In the first reading, God promises King David that his house and his kingdom will endure forever. It is through Mary’s “Yes - I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.”- that the promise finds fulfillment. SANCTUARY VOTIVE CANDLES For the week of Dec. 18 through Dec. 24,2011 Blessed Mother Altar-Candle-I In memory of Ronald Hanc—given by his mother, Dorothy FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT The child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. —Luke 1:35 THE ETERNAL GOD. King David wished that the ark of God might have a more permanent home. David may have envisioned something like the cedar palace where he resided. God had in mind something more: a throne where David’s descendants would rule for ever, a kingdom where Jews and Gentiles alike would be welcome. Mary’s prayerful nature led to an even more disturbing message. She would conceive and bear a Son though she was not yet married. “How can this come about?” Mary wondered. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” she was told. Mary’s acceptance of this difficult challenge ushered in this, the final age of God’s reign. What was once a secret known only by chosen people like King David and his descendants must now be made clear to all so that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, we can be brought to the “obedience of faith” “according to the command of the eternal God”. CONFESSIONS On Monday, Dec. 19th the traditional Christmas Reconciliation Service will be held at 6:00pm. We encourage every parishioner to take this opportunity to receive the sacrament of God’s forgiveness and mercy. We invite all the youth to take advantage of this sacrament of spiritual healing. Confessions will not be available on Saturday, Dec. 24. If any parishioner would like a priest to come to their home for confessions, please call the rectory this week. CHRISTMAS VIGIL (WIGILIA) Sat., Dec. 24th is the Vigil of Christmas. As the first star appears ushering the birth of our Savior, the Wigilia supper is celebrated in every household with the family gathered at one table. It is a magical evening filled with emotions and meaning. Wigilia Day predicts ones life for the following year. People avoided quarrels, heated discussions and misunderstandings—it is a day of peace, mutual harmony, cooperation and joy which culminates with the evening supper with a well prepared and decorated table. According to tradition, many courses of various food (not less than nine) are served. There are many theories of this tradition, perhaps the most convincing is that this day was a day of fasting and people are famished and the reverence for Christmas dictated an unusual menu obviously without meat. The most important part of the Wigilia supper is the prayer before the meal, reading the Gospel about the Nativity and breaking of the oplatek as a sign of friendship, love, forgiveness and peace. The oplatek was placed on hay on a white cloth in the center of the table symbolizing Jesus’ birth in a stable. In a life filled with tension it would be beneficial to keep this tradition. Please remember that it is inconceivable for a Catholic not to attend Divine Worship on Christmas Day. December 18, 2011 CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE FOR 2011 The Christmas celebration will begin with the vigil mass at 4:00pm on Sat., Dec. 24th. The Adult Choir and children will enhance the vigil liturgy. The bilingual celebration at midnight will begin at 11:30pm with a Christmas concert by the choir, followed by the candlelight procession with the children to the manger, and the blessing of the crèche. During the meditation the children accompanied by musical instruments will share an inspiring Christmas message. The Christmas morning Masses will begin at 8:15am. The family Mass for all parents and children of St. Joseph School as well as the Religious Education students will be celebrated at 9:30am. The children will be asked to re-enact the Gospel, sing in the choir and participate in the offertory procession. The last Mass on Christmas Day is at 11:00am in Polish. SCHOOL NEWS Christmas Pageant-On Sun., Dec. 11th St. Joseph School students opened the Christmas Season with a great musical presentation of “Christmas Around the World” and “Three Wee Kings”. Ninety-nine students took part in this beautiful extravaganza under the direction of Karen Lefebvre, Donna Recko and all the faculty at our school. The first act mesmerized the audience by the presentation of the little ones. The second part depicted the story of the Three Kings in search for the new born Messiah. It was very interesting, original, engaging and flawlessly executed. The children who spent a lot of time after school for rehearsals demonstrated their ability, talent, self discipline, spirit of cooperation and artistic qualities. We are grateful to all parents, teachers, Mrs. Malki of Dudley Tailoring, stagehands and all who extended a helping hand to the success of this traditional Christmas pageant. Personally, I am grateful to the parishioners who took the time in the spirit of support to the children and attended this performance. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL! School Christmas Dinner-On Wed., Dec. 21st our St. Joseph School family—students, faculty, administration and staff will gather together for Christmas dinner. Since this is a Catholic School, which is permeated with a long parish tradition and patrimony of the Felician Sisters, this dinner will be ceremonial and a learning experience for the students. This will be a reenactment of the special dinner that so many families celebrate at the Christmas Vigil which will include special prayers, reading of the Gospel, sharing of the Oplatek, exchanging good wishes among the participants, singing Christmas carols and enjoying mutual company in an atmosphere of joy and peace derived from the birth of Jesus Christ the Savior of the world. This elaborate dinner with a variety of cuisines will emphasize that Christmas is a special and unique time in the life of the Church and our families. This dinner is free of charge. Christmas vacation will begin on Thurs, Dec. 22nd with an early dismissal at 11:00am. Vacation will include Jan. 2ndclasses will resume its activities on Tues., Jan. 3rd. Please attend and cheer our SJS teams onto victory. Good Luck Eagles! CEMETERY I am pleased to report that about 900’ in length and 12’ in width of the roads at the left side toward the back of the cemetery has been repaved. The road was rapidly deteriorating with large holes and was in need of repair. This was indeed a very costly undertaking, but it will be easier for parishioners, who frequently visit that area of the cemetery, to park their cars and also make snowplowing more accessible. There are other sections of the cemetery that need to be addressed, but this work will be done gradually provided that we have the required resources. DEMOLITION In preparation for the building of the Gym/Parish Center the Kozik house built in the 1870’s has been demolished. As we continue with the clearing and excavation, the double lot appears to be spacious enough to accommodate our needs. Needless to say, demolition and excavation is very tedious work involving obtaining various permits and ground work surprises. We anticipated a ledge which would obviously increase the expense and delay the process, fortunately we have not as yet encountered this problem. The ground is workable although we did find several large stones. The trees and bushes along Whitcomb St., will remain until the Spring for environmental protection. Thank God for the mild working days that will allow us to complete this job in about a week under the direction of Norman Rudzinski, Co. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NOTES Parishioners your help is needed! 18:00. Zachęcamy wszystkich do skorzystania z Sakramentu Bożego Miłosierdzia i Przebaczenia. Niedziela 25 grudnia: Pierwsza Msza św. o godz. Naprawiona nawierzchnia pozwoli osobom odwiedzającym łatwiej dotrzeć do grobów swoich bliskich, a w okresie zimowym ułatwi usuwanie śniegu.
