jeżeli chcielibyście pomóc najbiedniejszym z naszej okolicy, przynieście 22 listopada paczki z darami
do narteksu i zostawcie je przy zdjęciu papieża Franciszka. Proszę również kilku ochotników, aby przed Świętem Dziękczynienia

The Mount Carmel Mothers’ Club is
hosting a “Jingle Mingle with Me at MC” holiday
