SUMMARY “Cisy w Mogilnie” is one of the nine nature reserves that protect European yew in the Polish Western Carpathians. The local yew population is one of the largest mountain populations of this species in Poland. Detailed studies of the population structure and health status of each specimen were carried out in 2011 and 2012. A total of 1 272 yew specimens (over 0.5 m high) occur on an area of ca. 36 ha, which means that the number of yews increased almost twice during the 50 years. Also seedlings and undergrowth of the protected species occurred in the reserve, but their spatial distribution was irregular. The yew specimens are distributed over the nature reserve area in clusters. The majority of them grow on gentle slopes exposed to the north, while others prefer steep slopes of the streams’ banks (Fig. 2). In terms of altitude, their distribution in the reserve ranges from 556 m to 715 m above sea level. The height distribution of the local yew population specimens resembles, to some extent, the theoretical normal distribution, however, a discrepancy between the actual height distribution and the theoretical one is rather high (Fig. 7). The tallest yew in the nature reserve is 13 m high, while the female yew specimen growing outside the boundaries of the reserve is 19 m high (Fig. 9). The most numerous are 5.5–6.5 m yew specimens. Similarly to the height distribution, also the DBH distribution resembles the theoretical one. Also in this case, however, there are discrepancies between both patterns (Fig. 10). The DBH of yew specimens varies from 1.3 to 44.6 cm. The thickest specimen (nature monument) is growing outside the borders of the nature reserve − its stem circumference is 393 cm (Fig. 9). In the whole population, only seven specimens of varying size were found dead. The percentage of specimens with determined sex is very low (15%), including ca. 12% produced female flowers, and 3% – male flowers. The sex could not be determined for 85% of specimens, because they have not produced any flowers in the year when the study was carried out. It was found that as many as 89% of the yew population consist of specimens having vigorous, healthy crowns with deeply green needles and with no signs of any discolouration or defoliation (Fig. 12). On the other hand, the damaged stems were found in many yew specimens (67.4%; Fig. 13), which was caused mainly (35.5%) by various rot fungi. As far as the health status of the yew specimens is concerned, an interesting phenomenon was observed in the reserve, i.e. ca. 4.4% of stems had symptoms of bark peeling, and another 3.6% had traces of being grazed by red deer and roe-deer. Despite the fact that the European yew population protected in the nature reserve is large and still growing, its further maintenance is far from being secured. A low percentage of specimens producing flowers and poor seed production result in unsatisfactory natural regeneration of yew. Adverse growing conditions, such as a disturbed stand structure and strong competition from herbaceous vegetation dominated by blackberry (Rubus hirtus), reduce the establishment of seedlings and regeneration of yew specimens. W latach 2009–2014 prowadzono terenowe prace monitoringowe w ramach projektu „Monitoring gatunków i siedlisk przyrodniczych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem specjalnych obszarów ochrony siedlisk Natura 2000 – faza III i faza IV”. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono zakres i wyniki prac monitoringowych wykonanych w latach 2009–2014 w odniesieniu do gatunków zwierząt i roślin. SUMMARY In the years 2009–2014, the Institute for Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Science coordinated the monitoring project entitled “Monitoring of species and natural habitats with particular regard to special areas of conservation of the Natura 2000 network – the 3rd and 4th phases”. The project was implemented within the framework of the State Monitoring of Environment, supervised by the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection and financed by the National Fund of Environmental Protection. The main objectives of the project were to develop monitoring methods for particular species and natural habitats and to conduct a monitoring survey in selected localities situated inside and outside the Natura 2000 network. The survey focused on the assessment of the status of populations and habitats of species, and the structure and functions of natural habitats. The results of monitoring were used as a basis of reports submitted to the European Commission on the conservation status of species and habitats in the biogeographical regions. Organization and methodical assumptions, as well as the results of the 1st and 2nd phases of the monitoring program were presented, among others, in the “Chrońmy Przyrodę Ojczystą” (Makomaska-Juchiewicz et al. 2009). In the years 2009–2014, the project was continued. There were monitored 96 animal species at more