Blaise lived in a cave on Mount Argeus. According to legend, sick animals would come to him on their own for help, but would never disturb him at prayer. Agricola, governor of Cappadocia, came to Sebaste to persecute Christians. His huntsmen went into the forests of Argeus to find wild animals for the arena games, and found many waiting outside Blaise's cave. Discovered in prayer, Blaise was arrested, and Agricola tried to get him to recant his faith. While in prison, Blaise ministered to and healed fellow prisoners, including saving a child who was choking on a fish bone; this led to the blessing of throats on Blaise's feast day. HANDMAIDS E. Picchietti Our Blessed Lord has called home our parishioner Edwin Max Kurland for whom we promise our prayers. Baptism Preparation Classes If you are anticipating the baptism of your child, and this is your first child to be baptized at St. Ferdinand Church, please accept our heartiest congratulations! Parents are required to attend a Baptism preparation class prior to the Baptism of your first child at St. Ferdinand Church. Classes are usually held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the rectory. The dates of the next classes are: February 4, 2004 and April 21, 2004 If you have any questions about the class or dates of upcoming classes please call Joe Kummer at 773/6223022 ext. 366. Since we do not celebrate the sacrament of Baptism during the penitential season of Lent, if you wish to have your child baptized during the Easter Season, then you will need to participate in one of these classes. Please call the rectory at 622-5900 to make your reservation at the class of your choice. As Catholics we take seriously the responsibility to practice the faith we profess and to instill our CatholicChristian values in our children. February 1, 2004 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Monday’s feast of the Presentation is a day for blessing of candles. Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the Church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle’s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. You must pour your life out like Christ so that you may be filled with the light of his love. —James Field, (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Blessed candles will be available in the church after the 7:00 and 8:00 Masses. A donation would be appreciated. St. Ferdinand Catholic School: A Faith-Filled Future! Thank you, Saint Ferdinand School Board Nominating Committee Liaison: Gene Szaban February 1, 2004 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Five Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Today we celebrate Seminary Sunday in all the parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. In fact, we celebrate the lives of the many priests who serve you so faithfully each day and those who are preparing to serve you with that same charity in the future. The love of a priest for his people makes present Christ’s love for his Church. "A Night in Tuscany" Even with the events of recent months, one thing continued each day in this parish. A good and dedicated priest continued to say Mass; baptize your children; witness marriages; visit the sick and bury your loved ones. In this trying time, our priests have never stopped caring about you, your children and your parish. St. Ferdinand Annual Dinner Dance Saturday, February 21, 2004 This upcoming Seminary Sunday please pray for vocations to the priesthood and support our seminarians. As well, please take a moment to thank the priests who serve you so faithfully each day as they bring the love and healing power of Christ to you. 6:30-7:30 PM - Cocktails & Hor d'oeuvres 7:30-9:00 PM - Dinner with wine 9:00-Midnight - Dancing under the Tuscan stars in "Piazza St. Ferdinand" May God continue to bless you and your family with His choicest blessings. Page Six Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 1, 2004 Ofiarowanie Jezusa w œwi¹tyni Œwiêto przypadaj¹ce 2 lutego, tzn. w czterdzestym dniu po Bo¿ym Narodzeniu, zmieni³o swoj¹ nazwê: liturgia dawna mówi³a o Oczyszczeniu Najœwiêtszej Maryi Panny, tradycja polska mówi³a o Matce Bo¿ej Gromnicznej, a liturgia odnowiona, zachowuj¹c zasadnicz¹ treœæ dzisiejszego œwiêta, mówi o Ofiarowaniu Pañskim. Œwiêto Ofiarowania Pañskiego by³o znane i uroczyœcie obchodzone w Jerozolimie ju¿ w IV w, a wiêc zaraz po ustaniu przeœladowañ chrzeœcijan. Z Jerozolimy œwiêto Ofiarowania Pañskiego – pod greck¹ nazw¹ „Hypapante” – uroczyste spotkanie z Symeonem i Ann¹ – przyjê³o siê w VI wieku w Konstantynopolu. Zmiana nazwy: „Hypapante” – Uroczyste Spotkanie – na Oczyszczenie Najœwiêtszej Maryi Panny nada³a œwiêtu charakter maryjny, podczas gdy pierwotnie by³o ono œwiêtem Pañskim. Dlatego nowy kalendarz liturgiczny, obowi¹zuj¹cy od 1969 r., przywróci³ temu œwiêtu dawny jego charakter, nazywaj¹c je œwiêtem Ofiarowania Pañskiego. W scenie ofiarowania Jezusa w œwi¹tyni œw. £ukasz podkreœla mesjañskie przeznaczenie Jezusa. Maryja i Józef tym gestem sk³adaj¹ przyrzeczenie wiernego pos³uszeñstwa woli 2 lutego bêdzie odprawiona Msza œw. w jêzyku polskim o godz. 7:00 wieczorem w koœciele. Podczas Mszy œwiêtej odbêdzie siê poœwiêcenie œwiec. Klub Dobrego Pasterza przy parafii œw. Do tañca przygrywaæ bedzie zespó³ “KLEKS”. Boga, odrzucaj¹c jak¹kolwiek formê uprzywilejowania. Ich wspólne przyjœcie do œwi¹tyni w Jerozolimie nabiera szczególnej wymowy – oznacza wolê poœwiêcenia siê Bogu w miejscu Jego obecnoœci. Józef i Maryja spotykaj¹ w œwi¹tyni Symeona – „cz³owieka sprawiedliwego i pobo¿nego, wyczekuj¹cego pociechy Izraela” (£k 2,25). Symeon, wzór cz³owieka, który otwiera siê na dzia³anie Boga, „za natchnieniem Ducha” (por. Lk 2, 27), przychodzi do œwi¹tyni, gdzie spotyka Józefa i Maryje. Dziêki temu doœwiadczeniu Józef i Maryja rozumiej¹ jaœniej donios³oœæ swojego gestu ofiarowania: w œwi¹tyni jerozolimskiej ofiaruj¹ Tego, Który bêd¹c chwa³¹ swego ludu, jest równie¿ zbawieniem ca³ej ludzkoœci.
