The celebration will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. Again, we wish to encourage all who have been away from the church or the sacraments to take this opportunity to return. All will be asked to acknowledge their sinfulness before God and the gathered community, to seek mercy, and to receive the Church’s absolution. In this way we can enter into Christmas reconciled with God, neighbor and self. Please pray that through this celebration some will be brought home, released from the burden of sin and guilt, and begin healing in Christ. Individual confessions are also heard each Saturday morning from 8:45-9:30, and on December 20th from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Op³atki, the traditional Christmas wafer, is available after Mass from the Ushers. A donation of $1.00 per envelope is requested. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish December 6-7, 2003: Envelopes: $ 8,965.50 Loose Cash: $ 3,236.00 TOTAL DONATIONS: $12,201.50 Amount over/ (under) weekly budget: ($2,798.50) We continue to experience below-budget offertory collections at an alarming rate each week, a situation that has existed throughout the first six months of this fiscal year. We are projecting an approximate 20% deficit in offertory income. As we stated in an October bulletin, it was our previous intention to publish last year’s annual report during November; however, due to the serious financial situation we are currently facing, a special mailing will be sent to all registered parishioners early in the new year once we have the added information of our financial six-month report. The 2004th year of our Lord is quickly approaching and we will certainly receive many blessings, but next year will also challenge us as a parish community to address several serious financial realities. May the Lord Jesus, whom we await this Advent, bless you abundantly for all that you do for His Church. Dan Costigan, Business Manager Page Three As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. Page Four Third Sunday of Advent THIRD SUNDAY OF December 14, 2003 FIRST READING: Zephaniah 3:14–18a RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Isaiah 12:2–3, 4, 5–6 SECOND READING: Philippians 4:4–7 GOSPEL: Luke 3:10–18 Advent Rejoicing in God with Us Traditionally, the Third Sunday of Advent is known as Gaudete (“rejoice”) Sunday. The somber Advent vesture is exchanged for a deep and vibrant rose. This week’s Advent wreath candle is also rose or pink. The readings for this Sunday reflect this bright delight. In fact, the whole rhythm of Advent picks up today. As the more immediate preparations for Christmas begin, the more restrained mood of Advent’s early days is abandoned. The “O Antiphons” are sung and proclaimed beginning this week. You can feel Christmas in the air. This sensation is not just schmaltzy sentimentality. It’s more like a sixth sense we Christians have. And the liturgy is urging us to employ this sense to recognize that Emmanuel, God-with-us, really is with us now. • Comment By this time of year, the airwaves are awash in Christmas carols. Department stores are all geared up for their final holiday sale blitzes. Schedules are crammed with Christmas shopping, pageants, preparations, and the occasional moment or two of panic. Children find it more and more difficult to wait. Something more than carols is in the air, and today’s liturgy more than mirrors this holiday intensity. All three of today’s readings speak to this “holidazzle.” Zephaniah calls for celebration. The Messiah, the “King of Israel, the LORD,” is here among us. He comes to celebrate with us, to dance and sing, to share in our revelry. With the Savior’s presence, we have nothing to fear. Enemies are banished; judgment is lifted. All that is left to us is to rejoice in God’s presence. Paul issues a double call for jubilation and praise. After all, the Lord is near at hand! What is there to be anx- ious about? What is there to fear? The Lord comes to blanket God’s people with peace. In the Gospel, John the Baptizer’s listeners want to know what to do to be ready for the Lord’s coming. John gives them no elaborate agenda. The prophet’s response is simplicity itself: Keep on doing what you’re doing, but do so with great care and a sense of justice. John calls on his listeners who possess more than they need to give to those in greater need. He urges those who must tax not to be taxing, not to overburden, not to defraud. He reminds those who bear arms that they are not to strong-arm, to wield their weapons but sparingly, to forswear falsehoods, and to blunt their blows. • Reflection Today’s readings seem to indicate that our final Advent preparations need not be anything out of the ordinary. Thus, for us, celebration is part of the ordinary. Unbridled joy is the ever-present emo- tion for those who recognize that the Messiah is present. We need not involve ourselves in some highfalutin’ agenda to get ready