than 2200 sites and 60 plant species, at 705 sites. Some species were surveyed twice in this period. For most of the plant species, the monitored sites are a good representation of their populations. The results of the monitoring project indicated that the conservation status of animal species was favourable at only 31% of the surveyed sites. At most of the sites, the status was unfavourable: inadequate U1 (at 31.4% of the sites and bad U2 at 30.4% of the sites (Fig. 4). Of the three parameters of the conservation status, the population got the lowest score. This parameter had the lowest percentage of FV (39%) and the highest percentage of U2 (27.6%) (Fig. 5). The best assessed parameter was the habitat of species. The comparison of the monitoring results between the two biogeographical regions did not show large differences in the conservation status of animal species. In the alpine region, however, the percentage of sites with bad conservation status was lower and the quality of species’ habitats was better than in the continental region (Figs 6, 7). For more than half of the surveyed animal species (61.5%), the monitoring results allowed to conclude on their conservation status at a national level (Fig. 8). For other species, the sample of the surveyed sites was too small. The results of the monitoring of plant species were similar. The conservation status of plant species was also unfavourable at most of the monitored sites. The percentage of favourable assessments (FV) was only 30%, while that of unfavourable-inadequate (U1) amounted to 36% and that of unfavourable-bad – 32.7% (Fig. 9). It was the status of habitats which decided about the assessment of the overall conservation status as U1, while the bad conservation status U2 was most often the result of the bad status of populations (Fig. 10). Future prospects were the best assessed parameter; it was favourable at about 50% of the sites. It has been found that the conservation status of plant species is better in the alpine region where it was assessed as favourable at about 45% of the surveyed sites, and as bad at only 17.5%. In the continental region, the respective values amounted to 24.9% and 38.3%. The percentage of sites with unfavourable-inadequate U1 conservation status of plant species were similar in both regions – about 36% (Fig. 11). Assessments of particular parameters of conservation status are also better in the alpine region, especially of the habitat and future prospects (Fig. 12). Assessments of the conservation status at the monitored sites were used to conclude on the conservation status of plant species in the country (Fig. 13). SUMMARY The damages caused by brown bears are compensated in many countries of Europe. In Poland damages caused by bears are compensated by the government since 1970; however the study of the compensation of bear damages and its underlying causes is still poorly addressed. Here we aimed at analyzing the spatial and temporal distribution of the compensation of damages caused by bears in Podkarpackie Voivodeship from 1999 to 2014. A total of 545 damages were compensated in the study period, from which 97% were damages to apiaries. An average of 34 (SD = 26.5) damages were compensated per year, although the variations were high, ranging from 0 to 99 compensations in 2006 and 2010, respectively. On average, 60,575 PLN (SD = 65,077.1) were compensated per year, and 1,785 PLN (SD = 1,942.8) were compensated per damage. The majority of the compensated damages (70%) occurred between April and August, with the highest peak in April (Fig. 3). Although compensated properties were located across the whole bear distribution in Podkarpackie, damages occurred more frequently in certain areas or hotspots. In comparison with other protected species and other countries with compensation schemes, the costs associated with damages caused by bears in Poland are very low. We highlight the importance of management and conservation policies that implement and subsidize measures to prevent damages in order to minimize compensation costs. To prevent efficiently the occurrence of damages caused by bears, we propose the creation of risk maps that allow the identification of more vulnerable areas to prioritize conservation efforts. SUMMARY The protected and rare Small Pasque Flower Pulsatilla pratensis (L.) Mill. (Ranunculaceae) was found at the new site, previously unknown to botanists, in Pęchcin near Ciechanów (Central Poland, Ciechanów Plateau, Mazovia province) during fieldwork in 2012 and 2013. The observed population consists of nearly 300 clumps, most of them generative ones. Pasque flowers grow in open pine forest near arable fields, meadows, pastures and hives. Due to relatively intensive agriculture and horticulture near this locality and beauty of this species, often illegally collected from natural populations, monitoring and other forms of active protection (site of ecological interest) of this population are necessary. 470
