Tematem spotkania jest architektura mieszkalna i związane
z nią problemy widziane z perspektywy lokatorów — materiał
bazuje na przykładach z Polski, ale nie brak w nim międzynarodowych odniesień. Wykładowi Agnieszki Sural będą towarzyszyć
elementy performansu, głos mieszkańców modernistycznego
osiedla. Dopełnieniem całości będą krótkie historie inicjowane
przez artystkę multimedialną Karolinę Bregułę i improwizowane
przez śpiewaczkę operową Joannę Cortes.

The meeting will be devoted to the issue of residential architecture from the perspective of its user — based on the example
of Poland, with some reference to international examples.
Agnieszka Sural’s lecture will be accompanied by performative
elements, representing the voice of the inhabitants of modernist housing estates. It will be complemented with short stories
introduced by artist Karolina Breguła and developed by the
opera singer Joanna Cortes.

Spotkanie zorganizowane w związku z wystawą w Pawilonie
Polskim jest poświęcone relacjom pomiędzy modernizmem,
władzą i śmiercią. Główne tematy, które będą poruszane podczas spotkania to wpływ nowoczesnej filozofii na kształtowanie
się pojęcia narodu w XIX i XX wieku, sposoby wyrażania władzy
w architekturze modernistycznej oraz instrumentalne posługiwanie się zbiorową pamięcią i motywem śmierci w budowaniu
nowoczesnych tożsamości politycznych, a także forma mauzoleum i jego rola w okresie międzywojennym.
The meeting will be devoted to the relationship between
modernism, power and death and will directly relate to the
exhibition in the Polish Pavilion. It will focus on links between
modernist philosophy and the emergence of nations in the
19th and 20th centuries, ways of expressing power in modern
architecture, and the instrumental use of death and memory
in creating modern political identities, as well as how the forms
and modes of presentation of mausoleums from the interwar
period were shaped.

W Polsce w latach 80. uwolniona od ideologicznych nacisków
i uwarunkowań architektura mogła wreszcie wyrażać treści antykomunistyczne. Po upadku rządów komunistycznych zatraciła
swój społeczny wymiar. Ten krytyczny moment rozpatrywany
w szerszym kontekście politycznym i ekonomicznym to główny
przedmiot dyskusji, dla której punktem odniesienia będzie
książka Naomi Klein Doktryna szoku: jak współczesny kapitalizm
wykorzystuje klęski żywiołowe i kryzysy społeczne.

Shock doctrine and architecture

In 1980s Poland, architecture rejected ideological domination
and oppression, and became an expression of the anti-Communist opposition. After the fall of the communist regime,
architecture lost its social touch and awareness. The debate will
focus on this turning point in the broader political and economic
context, using Naomi Klein’s The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of
Disaster Capitalism as a point of reference.
