Joseph Peter Kirkiewicz passed away on March 10, 2015 at the
age of 62. He is survived by his mother Helena Kirkiewicz and
his daughters Jessica, Katherine and Hillary, along with his 2
brothers and 2 sisters and their families. Funeral service was held
on March 14 at Kutis Funeral Home in Affton, with internment
at the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery on March 27th.

Dear Parishioners and Friends,
When we come to church for Sunday Mass we are always presented with three
readings from the Holy Bible: the first one is usually taken from the Hebrew
Scriptures (Old Testament), followed by a Responsorial Psalm. Second reading
is typically taken from one of the Epistles of St. Paul, or other New Testament
authors. Finally, a passage from one of the Gospels is proclaimed. This well
established ”order of appearance” is suspended starting with the Easter day all
the way until Pentecost. For these fifty days the first reading is always taken
from the book of the Acts of the Apostles.
Acts is a unique book in the New Testament. The Gospels tell the stories of the
life and ministry of Jesus, and the epistles are letters circulated among the first
communities of believers. But the Acts of the Apostles recounts the stories of
the spread of the Christian faith from Christ’s disciples in Jerusalem, to most of
the ancient world. Not precisely history in the modern sense of the word, Acts
was written by the evangelist Luke. He was able to tell a good story which
brings to life individuals and events, but his knowledge was limited by the
sources and traditions available to him. Nonetheless the information he gives is
useful background to the letters which St Paul had written thirty years before. We understand Paul’s letters to the
Thessalonians, the Corinthians and the Ephesians all the better for knowing the account Luke gives in Acts. His 15th
chapter concerning the so-called Council in Jerusalem is a valuable supplement to what we read about early Christian
controversies in Paul’s letter to the Galatians.
Luke’s Acts of the Apostles is also a work of theology. The theology we find in it may not be of the depth which Paul
provides in his Letters or John in his gospel, but it is a sound theology which offers an appropriate guide to Christians
in that world, whether they were of gentile background with their multiple idols and many gods, or of Jewish ancestry
who valued the revelation of their scriptures. Out of several possible topics, I would like to comment Luke’s view of
the sacraments, which continue to nourish the Church in our own day.
The Acts of the Apostles assists us in understanding something about Baptism and Eucharist. The repeated mention
of baptism in Acts reminds us of the antiquity of this sacrament. When the crowds on Pentecost day asked Peter what
they should do, he replied that they should repent and be baptized (2:38). Obviously this practice was well known to
Luke’s first readers, although he never explains the significance of baptism as did Paul, who likened it to going down
into the tomb with Christ (Romans 6:3), or John who compared it to being reborn from above (John 3:7). It is also in
Acts that the Church finds the origins of the Sacrament of confirmation: the relevance of the outpouring of the Holy
Spirit on the first disciples at Pentecost (2:4), a similar outpouring in response to their prayer under persecution (4:31),
and again in Caesarea after the conversion of Cornelius, is obvious (10:44).
Likewise we find a number of references in Acts to the ‘breaking of bread’, almost certainly a reference to the
Eucharist. The reader knows all about this from Luke’s account of the Last Supper (Luke 22:19) and from his
description of the meal Jesus took with the two disciples on the Emmaus road, when ‘he had been known to them in
the breaking of bread’ (Luke 24:35). In Acts, Luke did not need to elaborate on the meaning of this ‘breaking of
bread’. He records that the Christians in Jerusalem continued the practice (2:42). So did Paul in Troas when the
community met ‘to break bread’ (20:7,11) and in the presence of 275 fellow passengers in a storm on his voyage to
Rome (27:35). Through this ‘breaking of bread’, the Lord became especially present to them.
One way to look at the Acts of the Apostles during the Easter season is to see it as a call to “go back to the future.”
That is to say, the Church today needs to relearn lessons that have been part of our history since the beginning. If you
have an hour or two this Easter season, you might try reading the Acts of the Apostles in one sitting. It’s the best way
to get a sense of the entire story. In many ways, it’s still our story, as we work to carry out the same mission given to
those first believers. During the fifty days of this Easter season, the Acts of the Apostles should give us hope that the
Holy Spirit will continue to guide the followers of the Risen Lord.

Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele!
W trakcie każdej niedzielnej Mszy Świętej oferuje się wiernym trzy czytania z Pisma
Świętego: pierwsze jest zazwyczaj zaczerpnięte z ksiąg Starego Testamentu, a po nim
następuje Psalm Responsoryjny. Drugia czytanie to najczęściej fragment jednego z listów Św.
Pawła, lub innego autora nowotestamentalnego. Ostatnie czytanie bibljne to ustęp z jednej z
czterech Ewangelii. Taki porządek niedzielnych czytań mszalnych jest zawieszony na okres
między Wielkanocą o uroczystością Zesłania Ducha Świętego. Przez te pięćdziesiąt dni
pierwsze czytanie zawsze jest wzięte z księgi Dziejów Apostolskich.
Dzieje Apostolskie to wyjątkowa księga Nowego Testamentu. Ewangelie
opowiadają o życiu i posłudze Jezusa, a listy apostołów były dokumentami,
którymi wymieniały się pierwsze wspólnoty chrześcijan. Księga Dziejów różni się
od Ewangelii oraz Listów tym, że opowiada ona historię rozprzestrzeniania się
chrześcijańskiej wiary od uczniów Chrytsusa w Jerozolimie aż po krańce znanego
wówczas świata. Ta księga napisana przez Ewangelistę Łukasza nie jest,
oczywiście, historią we współczesnym rozumieniu tego słowa. Łukasz starał się
stworzyć opowieść pozwalającą nam wyobrazić sobie rożne ważne osoby i
wydarzenia, ale jego wiedza była ograniczona do dostępnych mu źródeł i
tradycyjnych przekazów ustnych. Mimo tych ograniczeń i nieścisłości, informacje z Dziejów Apostolskich pozwalają
nam lepiej zrozumieć tło oraz kontekst listów, które Św. Paweł pisał jakieś trzydzieści lat wcześniej. O wiele łatwiej jest
nam zrozumieć listy do Tesaloniczan, Koryntian, i Efezjan dzięki temu, co dowiadujemy się z Łukaszowej opowieści
Łukasza. Z kolei 15 Dziejów rozdział traktujący o tzw. Soborze Jerozolimskim jest niezwykle cennym świadectwem
poważnego konfliktu we wczesnym Kościele i apostolskiego sposobu jego rozwiązania.
Poza walorami historycznymi, Dzieje Apostolskie są także księgą teologiczną. Teologia Św. Łukasza nie ma tej samej
głębi co myśl Św. Pawła zawarta w jego listach, czy też mistyka Św. Jana z kart jego Ewangelii. Jest to jednak zdrowa
teologia obrazująca wiarę wczesnych wspólnot chrześcijańskich, tych o pogańsich korzeniach z mnóstwem bóstw, jak i
tych wywodzących się z Judaizmu. Spośród wielu teologicznych tematów poruszonych w Dziejach Apostolskich
chciałbym zwrócić waszą uwagę na Łukaszowe rozumienie sakramentów, które aż do dzisiaj są pokarmem
utrzymującym Kościół przy życiu. Lektura Dziejów Apostolskich pomaga nam w lepszym zrozumieniu Chrztu oraz
Eucharystii. Wspominany wielokrotnie w tej księdze obrzęd chrztu przypomina nam o antycznym charakterze tego
sakramentu. Kiedy ludzie słuchający Piotra w dzień Pięćdziesiątnicy pytają się co mają zrobić, on im odpowiada że
powinni się nawrócić i ochrzcić (2:38). Ta praktyka musiała być już dobrze znana pierwszym czytelnikom Dziejów, bo
w przeciwieństwie do Pawła, Łukasz nie wyjaśnia znaczenia chrztu i jego podobieństwa do zstąpienia do grobu razem
z Chrystusem (Rzymian 6:3). To również w Dziejach Kościół upatruje korzeni sakramentu bierzmowania: centralnym
wydarzeniem jest wylanie Ducha Świętego na pierwszych uczniów w dzień Pięćdziesiątnicy (2:4), które później
powtarza się w obliczu prześladowań (4:31), oraz w Cezarei po nawróceniu Korneliusza (10:44). Na kartach tej księgi
znajdujemy również wiele nawiązań do „łamania chleba”, które są bez wątpienia odnoszą się do Eucharystii. Czytelnik
od razu przywołuje sobie na pamięć scenę łamania chleba z Ostatniej Wieczerzy opisanej przez Łukasza w jego
pierwszej księdze (Łukasz 22:19) oraz z opisu posiłku jaki Jezus spożywał razem z uczniami w Emmaus, kiedy to
„objawił im się przy łamaniu chleba” (Łukasz 24:35). W Dziejach Apostolskich Św. Łukasz nie rozwodzi się nad
znaczeniem tego obrzędu, zaznacza jednak że wspólnota jerozolimska praktykowała go regularnie (2:42). Św. Paweł w
Dziejach zastaje wspólnotę w Troadzie na „łamaniu chleba” (20:7,11) a podczas podróży morskiej do Rzymu on sam
„łamie chleb” w otoczeniu 275 innych pasażerów (27:35). W Dziejach Apostolskich zmartwychwstały i żyjący
Chrystus staje się obecny we wspólnocie wiary.
Jednym z możliwych sposobów współczesnej interpretacji Dziejów Apostolskich jest spojrzenie na tę księgę jako na
„powrót do przyszłości.” Mam przez to na myśli bardzo realną potrzebę Kościoła by uczyć się na nowo lekcji, które
przerabialiśmy już w pierwszym wieku. Zachęcam by każda i każdy z nas w tym wielkanocnym okresie znalazł godzinę
lub dwie na lekturę Dziejów Apostolskich „od deski do deski” – to jest najlepszy sposób na całościowe spojrzenie na
arcyważny okres formowania się chrześcijańskiej wspólnoty i jej wiary. Jest to przecież historia naszej rodziny i to my
jesteśmy odpowiedzialny za kolejne karty jej dziejów. Niech pięćdziesiąt dni Wielkanocnego okresu pomoże nam
wszystkim w przyjęciu Ducha Świętego!

