COURSE AIMS:
The students will study design and and construction of a chair; they will also study the
properties of wood, wooden materials, and technologies that are applied in furniture production
Entry Requirements:
 Ability to use scale
 Basics of orthogonal projection
 Basic knowledge of design process.
COURSE CONTENTS:
Lecture topics:
 Construction of individual elements of a chair
 Analysis of different types of chairs
 Properties of wood
 Wooden materials
 Worldwide trends in furniture design
 Modern technologies within furniture design
Class contents:
The main focus of the classes is on the realisation of the students’ projects. Classes on The
Basics of furniture Design feature individual corrections. The course will examine the basics of
materials and materials technologies and the practicalities of furniture design. Orthogonal
projections will be used to show a piece of furniture (to scale)

TEACHING METHODS:
While much of the course is devoted to the realisation of the students’ projects, the course will involve
use of multi-media presentations; slide shows and film. Students are expected to use the course
contact hours to discuss design-related issues in groups.
TEACHING OUTCOMES:
Knowledge
K_W01: demonstration of awareness of the design process of a simple piece of furniture
The student is familiar with all stages of furniture design from the initial concept, orthogonal
projection, models on a scale of 1:10, through the visualisation of the piece of furniture.
KW_04-the student has a basic knowledge of serial furniture production and is able to use it in
their designs.
KW_06-the student shows an awareness of the key literature on the history of interior design
and furniture design.
Skills
K_U02: a knowledge and use of appropriate computer software to design a simple form a seat
or chair
K_U03: demonstration of the concept of a chair or seat in the form of a hand-drawn sketch
K-U11: ability to make key design decisions during the design process
K-U14: demonstration of practical skills sufficient to realise the design during the course
Social competence
K_K04: research, analysis and interpretation of information during the design process
K_K10: use of appropriate computer programmes (CAD) to move from design to realisation
TEACHING OUTCOMES VERIFICATION ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
The students will be assessed on their ability to implement fundamentals of furniture design in
their realised projects. Knowledge of the syllabus will be assessed in class.
Assessment criteria:
 Attendance is compulsory
 Active participation in class is expected
 In accordance with the syllabus, students will be assessed on the three stages of furniture
design:
Stage I:
presentation of a design concept in sketch form at a scale of 1:10
Stage II:
selection of materials for furniture desidn, construction concept, choice of technology.
Stage III:
presentation of a piece furniture, its detail in three orthogonal projections.
