HOW TO RECEIVE A GIFT
“Every worthwhile gift, every genuine benefit comes from above, descending from the Father.” —James 1:17
Our Father wants to
give us a “worthwhile
gift,” a “genuine benefit.”
He will give us this gift
as He gave us the gifts of
birth and rebirth (see 1 Pt
1:23). The Father will gift
us through a word spoken
in truth (Jas 1:18). If we
listen to this word (Jas
1:19) and act on it (Jas
1:22), we will receive our
gift.
For example, the Father
may want to give you the
gift of health. He may give
you this gift by speaking a
word, such as: “Repent!”
Possibly some patterns
in your life are sinful and
are hurting your health.
If you listen to this word,
you are on your way to receiving the gift of health.
You must “strip away all
that is filthy, every vicious
excess” (Jas 1:21). These
things obstruct your spiritual hearing. Then you
will hear God’s call to
repent. Finally, if you act
on this word by going to
Confession and accepting
God’s grace to repent, you
will have received God’s
gift of health.
This is only one example. It helps us see how
God gives gifts through
words to which we must
listen and act on. What
gifts does your Father
want to give you? What
words have “taken root
in you?” (Jas 1:21) Are
you “quick to hear” (Jas
1:19)? Are you humbly
welcoming these words?
(Jn 1:21) Are you acting
on this word, or deceiving
yourself? (Jas 1:22) Receive God’s gifts!

„Umyć ręce…”
eatralna

Piłata, tuż przed
wydaniem
wyroku
śmierci na Jezusa, urosła
do rangi ewangelicznego symbolu. Mówi o
próbie ucieczki przed
odpowiedzialnością. Piłat
był poganinem. Umywał
ręce publicznie. Chciał
w ten sposób ukazać
ludziom, że nie jest winien przelania krwi Proroka z Nazaretu. Chciał
się usprawiedliwić przed
ludźmi. Nie trzeba być
wnikliwym
obserwatorem, by dostrzec, jak
często ludzie uciekają
się do gestu Piłata, jak
łatwo umywają swe ręce
od
odpowiedzialności
za swoje czyny. Szkoda, że chrześcijanie
pilniej naśladują w tym
względzie pogańskiego
prokuratora Judei, niż
Zbawiciela. Gest umywania rąk był znany
nie tylko poganom.
Żydzi również umywali
ręce, i to wiele razy w
ciągu dnia. Chodziło im
zarówno o zachowanie
higieny, jak i o wykonanie przepisu prawa
religijnego. Obmywanie
rąk miało oznaczać
troskę o czystość serca.
Nie chodziło zatem o
wzgląd na ludzi, jak to
miało miejsce u Piłata,
lecz o wzgląd na Boga.

Początkowo gest umycia rąk miał głęboką
wymowę. Szybko jednak został zredukowany jedynie do pustego
zewnętrznego
znaku,
któremu nie odpowiadało
wewnętrzne
nastawienie. Jezus widząc to
zakłamanie
mocno
zaatakował tę praktykę.
Przed Bogiem ważna
jest czystość nie rąk,
lecz serca. „Serca ludzkiego pochodzą złe
myśli, nierząd, kradzieże,
cudzołóstwa, chciwość,
przewrotność, podstęp,
wyuzdanie,
zazdrość,
obelgi, pycha, głupota.
Wszystko to zło z
wnętrza pochodzi i czyni
człowieka nieczystym”.
Prawdziwa
religijność
polega na czystości serca.
Ono musi być nie tylko
obmyte, lecz wypełnione
dobrymi myślami, szacunkiem do człowieka,
pragnieniem
niesienia
pomocy, umiłowaniem
prawdy i mądrością. Jezus znając ludzką słabość,
nigdy nie stawia – jako
warunku przynależności
do Boga – wolności od
jakiegokolwiek
grzechu. Nie. On domaga
się
odpowiedzialności
za każdy czyn, a więc
i za grzech. Umywanie
rąk jako ucieczka od
odpowiedzialności
jest klęską człowieka.
Grzech trzeba przynieść
do Boga, bowiem tylko On może nas z
niego
usprawiedliwić.
Jako
chrześcijanie
nie możemy w umywaniu rąk naśladować
ani Piłata, ani Żydów.
Naszym
niedościgłym
wzorem jest sam Zbawiciel umywający nie
swoje ręce, lecz nogi uczniów. On sam w Wieczerniku dał nam przykład
pełnej odpowiedzialności
za drugiego człowieka
i w formie przykazania
nowego, wezwał nas,
byśmy sobie wzajemnie
nogi umywali.

Reading Paul
A START - Thanks to all who have registered
for the course and for your patience expecting word of the course. This course will be held
monthly on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm (straight
after the evening Mass). The first meeting will be
on Tuesday 22nd September at 7.30 pm in the
hall.
WHAT’S INVOLVED? Each meeting will
look at passages which appear from Paul’s letters
as they appear in our Sunday and daily lectionaries. We shall have a chance to read them out
loud, discuss them and look at the issues involved
in understanding and reading Paul in church and
for private prayer. Fr Tom is also hoping to have
up and running a blog and or section on the website with his monthly reflections on the course to
which people can contribute and discuss – that bit
may take a little time to establish given the limits
to Fr Tom’s online ‘skills’!
STILL TIME - If you are a reader and have not
signed up, there is still time to do so. Please hand
your name into Fr Tom on or before Sunday 20th
September. Even if you decide afterwards to join

The Lay Associations in the diocese are
holding a Family Day
in various places
throughout the Diocese
(including Perth), with
the first one taking place
in Montrose on 5th
September from 11am3.30pm.
Representatives of the
Lay Societies will be
there to give out information and talk to
anyone who would like
to know about the work
being done.
There will be food
available, bouncy castle,
carousel, fun fair and
various games and activities for the children,
football at nearby links
Park, stalls and raffle.
All will be free of
charge. Mass will be
celebrated in St Margaret’s for those who wish
to attend and there will
be music and a piano recital during the day.

Exposition and Benediction- important announcement
There have been some doubts raised
by some of those who watch with the
Blessed Sacrament as to their ability to
attend in the coming weeks, especially
in the first couple of weeks of September. We would start exposition this
coming week only to have to suspend
it for the following few weeks. Further,
the clergy of the parish have met and
we have misgivings about the current
practice. We feel that we need to take
another look at this and our whole
attitude to the Eucharist and our behaviour before the Blessed Sacrament.
Over the next few weeks we shall be
addressing this issue. In the meantime
we propose the following:
1. That we not recommence exposition and benediction this Monday
2. We assure that there enough people to commit
to watch with the Blessed Sacrament in future.
Realistically, this number should be around 40 in
total for an 8 hour period.
3. We enter a period of catechesis on the liturgy
and the Eucharist and Eucharistic adoration.
4. That, if we get enough volunteers and only if we
get enough volunteers, we recommence exposition at the beginning of October and run it all
the way through to Christmas as a trial period.
5. On the basis of the three month trial, we shall
take the decision in the New Year whether or
not to continue on a permanent basis.