6 kwietnia: Drugi Dzień Świąt “Śmigus-Dyngus”
Experience a tradition that is more than 1000
years old! Since 966 AD the Second Day of
Easter has been associated with the baptism of
Prince Mieszko I. Tradition states that Prince
Mieszko I along with his court were baptized
on Easter Monday. Thus, “Dyngus Day” and
its rites of sprinkling with water have become a
folk celebration in thanksgiving for the fact that the first
king of Poland was baptized and thus brought Christian
faith to Poland. In more modern times, the tradition
continued when farm boys in Poland wanted to attract
notice from the girls of their choice - it was custom to
throw water and hit the girls on their legs with twigs or
pussywillows. Join us for a special Dyngus Day outdoor
Mass at 6:00 p.m. and be ready to get wet!

oblewanie się wodą ma swoje korzenie w
966 roku, kiedy to Mieszko I przyjął chrzest
ze swoim dworem właśnie w Wielkanocny
poniedziełek. Na pamiątkę tak ważnego
wydarzenia, dzięki któremu Polska zaistniała na mapie
chrześcijańskiej Europy, Polacy w ojczyźnie i za granicą
obchodzą drugi dzień świąt jako “lany poniedziałek.”
W naszej parafii odprawiona będzie tego dnia Msza
“pod chmurką” o godzinie 6 wieczorem – serdecznie
zapraszamy i prosimy o przybycie z grubym ręcznikiem!

On Saturday, May 2nd, the St. Stanislaus Pride Team will
be hosting a Benefit Rummage Sale from 8am until 1pm
to pay for vendor fees and other things we need to
purchase for the Pride Festival in June. We are asking
our Parishioners to clean out their closets, and
attics and donate unused items. This will be a
great help to us as we continue to spread the
message of St. Stanislaus across St. Louis! You

Formation meetings for ALL readers, Eucharistic
ministers, and altar servers will be held on the weekend
of May 9th and 10th. On Saturday (May 9th) we will
meet at 5:00 p.m. (immediately after 4:00 p.m. Mass) and
on Sunday (May 10th) the meeting will take place at 8:00
a.m. (prior to 9:00 a.m. Mass). All who volunteer as
readers, Eucharistic ministers, and altar servers are
strongly encouraged to attend one of these meetings.

