Swantewit`s Grove Swantewit`s Wäldchen Lasek Świętowita
Swantewit’s Grove Swantewit’s Wäldchen Lasek Świętowita “May an ancient tree be…a holy thing…never regard them without veneration and delight…” (s. 66) Swantewit’s Grove will memorialise three aspects of the region’s history—its Sorb heritage, its artistic embellishment by Pueckler, and its exploitation by open cast mining. The West Slavic Wends, known as Sorbs, have lived in this region since the sixth century, pantheistic paganism until the 12th century. The grove is named for Swantewit, the supreme god of the Baltic Slavs, known as the God of War and Prosperity, and as protector of fields and crops. His holy tree is the oak. Pueckler includes an account of an ancient temple dedicated to Swantewit in an oak grove at Muskau. All traces of Pueckler’s beloved hunting castle and its park will be obliterated by mining. On the main road south of Weisswasser, through a dark tunnel of pines, lies Swantewit’s Grove, at the edge of the Nochten mine. The combination of features here—earthen mound, oak grove, and PROJECTS 56 Swantewit’s Wäldchen erinnert an drei Aspekte der regionalen Geschichte: das sorbische Erbe, Pücklers künstlerische Gestaltung und die Tagebaunutzung. Section elevation Mine and pyramid views 2008. After mining ends in 2030, the grove will be a gateway to a network of paths through an evolving new landscape on the mine site. Paths lead to an ecopark, ruins of abandoned mining equipment, and the reconstructed hunting castle of Prince Pueckler. The design is simultaneously a memorial to the destroyed landscape and reminder of the regenerative power of nature. The earthen pyramid, symbolic of the obliteration of the natural landscape, recalls the burial tumuli of the pagan Sorbs, and also Pueckler’s burial pyramids at Branitz. In the center of three concentric earth ramparts is a circle of thick glass and lignite megaliths, inspired by the Sorbs’ inukshuk. They are symbolic of the ecological renewal of the landscape. Projekt stanowi zarazem przypomnienie zniszczeń krajobrazu, a także regenerujących sił natury. Piramida z ziemi, symbolizująca zniszczenia krajobrazu naturalnego, przypomina zarazem miejsca pochówków pogańskich Serbołużyczan, a także piramidę nagrobną Pücklera w Branitz. W centrum trzech koncentrycznych wałów ziemnych znajdzie się krąg z grubego szkła i brył węgla brunatnego, powstały z inspiracji serbołużyckich (inukshuk). Będzie to wyraz odnowy ekologicznej krajobrazu. PROJECTS 57
