THE LIGHT OF FAITH
The first reading today is charged with the
glory of the Lord. Everyone who can come
to the holy city does come - whole caravans
of people of all ages on foot and on dromedaries and camels.
This description if an irresistible light - filled city prepares
us for the story of the magi. They are guided by their own
lights - their study of astronomy and astrology - and by the
light of a peculiar star. Their study tells them that an unusual
event in the heavens is a sign of an extraordinary birth on earth.
They mean to find out about this, and they set out with gifts
worthy of a king. They are welcomed into an insignificant
house in Bethlehem, offer gifts befitting a king and receive the
gift of faith.
Paul reinforces the great gift of faith available to the Gentiles,
whom the magi represent. What they have seen has changed
them, just as it changed Paul and all who heeded his proclamation. Like the magi and like Paul, we are invited to receive this
life that is filled with the light of faith.
The second collection this week is designated
for Diocesan Obligations.
Next weekend’s second collection will be
for Higher Energy and Fuel costs.
THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
This Sunday, January 5th, we celebrate the solemnity of the
Epiphany. We once again recall the Three Wise Men who received a series of mysterious signs and began their journey to
find the new born Messiah of the World. It is a clear indication
that it is ultimately God who leads the Wise Men on their journey and it is God who reveals the child to them and again it is
God who reveals the mystery of Christ to all nations.
On Christmas Day many people participated in the Eucharist
which is a sign of a contemporary, universal search for God in
the person of Jesus Christ. Christ is the center of Christmas and
the meaning of Christmas and we find him through acts of charity, kindness and love. “God is love and he who abides in love
abides in God and God abides in him”.
For your information - Blessed chalk and incense is located
near the crèche to allow you to follow the tradition of writing
over the doorway of your home the following 20+C+M+B+14.
This inscription is a sign of the resilience of our tradition and
the fulfillment of the magi’s quest for meaning and peace.

We are truly blessed with an outstanding group of individuals
who answered our call to assist in decorating our Basilica for
the Christmas Season.

the enhancement of the church under the direction of Fred and

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
This Sunday, Jan. 5th we will pray the chaplet to the Divine
Mercy at 3:00pm. Jesus said to Sister Faustina, “Through the
Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for will be
compatible with my will”. We encourage parishioners to bring
their family and friends to spend an hour with Jesus.
CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA
The Catholic University of America founded in 1887, is the
national university of The Catholic Church in the United States.
Located in Washington, D.C., it provides an academically rigorous education guided by Catholic intellectual tradition to
nearly 7,000 students every year. More than 4,000 students
directly receive scholarship aid from this collection, including
many from our diocese.
It has a special responsibility to educate future leaders for our
Church and our nations. For example, all five cardinals and
ninety-five bishops are among its alumni.
This collection will be taken at St. Joseph Basilica on the
weekend of January 18 & 19th. You may use the envelope in
your January packet to assist students across our country.
NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH
Across the Catholic world devotion to Saint Joseph is very
popular in churches, convents, monasteries as well as in private
practice of the faithful. Since our Basilica and school are dedicated to him, this is an opportunity to seek his assistance in our
pastoral ministries.
On Wednesday, January 8th at 7:00pm we ask you to join us
for our weekly Novena and Devotion to St. Joseph. Members
of our Holy Rosary Sodality will carry St. Joseph’s statue from
Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel to the sanctuary. Whenever
a given organization is assigned we expect that all members
will attend the Novena devotion and select among them four
persons to carry the statue.
We are grateful for the graces requested and offerings you
submit in the petition box.
NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK
The Catholic Church across this country will observe National Migration Week in the month of January. St. Joseph
Basilica will celebrate this event on Sunday, January 12th, at
the 9:30am Family Mass. This year’s theme is: ”Out of Darkness.”
We invite our students and also parishioners to join us at the
entrance of the church to process in their native costumes, carrying flags from their respective countries to gather around the
Eucharistic table—a symbol of solidarity and communion. If
you would like to participate wearing a costume depicting your
cultural heritage, please call the rectory
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
We will celebrate Catholic Schools Week from January 26th
through February 1st at St. Joseph School. The theme this year
is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and
Service”.
Bishop McManus will celebrate Mass on Sunday, January
26th at 9:30am. The Home School Association in conjunction
with the school staff are planning for special events to take
place during the week.
HOLY ROSARY SODALITY
Members of the Holy Rosary Sodality will be selling tickets
after all masses for the Annual Oplatek Dinner to be held on
January 12th at 12:30PM at Point Breeze Restaurant. Tickets
are $12.50 pp for a buffet of fish, ham, French meat pie with
vegetables and potato.
IN MEMORIUM
On November 28th a Mass of Resurrection was celebrated for
the repose of the soul of Sister Adelia Markiewicz. Sister Adelia, one of twelve children, was a native of Webster, educated at
St. Joseph School and graduated from Bartlett High School.
After graduation she spent two years of vocational discernment
and in 1940 she entered the Order of the Felician Sisters in Our
Lady of the Angels Convent in Enfield, CT.
She served many assignments in the Provence and at the Sister Generalate in Rome. She was a Eucharistic Minister and
was dedicated to the works of mercy ministering to the sick and
aging with humility and humor. She is survived by two brothers, Frank and Joseph, a sister, Theresa and sisters-in-law
Gladys, Olga and Alice. Msgr. Czarnecki attended the Mass
with her family members. Please remember Sister Adelia in
your prayers.