In line with our long-standing tradition, we will celebrate
a joyful devotion of May Crowning on Sunday, May 10th
at 10:15 a.m. (in between the English and Polish Mass).
This year we will gather for the third time at our new,
beautiful statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary located in the
garden area next to the side entrance to our church.
This joyful celebration will continue with the ceremony
of retiring of the old flags and raising the new ones at the
main entrance to our parking lot. We will be
assisted in this beautiful ceremony by soldiers from the
318th PSYOP Company at the Jefferson Barracks.
Bring your friends and neighbors to join us for
such a special occasion!
June 4: 25th Annual Forest Park Hat Luncheon
For the first time ever, St. Stanislaus is going to
participate in the Annual Forest Park Hat Luncheon.
We are going to have one or two “themed” tables for the
luncheon depending on how many people from our
parish wish to participate. Men and Women are invited
to participate wearing hats that honor our Polish
Heritage in colors of red and white. The cost
for the luncheon is $125.00 per person (this is a
correction over last month’s bulletin). Please

Nasza Parafia będzie w tym roku po raz pierwszy
uczestniczyć w Lanczu Kapeluszników w Forest Parku.
Planujemy zarezerwowanie dwóch stolików i nadanie im
tematów związacych z polską tradycją i kulturą.
Zapraszamy tak panie jak i panów do udziału w tej
imprezie! Organizatorki z chęcią będą służyć pomocą
przy projektowaniu i wykonaniu kapeluszy o
polskiej tematyce. Koszt biletu to 125$ (z czego 60

June 7: Corpus Christi Sunday
7 czerwca: Uroczystość Bożego Ciała
On the feast of Corpus Christi we celebrate in a special
way our Catholic faith in Jesus’ Real Presence in the
Eucharist. On this June Sunday, following the 9:00 a.m.
Mass (the only Mass on that day) we will have a
procession with the Most Holy Sacrament around the
streets of our neighborhood, professing our faith and
singing Eucharistic hymns at four altars.
After Mass and Procession we will enjoy a BBQ
potluck luncheon - please contact Donna Nachefski

Raz w roku w Uroczystość Bożego Ciała w szczególny
sposób świętujemy prawdę naszej wiary o prawdziwej
obecności Pana Jezusa w eucharystycznych znakach
chleba oraz wina. W tę czerwcową niedzielę, po
Mszy o godz. 9:00 rano (jedyna Msza tej niedzieli)
odbędzie się uroczysta procesja do czterech
ołtarzy, w trakcie której damy świadectwo naszej
wierze.

27-28 czerwca: Katolicy na Święcie Równości
Representatives from our Parish will be participating in
St. Louis Pride Festival (June 27-28). Along with other
Catholic inclusive parishes and organizations (St. Clare
and Francis, Catholic Action Network, and others) we
will give witness to God’s unconditional love towards
every person. At the same time we will spread the word
about our awesome parish community and encourage all
who seek a welcoming church to “give us a try”.

July 10 & 11: Summer Festival
10 & 11 lipca: Festyn Parafialny
This year we are extending our annual Summer Festival
to a 2-day event! Friday, July 10th, from 6-10pm we will
have a beer garden with live music. On Saturday, July
11th, there will be washer tournaments, Polish items,
sandwiches and pierogis, souvenir booths, a kids play
area with fun activities for your little ones,
silent auctions, and a parishioner “Show Me”
booth (an opportunity for our members to
show off any hobbies, side jobs, or interests
they wish to share.) Saturday dinners will be
served from 2-7pm and live music from 124pm & 5-9pm. Come and join us for a whole
weekend of fun!
Nasz wspaniały Festyn Parafialny będzie w tym roku
dwudniową imprezą! W piątek (10 lipca) zapraszamy do
ogrodu z piwem i muzyką na żywo od 6 do 10
wieczorem. W sobotę (11 lipca) czekają na nas niezwykłe
atrakcje i zabawy na każdy wiek: turnieje sportowe,
zabawy dla najmłodszych, stragany z polskimi
upominkami, aukcje, oraz specjalne stoisko

