Marta Rosińska
is a graduate of Łódź University where she specialized in modern British drama. She also
completed Advanced Diploma in Language Teaching Management. Since the graduation, she has
been working for the English Language Centre in Łódź as a teacher, teacher mentor, teacher
trainer and, since 2005, the school’s Director of Studies. Marta loves teaching, inventing new class
activities and preparing ELT materials. She runs workshops across Poland and is a regular
speaker at the international conferences. She is an experienced ESOL examiner of FCE, CAE and
CPE and an exam supervisor.
Marta has co-operated with various publishers but for the last 11 years she has been a dedicated
member of Macmillan Polska team of authors and trainers. She wrote Matura Masters Workbooks,
testsbooks and additional materials for Inspiration. She also co-authored the two best-selling
publications of the Macmillan Repetytorium series: Egzamin gimnazjalny. Repetytorium z testami
and Matura. Repetytorium z testami. Her most recent publication is the new Macmillan Marura
2015. Repetytorium.

Use of English in Action
With a new school year approaching comes yet another set of challenges for us as language teachers. One of these is no doubt
the new written Matura exam, with its new Use of English component. Worryingly, the results of a recent Macmillan mock exam
taken by this year’s third graders across the country show conclusively that it is this very area of language competence that poses
the biggest problems. This calls for yet another shift of our daily teaching priorities, with more classroom time devoted to the
contextualized study and revision of lexical and grammatical items, and for a fresh attitude to Matura practice strategies
throughout the programme.
Hence this session, whose main objective is twofold. Firstly, we will examine the consolidated mock exam results in some detail, to
identify specific sources of difficulty. Secondly, we will look at a number of hands-on activities to help the learners notice
useful language, become more aware of the context in which the language is used and practise it through a variety of
engaging exercises to do with paraphrasing, word building and sentence making.
