WY O L A W ESTI F K I N EWS DZIEN N L A V FESTI MATYLDA/MATHILDE – STUFFED PUPPET THEATRE Amstelveen HOLANDIA/ Amstelveen THE NETHERLANDS POTEMKIN’S FLOWERS POTIOMKINOWSKIE KWIATY Spektakle holenderskiego Stuffed Puppet Theatre często sięgają do poetyki klasycznego teatru lalkowego. Widzi go w podarowanej laleczce, jak i w animującym ją Tranterze. Autor: Szymon Spichalski (AT WoT / TdW) The performances of Stuffed Puppet Theatre (The Netherlands) often reach for the poetics of classic puppet theatre. Neville Tranter sticks to comism and straightforwardness that emphasize the importance of the discussed problem. It was the case of Punch and Judy in Afghanistan, being a tragicomic picture of war. It is also the case of Mathilde, which plot tells life-stories of inhabitants of the Nursing Home. Tranter introduces a few characters and the protagonist of the performance. All of them show different aspects of the process of getting old. It is not incidental that the puppets have the features often found in the characters of fairytales directed to the youngest audience – what is more, the old evidently act like children. Lucie is fascinated by balloons and the dog, her brother Henri asks anybody to open the door in a way a child would ask. The physical disease (Lucie pees in her pants) is accompanied by the reminiscence of the past. Mathilde all the time sees Jean-Michelle - the boy who promised to take her dancing. She sees him in a doll that he once gave her as well as in Tranter – the animator. Meanwhile, the spectators observe cunning Home Managers, who give the patients mobile phones as presents to please the journalist who is writing about the institution. But it occurs that clumsy patients do not know how to use them. However, this beautiful metaphor of temporariness of life has one more dimension – inertia of a puppet can also mean the apathy in old age… Autor: Szymon Spichalski (AT WoT / TdW) FRIDAY 20.06.2014 . 1 STANY SKUPIEN IA/ STATES OF M ATTER – MARIA ŻYNEL & JEGOM Białystok POLSK OŚĆ A/ Białystok Pola nd EKSTATYCZNE GARDEN PARTY EXTATIC GARDEN PARTY „Proszę klaskać, to jest koncert” – pada z ust wykonawczyni. Maria Żynel stosuje mnóstwo podobnych wytrychów, wyzwalających publikę ze zdeterminowanych konwenansem zachowań. Jeżeli zinterpretować tytuł w odniesieniu do fizycznych stanów skupienia materii, to charakter kooperacji Żynel i zespołu Jegomość można określić jako „płynny”. Stany skupienia sytuują się bowiem w punkcie zbiegu koncertu, performansu, spektaklu lalkowego i stand up’u. ‘Please, clap, it is a concert’ – these are performer’s words. Maria Żynel uses many similar methods in order to release the audience from the conventional attitudes that are expected from them in the theatre. If one wants to interpret the title in accordance to the physical states of matter, the character of the cooperation of Maria Żynel and Jegomość band could be described as ‘liquid’. States of Matter combine such forms as concert, installation, puppet play and stand-up. The case of defining the genre of this form brings fierce discussions – but here the dynamics of relations between the performer and the audience is of greater importance. One should not focus on interpretation complexity – the opening monologue devoted to states of matter is only a pretext to set in motion the music machine. States of matter, known from physics lessons, turn to be more an illustration of psychological states, illustrated by new arrangements of Polish songs ( especially from HEY repertoire). Colorful scenography brings quick associations: garden party lit with Chinese lanterns, bedroom of a naughty girl filled with mascots. It is the space of dreams and fantasies, where the bored girl is ready to transform into a cabaret star dressed with a rainbow tutu, giant brocca fly and rabbit ears. Here, Żynel dreams, tempts, but most often plays with spectators by provoking with auto ironical comments: ‘Flying state? Or rather not!’