POLISH HISTORY: KATYN MASSACRE OF 1940
The "Katyn Massacre" is a symbolic term, referring to
one of the places of extermination of the Polish leading
elite during the Second World War, the first to be
discovered - the Katyn forest near Smolensk.
The Katyn Massacre was the secret execution by the
Soviets of almost 22,000 citizens of the Polish state who
- after the Red Army entered Poland on September 17,
1939 - were taken prisoner or arrested. Pursuant to a
secret decision of the Politburo of the Central
Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union
(Bolsheviks) of March 5, 1940, approximately 15,000
POWs, previously held in special
NKVD camps in Kozelsk,
Ostashkov and Starobilsk, and
7,000 persons interned in prisons
of the western district of the
Ukrainian and Belarusian republic,
i.e. the eastern territories of Poland
included into the Soviet Union in
1939, were killed with a shot in the
back of the head.
The victims were mainly important
citizens of the Polish state: officers
of the Polish Army and the Police,
officials of the state administration,
and representatives of intellectual
and cultural elites in Poland. They
were buried anonymously in mass
graves, in at least five places within
the territory of the Soviet Union. In
April-May 1940, POWs from three
special NKVD camps were
transported by trains to the places
of execution: Katyn (from the
Kozelsk camp), Kalinin (from the Ostashkov camp),
from Kharkiv (Starobilsk camp). Those killed in Kalinin
(currently Tver) were buried in Mednoye. Others, held in
prisons and murdered there, were buried in previously
undetermined places; two are known: in the Belarusian
Republic and the Ukrainian Republic of the USSR
(Kuropaty near Minsk and Bykivnia near Kiev).
After the outbreak of the German-Soviet war and the
Polish Government-in-Exile initiating official relations
with the Government of the Soviet Union in the
summer of 1941, the Soviet authorities failed to provide
Poles - despite their efforts - with any information
concerning those "missing in action". The Soviet Union
broke the alliance in April 1943, when the German Army
stationed in the Smolensk region discovered a burial
ground in the Katyn Forest and attacked the Soviet
Union for propaganda purposes.
Soviet authorities responded with the tactic of pinning
the blame on the Germans who had allegedly murdered
Poles after entering those territories in 1941. Stalin, using
the pretext of "slander against the USSR", broke
relations with the Polish Government-in-Exile (in
London).
The "Katyn" case was one the best guarded secrets of
the Kremlin during the entire USSR period. When, after
the end of the Second World War, during the
Nuremberg Trials, the Soviet Union failed to pin the
blame for the massacre on the Germans (but at the same
time managed to avoid being
judged for its deeds), the Soviet
authorities permanently adopted
the interpretation of the "Katyn
lie", in defiance of the facts: the
Soviets had nothing to do with the
massacre of Polish officers German fascism is responsible for
everything...
After the system changes in the
entire Soviet bloc (1989-1991), the
demand for the explanation of the
truth about "Katyn" also appeared
on the Russian side. Many
Russians helped in discovering the
truth about that crime. In the years
1990-1992 the main "Katyn"
documents
were
disclosed,
including the decision of the
Politburo
of
the
Central
Committee of the Communist
Party of the Soviet Union of
March 5th 1940, signed among
others by Stalin. In August 1993, a group of Russian
historians developed an exhaustive expert appraisal in
Moscow, presenting honestly the process of the crime
and the subsequent lies.
Those guilty of this crime have never been judged.
Although the people who made the decision are known,
as are over one hundred executioners (the list of persons
rewarded for the "camp clearing" campaign was
disclosed). However, the investigation on the Russian
side was discontinued, and the Russian authorities refuse
to make any comments on this subject. No one has been
and no one will be punished for the crime. There is a
material trace of the crime. Three cemeteries built by the
Poles - in Katyn, Mednoye and Kharkiv - where each and
every one from among almost 15,000 Polish POWs is
