called the children of God.

RESPONDING TO THE CALL
Do we truly know the voice of Christ? Do
we truly respond to the voice of our shepherd
with our own distinctive voice? How often we
attempt to imitate those around us, appropriating the response of another member of the
flock to Christ. Perhaps we need to balance
the image of being sheep of one flock with the
image from the second reading, which tells us that we are all
children of God. What child has precisely the same interaction
with parents as his or her siblings? Instead, they frequently do
and say things to distinguish themselves in the eyes of their
parents.
Whether we use the image of children or of sheep to understand our relationship with Christ, we believe that we are all
known and called by name. With this great gift comes a responsibility: to respond to the call with our own distinctive
voice, to take time to discern exactly what our call is, to determine precisely what the will of the Father is for each of us.

YOUNG MARRIED COUPLES PROGRAM
This Sunday, Apr. 29th we will begin an innovative program
for young married couples in the school cafeteria after the
11:00am Mass. Dr. Christopher Klofft, Professor of Theology
at Assumption College will be the speaker for the first session.
Dr. Klofft will address various issues facing couples today,
followed by a question and answer period.
A lunch (free of charge) will be served at 12:00pm. Babysitting services will be available for couples with young children.
BEATIFICATION MIRACLE SPEAKER
On Monday, April 30th, Sr. Marie Simon-Pierre Normand
will visit our parish and be the featured speaker in our Basilica
at 10:00am for Grades 4-8 plus guests and interested parties.
Sister Marie was instantly healed from Parkinson’s disease
through the assistance of Pope John Paul II—the miracle leading to his beatification one year ago.

MAY DEVOTIONS
In the tradition of the Church the month of May is dedicated
to Our Blessed Mother. The devotional piety of the people for
centuries surrounded this month with a variety of prayer services and decorational traditions. The most common prayer is
the Litany of Loreto which people sing in the churches, chapels
and even to Statues and Icons on the byways. Fresh flowers of
May were used to decorate any image of the Blessed Mother.
St. Joseph Basilica will return to the old tradition of having
May Devotions in English or Polish on Mon. thru Fri. at
7:00pm, on Sun. after 11:00am Mass and on Sat. after the
4:00pm Mass.
All children of St. Joseph School and their parents are invited
to attend the May Devotions each day. Children who participate, will receive a different image of a Great Saint on each day
and will have the entire collection for daily attendance during
the month of May. Gifts will be distributed to students who
make an exemplary effort to attend each day.
Crowning of the Statue of the Blessed Mother. This
year’s crowning will take place on Monday, May 7 at 7:00pm.
The most important role in this devotional ceremony is that of
the First Holy Communion Class. We kindly ask that they
come in their official attire to honor the Blessed Mother and to
dedicate their life to her motherly care. We request that all the
altar servers, parish organizations, parish ministries and parishioners take part in this liturgical celebration. All participants
should gather in the school parking lot to process to the church.
FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION of the Blessed Sacrament
will take place after the 7:00am Mass on May 4th and continue
throughout the day concluding at 3:00pm with the Chaplet to
the Divine Mercy followed by benediction. Adorers are asked
to attend at their scheduled time. A Mass will also be celebrated at 7:00pm in the Polish language.
Please note: All members and parishioners are cordially invited to join us at the 7:00am Mass which is designated for either the living or deceased member of the Sacred Heart Society.
FIRST EUCHARIST CELEBRATION
Next Sunday, May 6 we will celebrate the First Holy Communion at the 12:15pm liturgy for second graders of St. Joseph
School and Religious Education Class. We invite parents,
grandparents, godparents and friends to join us for this unique
day in the life of these children. We kindly ask that parents
make this day very special and dignified to foster positive
memories for their child and above all we ask the parish community to pray for them that they will consider participation in
the Eucharist and Holy Communion for the highlight of their
life.
PARTNERS IN CHARITY
As of April 24, 2012, your gifts and pledges have totaled
$18,341. Another $6,659 is needed to reach our goal of
$25,000. Pledge envelopes are available in the church pews.