. Sometimes she evokes emotions, when for instance she animates the puppet of a sad hippopotamus while singing the Katasza refrain. One cannot forget, however, that such moments are also taken into quotation marks; the whole project can be characterized by the ironic grimace similar to the one of the Cheshire Cat. Żynel describes her performance as a ‘concert’, but actually there is no clear division into individual songs. It looks more like a poetic slam – improvisation and dynamics of her interactions with the audience constitutes an important part of the project. It happens that the text of one song smoothly turns into another. Eventually, it creates a kind of a montage, taking from cabaret forms. From many traces, the spectator can certainly distill one clear state – emotion. Or happiness? Do you all want to live so unhappily? Those questions asked by the students of the Theatre Academy in Bialystok sound in the heads of the spectators of Back to black project. In the rhythm of Amy Winehouse songs – a rising star from a few years, a talented girl who was destroyed not so much by addictions and emotional problems but rather by show-business. However, the problem of setting into motion the pop culture machine basing on singer’s emotional dramas is not the subject of the performance. Its main subject is the creative work that gives solace and salvation to unhappy people who turn into artists. In a naive way, sometimes poorly, but always sincerely. And as naive as the story of Blake and Amy shown with the use of tiny puppets may seem, it is a real story. Anybody heard something about singer’s death three years ago. Soon after, her death was swallowed by pop culture. Her name was added ’27 club’ next to Hendrix, Morrisson, Cobain and her songs were given unambiguous I nterpretations. Autor: Karolina Rospondek (AT WoT) The performers play with Amy’s public image. They even call her ‘XXI century Werther’ because love is the theme ‘important to all of us’, that is, anybody from the audience. By using such statements they do not defend themselves from the triviality of the theme of unhappy love – even if it is an authentic story. So, can we actually search for universal themes and avoid their triviality at the same time? It is the most important, though unspoken question that they ask when they interrupt their play by turning to the audience or themselves. Such critical form of storytelling demands, however, a sightly different performative form, while the performance leaves the spectators with a kind of dissatisfaction – the actresses use quasipersonal commentary, which is too well learnt. If they improvised, they would share the ‘live’ commentary with the audience and the tag line of the project would be stronger. BACK TO BLACK – TEATR STUDENTÓW/ STUDENT THEATRE Białystok POLSKA/ Białystok POLAND Czy miłość jest tematem? Czy to jest szczęście? Czy wy wszyscy chcecie tak nieszczęśliwie żyć? Te pytania zadawane przez studentki Akademii Teatralnej w Białymstoku pobrzmiewają w głowach widzów spektaklu Back to black. Wkrótce potem jej śmiercią zawładnęła popkultura, wpisując Winehouse do „klubu 27” wraz z Hendrixem, Morrissonem, Cobainem. Autor/Author: Karolina Rospondek (AT WoT) PUPPET - NO - PUPPET ● 7th International Festival of Puppetry Schools Białystok 2014 STANY SKUPIENIA/ STATES OF MATTER – MARIA ŻYNEL & JEGOMOŚĆ Białystok POLSKA/ Białystok Poland STANY ROZBICIA Świat pokazany w Stanach skupienia można porównać do chaosu w głowie nastolatki. Żynel śpiewa m.in. Chińskiego urzędnika państwowego Hey czy Wyjątkowo zimny maj Manaamu. Formuła spektaklu-koncertu idzie dalej, bowiem aktorka zachęca widzów do oklasków i współuczestnictwa. Te animalistyczne odniesienia umieszczają spektakl w stylistyce ,,budy jarmarcznej”. Autor: Szymon Spichalski (AT WoT / TdW) STATES OF BREAKDOWN The world presented in States of Matter can be compared to a chaos in the head of a teenaged girl. There are emu shoes, fashionable black-and-white leggings, lions and dogs mascots. There are colourful stripes and lanterns. But it is the music that presents the essence of the performance, rather than decorations. Żynel presents the audience a girl that can not soothe her ‘state’ of mind – presented songs are supposed to be the verbalization of that breakdown. There is also no specific character. Żynel sings songs from repertoire of such Polish bands as Hey or Manaam. The formula of that performanceconcert goes further as the actress encourages spectators to clap and interact. Her project places itself in the borderline between a happening and installation. Masks and puppets become attributes while telling a story about anonymous teenagers’ fate. Those animalistic references place the performance in the stylistics of ‘a market stall’. Autor/Author: Szymon Spichalski (AT WoT / TdW) LALKA NIE LALKA ● 7 Międzynarodowy Festiwal Szkół Lalkarskich Białystok 2014 BACK TO BLACK – TEATR STUDENTÓW/ STUDENT THEATRE Białystok POLSKA/ Białystok POLAND HAGIOGRAFIA Z TELEWIZORA Acta martyrum czy lekcja biologii? A jakie motywy mogą narosnąć wokół postaci Winehouse? W tle leci autentyczne nagranie Back to Black, w większości odśpiewane przez publikę. Więc