Aims and topics
The Speleological School – an international meeting established few years after discovery of
the Niedźwiedzia (Bear) Cave in Kletno has been traditional talking stop for karst and cave
scientists. A 30 year long history and 24 editions of the Speleological School are inextricably
linked with the name of its founder and scientific director - Professor Marian Pulina. The 25th
Speleological School is dedicated to Professor Marian Pulina and Professor Teresa
Wiszniowska (the paleozologist from University of Wrocław) both our late and much
lamented mentors and friends.
From the beginning, the School was international and multidisciplinary. It brought together
classical karst and cave studies and exploration of glacier caves. Professor Marian Pulina
was co-founder of the Commission on Glacier Caves and Cryokarst in Polar and High
Mountain Regions of the UIS and an active member of the Karst Commission of the IGU.
The 25th Speleological School will be both a joint meeting of UIS and IGU Commissions and
also the 8th Symposium GLACKIPR.
25th Speleological School will offer both - thematic sessions and field trips concerned with the
following topics:
• the relationships between glacial and karst systems;
• glacier caves and karst in recently glaciated areas;
• drainage systems in glaciers and karst - analogies and differences;
• cryokarst – definitions, analogies and relatinships with carbonate karst;
• chemical denudation rates in glacier covered and ice-free karst basins;
• evolution of karst under glaciations, with special reference to continental glaciations and
permafrost;
• hydrothermal activity and its influence on karst evolution in glaciated areas;
• cave sediments, fossil cave fauna and human traces in caves as records of environmental
changes in the past, with special reference to the Pleistocene glaciations;
• karst hydrology, geology, geomorphology, speleoclimatology, biospeleology;
• cave archaeology.
The organizers will publish a conference Proceedings. Selected papers will be published in
our journal "Kras i speleologia" at the end of 2007. More details and a call for papers will be
sent to registered participants.