St. Joseph Basilica - We are most grateful for a very
generous donation received from Dr. John Kalinowski: $5,000
to St. Joseph Parish, $3,000 for Diocesan Obligations and
$2,500 to defray the energy and fuel costs. Dr. Kalinowski’s
thoughtfulness is a great financial help in our operational
budget. May the goodness of his heart be rewarded by many
blessings in the New Year.
St. Joseph School -- We are grateful for the following

"I otworzywszy swe skarby, ofiarowali Mu dary: złoto, kadzidło i
mirrę." (Mt 2, 11b)
Mędrcy udali się do Betlejem, by spotkać
Zapowiedzianego i Obiecanego i przekonać
się, kogo wskazała im Gwiazda Betlejemska,
poznać prawdę, złożyć hołd nieznanemu
Dziecięciu – Królowi. Adoracja zakłada
uznanie kogoś za osobę godniejszą od siebie, za kogoś
niezwykłego. Dla Magów Jezus był właśnie taką Osobą, skoro
wyczytali w księgach zapowiedź pojawienia się Jego na ziemi,
na długo zanim się narodził, a na dodatek, Jego narodzenie
zwiastowało pojawienie się niezwykłego obiektu na
niebie. Mieli zatem serca i umysły otwarte na poszukiwanie
prawdy, na weryfikację tego, co ujrzeli z tym, co wyczytali w
księgach. Dociekliwość rzeczywiście doprowadziła ich do
Prawdy, do Boga, więc złożyli Mu pokłon, dostrzegli wielkość
w tym, co dla oczu było małe i pogardzone. Szukali zatem nie
tylko umysłem, ale i sercem. Jak Ty szukasz Prawdy? Czy
pragniesz ją poznać? Czy polegasz tylko na wzroku, na swych
zmysłach, czy dopuszczasz do głosu serce? Czy potrafisz
ukorzyć się i uklęknąć przed Bogiem, uznając swą nicość, jak
to uczynili Trzej Królowie? Czy stać Cię zatem na pokorę?
Kogo adorujesz?
Druga kolekta dzisiejszej niedzieli jest przeznaczona na
Zobowiązania Diecezjalne.
Druga kolekta w następną niedzielę będzie przeznaczona na
pokrycie kosztów utrzymania i energii.
OBJAWIENIE PAŃSKIE
Obchodzimy dziś Uroczystość Objawienia Pańskiego. Po raz
kolejny przypominamy trzech Mędrców, którzy otrzymali wiele
tajemniczych znaków i rozpoczęli swoją podróż, aby odnaleźć
nowonarodzonego Mesjasza. Jest to wyraźny sygnał, że jest
Bóg, który prowadzi Mędrców do celu ich podróży, Bóg który
objawia tajemnicę Chrystusa wszystkim narodom.
W dzień Bożego Narodzenia wielu ludzi uczestniczyło w
Eucharystii, która jest znakiem współczesnego i powszechnego
poszukiwania Boga w osobie Jezusa Chrystusa, który jest w
centrum Bożego Narodzenia i stanowi sens świętowania
Bożego Narodzenia, a my chcemy go znaleźć poprzez akty
miłosierdzia, dobroci i miłości. " Bóg jest miłością, a kto trwa
w miłości, trwa w Bogu, a Bóg trwa w nim ".

przy żłóbku. Zachęcamy do tradycyjnego oznaczenia drzwi

KORONKA DO MIŁOSIERDZIA BOŻEGO
Dzisiejsza niedziela jest pierwszą niedzielą miesiąca. O godz.
15:00 będziemy wspólnie odmawiać Koronkę do Miłosierdzia
Bożego. Jezus powiedział do Siostry Faustyny: "Poprzez
odmawianie Koronki uprosisz wszystko, jeżeli to, co prosisz
będzie zgodne z moją wolą". Zachęcamy wiernych, aby
dołączyli do wspólnej modlitwy i zaprosili do niej członków
swoich rodziny i przyjaciół, aby spędzić ten czas razem z
Jezusem.
W DUCHU WDZIĘCZNOŚCI
Chcielibyśmy bardzo serdecznie podziękować wszystkim
parafianom za ich świąteczną pamięć w modlitwie, szczere
życzenia i hojne dary. Jest to dla nas wyraźny sygnał

