The Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland and the School of Administration in Bielsko-Biała with the participation of the Jewish Community of Bielsko-Biała invite you to an International Academic Conference The Cultural Heritage of Jews in Contemporary Poland which will take place in Bielsko-Biała, 30.06 – 02.07.2010 The Mikołaj Rej School of Administration in Bielsko-Biała (Poland) in conjunction with the Office of the President of the Republic of Poland are organising the third conference devoted to the topic of multiculturalism, especially in Poland and Europe. The conference will be a part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow. The processes of integration and globalization in Europe generate different opportunities and threats in the cultural sphere. A great opportunity is building awareness of the common European heritage and collective identity of Europeans. At the same time we should cultivate other dimensions of identity and preservation of heritage at different levels of culture. There is increasing importance in not only preserving, but also ensuring the opportunities for development of national, ethnic and regional cultures. In spite of its shared features, European heritage is as diverse as the societies in Europe are. Polish society faces the question of understanding of the national heritage and the significance and place of minorities in Polish collective memory and contemporary culture. This is a question important not only to Poles. The cultural heritage of Jews and its place in the collective memory of Polish society needs profound consideration and discussion. Bearing this in mind, we decided to invite a group of distinguished people and experts dealing with the aforementioned topic. Thematic panels of the conference: 1. The common heritage of a multicultural society. 2. Jewish heritage. Memory, preservation – chances of continuation and development. 3. How can we understand heritage and teach people to respect it? 4. Preserving heritage – does it fulfill expectations? On the next day (2nd July) the participants can go to Krakow by coach, where during the 20th Jewish Culture Festival they will have the opportunity to meet people who deal with remembering the heritage of Polish Jews. Individuals and organizations will present their achievements at special stalls.