OUTDOOR UPGRADE OF BASILICA
FOR 125th JUBILEE CELEBRATION
This past week we began the outside work at the entrance to
the Basilica. The stairs from the Maynard Street side were removed and new stairs will be installed which will be smaller in
size and properly balance the side entrance to the Basilica. The
gravel was removed and layers of sand will be placed in preparation for the laying of the stones. The damaged bricks of the
Basilica which were covered by the old steps will be replaced
and granite slabs will be placed on the steps with proper facing.
At the same time we will make a narrow pathway toward the
statue of Blessed John Paul II. If we have sufficient funds we
will finish the wall and stairs in front of the Basilica.
CONGRATULATIONS!
We are proud to announce that Jake Daly of our St. Joseph
Boy Scout Troop #173 is our newest member of the exclusive
Eagle Scout Court of Honor. Jake is the son of John and Carol
Daly of Douglas, MA. Only about 4% of Boy Scouts attain this
rank. A senior at Douglas High School, Jake will continue his
studies at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. We ask for
God’s blessings for Jake in all his future endeavors.
SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION- reminds
parishioners and friends to register new students or re-register,
if they are currently enrolled, as soon as possible. This is an
exciting year for St. Joseph School with a renewed interest in
education and formation of character that we provide for children. Parishioners have first priority for available seats.
GRANDPARENT AND SPECIAL PERSON DAY
On Thursday, May 3rd all grandparents, and other significant
individuals who play an important role in the life of a given
child, will be hosted by St. Joseph School. The day will begin
with a 9:00am Liturgical Celebration in the Basilica followed
by a tour of the school and lunch in the cafeteria. The children
are always proud to open their hearts and extend their hospitality to show appreciation and gratitude to those who help in their
education.

NCEA CONVENTION
Fourteen faculty members and administrators from St. Joseph
School were among the 10,000 attendees at the 2012 National
Catholic Educational Association (NCSEA) Convention in Boston on April 11 & 12. This year’s convention featured more
than 400 workshops in areas relevant to Catholic education
including curriculum workshops, common core standards, technology-based learning, character education and faith-based
teaching. The Professional Development program provided an
exceptional opportunity for teachers to learn best practices in
education from well-know national educators, experts and keynote speakers.
ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN’S CLUB– Executive
Board meeting on Tues., May 1 at 7:00pm in the conference
room.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS –next meeting will be held on
Wed., May 2 at 7:00pm in the conference room.
CATHOLIC YOUTH GROUP
Camping with the Youth Group-All youths in grades 6-12
are invited to go tent camping on Sat., May5th from 11:00am to
Sun., May 6th until 2:00pm at Sutton Falls in Sutton, MA. This
facility offers kayaking, rowboats, canoes, swimming, basketball court, firepit, hiking trails, etc. Cost is $30 per youth and
that includes food. Some parent volunteers (you go free) will
be needed to help chaperone the group. Contact Mrs. Valcour
if you are interested or if you have any questions.
OFFICE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Catechists are needed for Fall: Are you willing? Will you
answer the call? We NEED YOU. If you are interested, please
call the Religious Education Office and leave your name and
phone number. Please consider this special work of our
Church. Training will be provided.
Please pray-for our 20 young people who are preparing to
make their First Holy Communion on May 6 that their hearts
are ready to receive Jesus.
First Eucharist Class Retreat - and 2nd Confession on
Wed., May 2 @ 2:30pm in the school.
Religious Education Registration for Fall Classes - Beginning next week we are accepting registration for our Fall
classes. This includes new First Graders starting Public School
in the Fall, new parishioners and SJS 8th grade students who
will be attending public high school. Registration forms will be
in the back of the Church at this time with all information on
the form. Please return promptly and call the Religious Education Office with any questions. Current Religious Ed Students
may re-register during our class times.