czym ostatecznie jest historia artystki? Zmediatyzowaną hagiografią? Nośnym tematem? A może obnażeniem voyeurystycznych inklinacji współczesnego człowieka? Autor: Agata Tomasiewicz (AT WoT/ TdW) TV HAGIOGRAPHY Acta martyrum or the biology lesson? In the centre, there stands a puppet of Amy Winehouse. Just before her death. The actresses present the famous singer’s figure. It turns out that the ‘figure’ is interpreted literally – her body, destroyed by addictions, was given a thorough analysis as it happens during anatomy lessons. The whole performance will be based on turning the metaphor into its literary picture. And it happens, one of the actresses will wind white mice. Blake Fielder-Civil, imagined as plastic ‘Ken’, will be sunk in water tank – eventually he ‘hit the bottom’. The attempt to rescue the beloved from hell of addiction will be shown as the attempt to dive deep in water or to catch him like a fish with a rod. The group turns classical theatre form upside down by continuous break of the narration. The characters comment their own actions and reject the theme of the performance by calling it too trivial. And what kind of motives can rise around Winehouse herself? Firstly, the act of swallowing the individual by the media giant. Automatically, there comes an association with Strzępka’s and Demirski’s performance On being good. But as the duet stressed the exploitation of the man by corporations, here the students play with the image of the star. Finally, the most important question arises – is unhappy love (vide Amy and Blake) a theme for the theatre? Is strong criticism of the media only hypocrisy if culture has been feeding itself with themes of unfulfilled emotions for centuries. Not without a reason, Winehouse is called ‘XXI century Werther’. Through almost all performance the spectators seem to have really good fun while watching the play. The final scene brings, however, a strong change of mood. We see the figure of Amy, green and deadly pale, during the concert in Belgrad – the last in her life. Animated by three actresses, Winehouse staggers, falls down, tries to lift herself up. We hear authentic Back to black recording, sung by the public. So, what is the artist’s story? Is it medialized hagiography? An up-to-date subject? Or perhaps the exposure of voyeuristic inclinations of a contemporary human being? Autor/Author: Agata Tomasiewicz (AT WoT/ TdW) PUPPET - NO - PUPPET ● 7th International Festival of Puppetry Schools Białystok 2014 START WITH MASTERS MATYLDA/MA THILDE – STU FFED PUPPET Amstelveen H THEATRE OLANDIA/ Am stelveen THE NETHERLAND S MISTRZOWIE NA START Otwierający VII Międzynarodowy Festiwal Szkół Lalkarskich pokaz Matyldy autorstwa Neville’a Trantera zdecydowanie podzielił festiwalową publiczność. Zachwyca jednak mistrzowskie opanowanie formy i perfekcyjnie dopasowana do lalek dramaturgia - groteskowość przedstawionych sytuacji podbija silny absurd warstwy narracyjnej. The opening performance of the 7th International Festival of Puppetry Schools – Neville Tranter’s Mathilde- undoubtedly divided the Festival’s audience. Some awarded the performance with a standing ovation, the others were more skeptical. This second ambiguous approach towards the play was probably the effect of seeing the previous performances of the Theatre. Punch and Judy in Afghanistan or Schicklgruber as Adolf Hitler are surely the performances, with which Tranter accustomed the audience to master animation, brilliant, comic dialogues and dramaturgy built on actor-puppeteer relation. In Mathilde - the newest production of Stuffed Puppet Theatre – those relations blur for a few reasons. First of all, the performance consist of loosely combined etudes of unequal intensity. Tranter introduces one more actor on stage, whose task is to illustrate the events of the story. There is, however, no doubt that he does not possess much theatrical experience, especially in the field of puppet animation. What fascinates on the other hand is master self -control and perfect dramaturgy fitted to puppets – the grotesque character of events is emphasized by strong absurdity in narrative layer. But the most important aspect is the presence of the artist-animator on stage. During the whole performance Tranter plays next to his puppets, but does not attract the attention of the audience – except for the moments of interaction with a puppet. He animates them so intensively that spectators seem to forget about his presence on stage. It is a perfect lesson for young adepts of puppetry that they should keep in mind for long.