commemorated by name. This is an exception among the
graveyards remaining after the crimes of the Soviet power.
SAINT OF THE MONTH
ŚWIĘTA MIESIĄCA
Catherine of Siena was the 23rd child of Jacopo and
Lapa Benincasa and grew up as an intelligent, cheerful
and intensely religious person. She disappointed her
mother by cutting off her hair as a protest against being
overly encouraged to improve her appearance in order to
attract a husband. Her father ordered her to be left in
peace and she was given a room of her own for prayer
and meditation. Catherine entered the Dominican Third
Order at 18 and spent the next three years in seclusion,
prayer and austerity. Gradually a group of followers
gathered around her - men and women, priests and
religious. An active public apostolate grew out of her
contemplative life. Her letters,
mostly for spiritual instruction and
encouragement of her followers,
began to take more and more note
of public affairs. Opposition and
slander resulted from her mixing
fearlessly with the world and
speaking with the candor and
authority of one completely
committed to Christ. She was
cleared of all charges at the
Dominican General Chapter of
1374. Her public influence reached
great heights because of her evident
holiness, her membership in the
Dominican Third Order, and the
deep impression she made on the
pope. She worked tirelessly for the
crusade against the Turks and for
peace between Florence and the
Papal State. When the Black Death
swept through her city, she had no
hesitation in caring for the
victims. She worked as a nurse. She
dug graves for those who died of the plague and then
buried them properly herself.
She accompanied
prisoners who were condemned to death to the place of
execution waiting with them and praying for them to the
end.
Exhausted by her unceasing work, Catherine died in
1380 at the age of thirty-three. She died surrounded by
her “spiritual children”. Catherine ranks high among the
mystics and spiritual writers of the Church. In 1970 Paul
VI named her and Teresa of Avila as doctors of the
Church. In recent years, it has been suggested that she
(among other possibilities) should be named the patron
saint of the Internet. Her feast day is celebrated on April
29th.
Katarzyna ze Sieny była 23 dzieckiem Jacopo i Lapy
Benincasa. Wychowała się ona w rodzinie inteligneckiej
oraz głęboko wierzącej. Jako nastolatka obcięła krótko
włosy na znak protestu wobec nalegań swojej matki by
przypodobać się kandydatom na męża. Jej ojciec, na
szczęście nakazał wszystkim zostawić ją w spokoju, co
pozwoliło Katarzynie na oddanie się studiom i
modlitwie. Po ukończeniu 18 roku życia Katarzyna
wstąpiła do Trzeciego Zakonu Domikańskiego i kolejne
trzy lata spędziła w zupełnym odosobnieniu. Kiedy
miała 21 lat, poczuła wewnętrzny nakaz powrotu do
swej rodziny i rozpoczęcia aktywnego życia wśród ludzi.
Z czasem zaczęła gromadzić się
wokół niej grupa naśladowców –
tak kobiet jak i mężczyzn, świeckich
i duchownych. Wyszukiwała
opuszczonych i potrzebujących
pomocy. Otoczona ludźmi, modliła
się z nimi i nauczała tego, czego
sama nauczyła się z obcowania z
Bogiem. Łączyła życie
kontemplacyjne z czynnym. Jej
listy, rozważania i medytacje coraz
częściej wypowiadały się na temat
aktualnych wydarzeń społecznych.
Nie dziwi więc, że wobec takiego
zaangażowania kobiety w sprawy
społeczne zrodziła się silna
opozycja w kręgach kościelnych. Po
czasie oczyszczono ją ze wszystkich
zarzutów na Kapitule Generalnej
Zakonu Dominikańskiego w 1374
roku. Jej wpływ na sprawy
państwowe i kościelne coraz
bardziej się umacniał i kilku papieży
bardzo się liczyło z jej zdaniem. W
czasie epidemii czarnej śmierci Katarzyna bez chwili
namysłu poświeciła się opiece nad chorymi, pracując
jako pielegniarka oraz osobiście kopiąc zmarłym. Wiele
czasu spędziła również opiekując się więźniami i
osobami skazanymi na śmierć, często dodajać im otuchy
w czasie egzekucji.
Wyczerpana nieustannym fizycznym wysiłkiem
Katarzyna zmarła w 1380 roku w wieku 31 lat w
otoczeniu swoich “duchowych dzieci”. Zalicza się ją do
grona wielkich mistyków i duchowych autorów. W 1970
r. Paweł VI ogłosił ją, razem Teresą z Avilą, Doktorem
Kościoła. Obecnie wymienią się ją jako jedną z patronek
Internetu. Jej wspomnienie liturgiczne obchodzi się 29
kwietnia.