"Popatrzcie, jaką miłością obdarzył nas Ojciec: zostaliśmy nazwani dziećmi Bożymi." (1J 3,1)
Jesteśmy wdzięczni Bogu za to, że staliśmy
się Jego dziećmi, że On, jako Dobry Pasterz,
znając nas i kochając, zgromadził nas w swojej
owczarni. Każda Eucharystia, sprawowana
wspólnie z innymi, nam o tym przypomina.
Jednocześnie, jako owczarnia Chrystusa, chcemy dzielić ze swym Pasterzem Jego troski.
Między innymi tę, aby też inne owce przyprowadzić do
owczarni. Dlatego nie zamykajmy się w poczuciu zadowolenia,
ale bądźmy gotowi, aby Dobry Pasterz – poprzez naszą miłość,
wrażliwość i ofiarność – szukał i odnalazł tych, którzy zaginęli.
ADORACJA PIERWSZOPIĄTKOWA
Na Pierwszopiątkową Adorację Najświętszego Sakramentu
zapraszamy 4 maja po Mszy o godz. 7:00 i potrwa do 15:00, i
zostanie zakończona wspólną koronka do Miłosierdzia Bożego.
Wszystkie grupy parafialne proszone są o uczestnictwo w adoracji według ustalonego harmonogramu. Tradycyjnie Msza w
języku polskim będzie odprawiona o godz. 19:00. Pól godziny
przed Mszą możliwość spowiedzi.
SPOTKANIE MŁODYCH MAŁŻEŃSTW
Dziś po Mszy o godz. 11:00 rozpoczynamy cykl comiesięcznych spotkań dla młodych małżeństw, poświęconych zagadnieniom związanym z życiem rodzinnym i małżeńskim. Spotkanie
odbędzie się w szkolnej kafeterii. W programie spotkania przewidziany jest wykład dra Christofer'a Klofft'a, wykładowcy z
Assumption College. Dla uczestników spotkania będzie zorganizowany poczęstunek a dla dzieci w czasie spotkania przewidziano opiekę oraz gry i zabawy.
PIERWSZA KOMUNIA ŚWIĘTA
Uroczysta Eucharystia odprawiana z okazji przyjęcia przez
dzieci z naszej parafii Pierwszej Komunii Świętej zostanie odprawiona w najbliższa niedzielę, 6 maja o godz. 12:15. Zapraszamy wszystkich rodziców, chrzestnych, krewnych przyjaciół
i parafian do przyłączenia się do tej wyjątkowej celebracji.
Wesprzyjmy nasza modlitwą i radością dzieci, które przyjmą po
raz pierwszy Jezusa w Najświętszym Sakramencie. Sprawmy,
by był to dla nich wyjątkowy i niezapomniany dzień.
Druga kolekta dzisiejszej niedzieli jest przeznaczona na wszystkie niezłożone dotychczas koperty.
Za tydzień druga kolekta będzie przeznaczona na pokrycie kosztów utrzymania i energii.

KORONACJA MARYI
W tym roku to uroczystą Koronację Maryi będziemy świętowali w poniedziałek 7 maja o godz. 19:00. Do udziału we
wspólnej modlitwie zapraszamy wszystkie Grupy i Organizacje
Parafialne, a szczególnie dzieci, które w przeddzień przyjmą po
raz pierwszy Komunię Św. Wszyscy uczestnicy zbierają się na
parkingu przed szkołą.
ŚWIADEK CUDU
W poniedziałek 30 kwietnia będziemy gościli w naszej parafii
siostrę Marie Simon-Pierre Norman. Siostra, za przyczyną bł.
Jana Pawła II, została uzdrowiona z choroby Parkinsona. Spotkanie siostry z uczniami naszej szkoły oraz wszystkimi zainteresowanymi, którzy znajda czas by przybyć, odbędzie się w
kościele o godz. 10:00.
ZAPISY DO SZKOŁY
Choć do rozpoczęcia roku szkolnego pozostało jeszcze sporo
czasu, to już dziś pomyśleć o zapisaniu dziecka na kolejny rok
edukacji. W naszej szkole, choć notujemy duży wzrost zainteresowania, są jeszcze dostępne miejsca. Przypominamy, że
pierwszeństwo zapisu do naszej szkoły zarezerwowane jest dla
naszych parafian. Zapraszamy!!!
RELIGIA
Rekolekcje dla dzieci pierwszokomunijnych rozpoczynają
się w środę 2 maja o godz. 14:30. Spowiedź dla dzieci i
rodziców o godz. 18:00.
Zapisy na religię w przyszłym roku rozpoczynają się w
przyszłym tygodniu. Odpowiednie formularze będą dostępne
przy wejściach do kościoła
KONTYNUACJA PRAC JUBILEUSZOWYCH
W ubiegłym tygodniu zostały wznowione prace przy wejściu
do kościoła. Stare schody zostały zdemontowane, a na ich
miejsce powstaną nowe, które będą bardziej korespondowały z
całością budynku. Nowe schody będą strukturą i formą
przypominały te, które zostały odnowione w ubiegłym roku.
W zależności od dostępności środków, w planach jest również
dalsza przebudowa schodów przed głównym wejściem, a także
budowa ścieżki do pomnika papieża.

