Improvisation. When the patient wants to play ‘too much’. (presentation)
Establishing contact with a patient and encouraging him to take the initiative during various
music therapy activities can be difficult. Another kind of challenge can arises when working
with a client who is musically gifted and involved in musical activities. What can we do if our
patient has musical abilities and is unusually active during the sessions? How to help him
achieve his objectives? How to encourage him to walk along the therapeutic path?
Improvisation seems to be the answer. By describing the elements of a music therapy with a
young, autistic woman with unusual musical abilities the role and application of
improvisation will be presented. Extracts of music therapy sessions will be presented along
with comments on the techniques used.

Actor with mental illness in a puppet theater – reflections connected with plays
„Humps” and „Nine Lovers Of Cavalier Dorn”. (paper)
Wrocław, 10-11th April 2014
the 4th International Conference of the Music Therapy Students
The integration theatre, „EUFORION”, has existed since 1995. It has staged 18 premiere
spectacles and several plays in Poland and abroad. The idea of work in this theatre is to
popularize the knowledge about mental disorders and the image of a person who suffers from
schizophrenia or affective psychosis as a person capable to work and create. Spectacles are
often based on literature showing „mad people” who bring positive values into „sane” world.
Often creatures which cannot be seen by normal people live in the ill person’s world.. The
person with active productive symptoms is often lost about what is true and what are
delusions, they create characters that do not exist. Psychiatrists used the term „splitting”
talking about different patient's behaviours depending on the actual phase of their illness.
Therefore, using dolls in this kind of shows is natural. It makes telling the story easier but
technique of working with doll is very hard. Our experience indicates that this is possible but
demands a lot of work.

The Drum Band "Q dobremu" was founded in 2009 on the need for my bachelor-degreedissertation entitled: “Therapeutic effects of group music playing by the mentally ill”. Ever
since the team has regularly been invited to the wide-varied conferences and events in
Wroclaw and Lower Silesia province. Making music in a group and using percussion
instruments allows the participants to develop cognitive functioning, control-ability and
cooperation in the group. It gives the possibility to learn to listen, it improves communication
in the group as well as it affects the well-being and mood of participants in general. Analyzing
the therapeutic aspects of public performances one gets the impression of good results on the
development of social skills of mentally ill, on their cultural interests and advancement in
addition to the positive influences it gives on the confrontation with the public stereotypes
around the mentally ill.

Elements of music therapy in working with children with specific educational needs.

Music as therapy is one of the elements of individual programs targeting children with special
educational needs. This applies both to children with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, dyslexia and giftedness relating to inadequate school achievement. Music as therapy
is used in each of these groups: receptive and active, stimulates the senses, helps in reducing
tension and expressing emotions. The purpose of the application is, therefore, to present
music in educational therapy to children with special educational needs with particular
emphasis on the practical aspect of these activities.

Music as a biological space. (presentation)
Music is an extraordinary phenomenon, which is also an inseparable part of our earthly
existence. It reflects our reality and the reality of people who lived long ago. Why does the
music exist and why is it so precious to us? I am going to search for the answer in the past
when the art of sound hadn't been described by theoreticians and taught in the academic
societies. The past holds the secret of our sensitivity to music – the nature of musical
perception.

Talk to me... by moving. About the relationships in movement. (dance therapy workshop)
Despite incredible technological progress, real communication causes much difficulty
nowadays. In the age of Facebook, we spend less and less time on interaction with people in
the real world. How about recalling how pleasant it is to meet somebody not only virtually
and, what is more, talk to them by means of movement? Everybody interested will be
welcome to join the dance therapy workshop.