NOWENNA DO ŚW. JÓZEFA
W całym katolickim świecie nabożeństwo do świętego Józefa
jest bardzo popularne w kościołach, klasztorach, oraz w
prywatnej praktyce wiernych. Ponieważ nasza szkoła i bazylika
są Jemu dedykowany, to jest to dla nas wspaniała okazja, aby
wypraszać Jego wsparcia w naszych duszpasterskich
potrzebach.
W środę 8 stycznia o godz. 19:00 zapraszamy na naszą
cotygodniową Nowennę i nabożeństwo do św. Józefa. W tym
tygodniu figurę św. Józefa w uroczystej procesji będą nieśli
członkowie Holy Rosary Sodality.
NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK
W całych Stanach Zjednoczonych, w styczniu Kościół
Katolicki obchodzi Narodowy Tydzień Migracji. W naszej
parafii obchody rozpoczynamy w niedzielę, 12 stycznia, na
Mszy św. Rodzinnej o godz. 09:30. Zachęcamy naszych
uczniów i parafian aby dołączyli do nas przy wejściu do
kościoła, aby niosąc flagi z różnych krajów zgromadzić się
wokół eucharystycznego stołu - symbolu naszej jedności. Tych,
którzy w chcą w tym dniu wystąpić w strojach narodowych
prosimy o kontakt z biurem parafialnym.
TYDZIEŃ SZKÓŁ KATOLICKICH
Tydzień Szkół Katolickich w Szkole św. Józefa będziemy
obchodzić w dniach od 26 stycznia do 1 lutego. Tegoroczny
temat tego tygodnia to: "Szkoły Katolickie : wspólnoty wiary,
wiedzy i służby".
Biskup McManus rozpocznie tegoroczne obchody Tygodnia
Szkół Katolickich uroczystą Mszą św. w niedzielę, 26 stycznia.

każdej parafii. Pośród nich znajduje się wiele osób z naszej
diecezji. Zbiórka ta, w naszej parafii odbędzie się w weekend
18 i 19 stycznia.
UŚWIĘTO TRZECH KRÓLI
Obchodzona 6 stycznia Uroczystość Objawienia Pańskiego,
zwana też Świętem Trzech Króli lub Szczodrym Wieczorem (z
uwagi na dawną tradycję obdarowywania tego dnia dzieci
prezentami). To jedno z najstarszych świąt w Kościele. Jako
osobna uroczystość funkcjonuje od końca IV w.
Święto nawiązuje do opisywanych w Ewangelii wg. św.
Mateusza (Mt 2, 1-12) Mędrców ze Wschodu, którzy
prowadzeni przez tajemniczą gwiazdę przybywają, by oddać
pokłon Dzieciątku Jezus i złożyć Mu dary. Trzej Mędrcy
symbolizują całą rodzinę ludzką, w tym również świat
pogański, który oddaje hołd Wcielonemu Bogu. Dla
podkreślenia uniwersalności zbawczej misji Chrystusa tradycja
chrześcijańska od bardzo dawnych czasów wśród jednego
z magów umieszcza człowieka czarnoskórego.
Św. Mateusz pisze o 'magach', nie o 'królach'. Tradycja trzech
króli wiąże się zapewne z proroctwami Starego Testamentu (np.
Psalm 71). Zapewne również w związku ze Starym
Testamentem powstała tradycja zgodnie z którą Magowie
ofiarowali Jezusowi złoto, kadzidło i mirrę.
Od przełomu XV i XVI w na święto Trzech Króli poświęcało
się złoto i kadzidło. Święconym złotem dotykano szyi, by
uchronić ją od choroby. Kadzidłem okadzano domy i obory
z chorymi zwierzętami. Król Jan Kazimierz składał na ołtarzu
jako ofiarę wszystkie monet bite w roku ubiegłym.
Święcenie kredy wprowadzono w XVIII w. Kredą oznacza
się drzwi domów, pisząc na nich litery K+M+B oraz cyfry
bieżącego roku. Litery te odnoszą się do legendarnych imion
królów. Powstały zapewne z pierwszych liter zdania: Christus
Mansionem Benedicat (Niech Chrystus błogosławi ten dom).
W dawnej Polsce w domach na końcu obiadu świątecznego
w Trzech Króli roznoszono ciasto. Kto otrzymał ciasto
z migdałem, był królem migdałowym. Dzieci chodziły po
domach z gwiazdą i śpiewały kolędy, otrzymując od gospodyni
"szczodraki", czyli rogale.