NABOŻEŃSTWO MAJOWE
Maj jest w Kościele miesiącem szczególnie poświęconym czci Matki Bożej. Słynne „majówki” - nabożeństwa, odprawiane wieczorami w kościołach, przy grotach, kapliczkach i przydrożnych figurach, na stałe wpisały się w krajobraz Polski. Jego centralną
częścią jest Litania Loretańska.
Początków tego nabożeństwa należy szukać w pieśniach sławiących Maryję Pannę znanych na Wschodzie już w V w. Na Zachodzie poświęcenie majowego miesiąca Matce Bożej pojawiło się dopiero na przełomie XIII i XIV w., dzięki hiszpańskiemu królowi
Alfonsowi X. Zachęcał on by wieczorami gromadzić się na wspólnej modlitwie przed figurami Bożej Rodzicielki.
Nabożeństwo majowe bardzo szybko stało się popularne w całej chrześcijańskiej Europie. W XVI w. upowszechnieniu nabożeństwa sprzyjał wynalazek druku. Po raz pierwszy maj został nazwany miesiącem Maryi w wydanej w 1549 r. w Niemczech książeczce „Maj duchowy”, która była odpowiedzią na Reformację.
W wielu żywotach świętych oraz kronikach zakonnych można wyczytać o majowym kulcie Maryi Panny. Dobrym przykładem
jest św. Filip Nereusz, który gromadził dzieci przy figurze Matki Bożej, zachęcał do modlitwy i do składania u jej stóp kwiatów.
Podobne zwyczaje opisują XVII wieczne kroniki włoskich dominikanów.
Inicjatorem nabożeństw majowych był żyjący na przełomie XVII i XVIII wieku w Neapolu jezuita o. Ansolani. Organizował on
w kaplicy królewskiej specjalne koncerty pieśni maryjnych, które kończył uroczystym błogosławieństwem Najświętszym Sakramentem. Wielkim propagatorem tej formy czci Matki Bożej był równieżmjezuita, o. Muzzarelli, który w 1787 r. wydał specjalną
broszurkę, którą rozesłał do wszystkich włoskich biskupów. Po mimo kasaty jezuitów przez Klemensa XIV, o. Mazurelli wprowadził nabożeństwo majowe w kościele Al Gesu w Rzymie. Rozpowszechnił je również w Paryżu, towarzysząc papieżowi Piusowi VII
podczas koronacji Napoleona Bonaparte. To właśnie Pius VII obdarzył nabożeństwo majowe pierwszymi odpustami. W 1859 r. kolejny następca św. Piotra – Pius IX, zatwierdził obowiązującą do naszych czasów formę nabożeństwa, składającego się z Litanii
Loretańskiej, nauki kapłana oraz uroczystego błogosławieństwa Najświętszym Sakramentem.
W Polsce pierwsze odnotowane nabożeństwa majowe zostały wprowadzone w 1838 r. przez jezuitów w Tarnopolu. W połowie
XIX w. „majówki” odprawiane już były w wielu miastach, m.in. w Warszawie w kościele Św. Krzyża, w Krakowie, Płocku, Toruniu, Nowym Sączu Lwowie i Włocławku.
Litania Loretańska, która jest główną częścią nabożeństw majowych, powstała prawdopodobnie już w XII w. we Francji. Zebrane
wezwania sławiące Maryję Pannę zatwierdził 11 czerwca 1587 r. papież Sykstus V. Swoją nazwę zawdzięcza włoskiej miejscowości
Loretto, gdzie była niezwykle popularna. Ponieważ często modlący się dodawali do niej własne wezwania, w 1631 r. Święta Kongregacja Obrzędów zakazała dokonywania w tekście samowolnych zmian. Nowe wezwania posiadały aprobatę Kościoła i wynikały
z rozwoju Mariologii. W Polsce jest o jedno wezwanie więcej. W okresie międzywojennym, po zatwierdzeniu przez Stolicę Apostolską uroczystości Najświętszej Maryi Panny Królowej Polski, za zgodą papieża Piusa XI, do Litanii dołączono wezwanie
„Królowo Polski”.
Wszystkich parafian zapraszamy do włączenia się w tę wielowiekową tradycję oddawania czci Bogu za przyczyną Najświętszej
Maryi Panny. W naszej parafii Nabożeństwa będą odprawiane codziennie o godz. 19:00 za wyjątkiem niedziel (Nabożeństwo po
Mszy o godz. 11:00) oraz sobót (Nabożeństwo po Mszy o godz. 16:00). Do wspólnej modlitwy zachęcamy szczególnie dzieci, które
jak wiemy z historycznych opisów, zawsze miały uprzywilejowane miejsce podczas nabożeństw maryjnych. Każde dziecko, które
będzie uczestniczyło w Nabożeństwie Majowym otrzyma obrazek, który będzie można wkleić do specjalnej książeczki. Najgorliwiej
uczęszczającym dzieciom, na zakończenie miesiąca, zostaną rozdane upominki.