for Emmanuel. Rather, our Advent task is to tend to what is at hand, to be in charge of our own souls, and also to be responsive to all who are near and dear. And being responsive, by the way, is never something that is done in the abstract or in general. We can be responsive only in the concrete, in particular. Perhaps that’s why the Baptizer in today’s Gospel passage was so particular in his preparation advice. Clearly that’s why we have to be particular in our preparations for the coming of the Lord. We have to be at attention and pay attention to our personal needs, and in so doing, recognize and respond to the very particular and personal needs of others. Nale¿y uczyniæ wszystko, by wieczerza ta mia³a religijny i rodzinny charakter. Zapraszamy w ten wieczór Jezusa do naszych domów. Przygotowania do wieczerzy wigilijnej nale¿y zakoñczyæ wczeœniej, by nie trwa³y do ostatniej chwili. Ojciec rodziny zapala swiecê i mówi: Wszyscy odpowiadaj¹: - Œwiat³o Chrystusa - Bogu niech bêd¹ dziêki Nastêpnie œpiewamy kolêdê: „Wœród nocnej ciszy”, a potem ktoœ z domowiników odczytuje fragment z Ewangeli œw. £ukasza (2, 1-14): „W owym czasie wysz³o rozporz¹dzenie Cezara Augusta, ¿eby przeprowadziæ spis ludnoœci w ca³ym pañstwie. Pierwszy ten spis odby³ siê wówczas, gdy wielkorz¹dc¹ Syrii by³ Kwiryniusz. Wybierali siê wiêc wszyscy, aby siê daæ zapisaæ, ka¿dy do swego miasta. Lecz anio³ rzek³ do nich: Nie bójcie siê! Oto zwiastujê wam radoœæ wielk¹, która bêdzie udzia³em ca³ego narodu: dziœ w mieœcie Dawida narodzi³ siê wam Zbawiciel, którym jest Mesjasz, Pan. A to bêdzie znakiem dla was: Znajdziecie Niemowlê, owiniête w pieluszki i le¿¹ce w ¿³obie. Syn Bo¿y w swojej ogromnej mi³oœci sta³ siê jednym z ludzi, wszed³ do ludzkiej rodziny, aby nas wprowadziæ do Bo¿ej rodziny. Polecamy te¿ Najœwiêtszej Maryi Pannie, Bogarodzicy – nasz¹ rodzinê, naszych przyjació³, s¹siadów, goœci, wszystkich chorych, g³oduj¹cych, sieroty, ludzi samotnych, smutnych i nieszczêsliwych: - Zdrowaœ, Maryjo... Nastêpnie sk³adamy sobie ¿yczenia dziel¹c siê op³atkiem. Ks. Marek Jurzyk December 14, 2003 Third Sunday of Advent Cz³onkowie ¯ywego Ró¿añca wraz z opiekunem ks. December 14, 2003 Third Sunday of Advent WEEK THREE December 14, 2003 LOVE Reading: Luke 3:10-18 “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise” (Lk 3:11). Reflection “It is not enough, for example, to acknowledge and respect every man’s right to the means of subsistence if we do not strive to the best of our ability for a sufficient supply of what is necessary for his sustenance” (John XXIII, Peace on Earth, no. 32). Inspiration—Practicing Love When we generously plant seeds of justice, where will love grow? Nearly a dozen Catholic parishes in western Michigan are participating in JustFaith, an extended justice education program (see www.justfaith.org). Most of these groups enhance their faith formation with hands-on days, such as CCHD’s Journey to Justice process. Journey to Justice is a one- or three-day experience of reflection, discussion, and action on the Church’s teachings on the preferential option for and with the poor and solidarity with the poor. Recently, JustFaith groups in the Dioceses of Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids participated in Journey to Justice days with the Michigan Organizing Project (MOP). Parishioners from Grand Rapids learned about MOP efforts for passage of the Student Adjustment Act. This bipartisan legislation would provide tuition Page Nine relief to immigrant students who have lived much of their lives in this country by allowing these students to attend state colleges at in-state tuition rates. Attaining higher education would enable these young adults to make further contributions to this country. For the JustFaith participants in CCHD’s Journey to Justice program, the time spent with MOP leaders was informative and inspiring. Mary Sue Stegehuis said that her JustFaith study group was impressed with MOP’s knowledge of the issues. She is glad that MOP exists and wants to encourage her parish to become a member. Stegehuis also noted that MOP members show a clear sense of support and respect for one another by working together to ensure that members are heard and by helping one another to develop their leadership gifts. Another JustFaith participant in Journey to Justice, Ken Schoenborn, was also impressed with MOP community leaders. The interactive Journey to Justice session with MOP’s lowincome urban members and the Scripture study and reflection session helped Schoenborn and fellow parishioners visualize social justice actions that could be embraced by members of their affluent, rural parish. Suggested Questions When do human needs seem overwhelming to you? How would you act with, rather than for, poor and low-income persons in your community? What deeper loving actions could you take with others to “share one of your cloaks” with persons who have none and thereby increase peace in your community?
