GOD’S SUMMONS
If we are not to witness concretely to the
love of Christ in our lives, then we are truly
salt that has gone tasteless. Our flavor and
impact are lost. How difficult it is to get
them back again.
In the late 1940s the Christophers movement began in the
United States. The Christophers’ motto, “It is better to light one
candle than to curse the darkness,” attracted many through the
Christophers’ effective use of the media, advertising, and the
encouragement of its members to proclaim Christ in the workplace.
Jesus calls us to be that candle and to set ourselves in the
most visible place. Jesus, who brought eternal light to the
world, tells us that we, too, are the light of the world. Through
our words and actions we must let our light shine in the sight
of all so that in seeing our good works, everyone may give
praise to God.

BOY SCOUTS AND CUB SCOUTS SUNDAY
On Feb. 9th we welcome the fine young men of Boy Scout
Troop #173 and Cub Scout Pack #173 to the 9:30am liturgy.
They are grateful for St. Joseph Parish’s continued support and
sponsorship of scouting as the troop celebrates over 175 years
of service to our parish.
BASILICA CHOIR CD
Additional copies of our Christmas CD have been obtained
and are available in the rectory. Although the Christmas season
has passed, it is a good opportunity to listen and reminisce
about the miracle of Christmas.

NOVENA AND DEVOTIONS TO ST. JOSEPH
Every Wednesday evening at 7:00pm we ask parishioners and
friends, who seek Divine assistance in their personal and family
life through the intercession of St. Joseph, to join us for the
Novena prayer. The primary role of not only St. Joseph, but all
the saints, is to lead all people to God. All special graces even
miracles people received through the intercession of various
saints is the obvious proof that God cares for our well being.
St. Joseph who is closely connected to Jesus Christ is a most
powerful intercessor on our behalf. On February 12th, Lectors
of St. Joseph’s are invited to take part in this Novena and assist
in bringing the statue into the sanctuary. Please use the forms
in the Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel to voice your petitions.
CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL
The collection for Catholic Home Missions Appeal will be
taken at all Masses at our Basilica on the weekend of Feb. 15 &
16. Through annual grants, Catholic Home Missions funds
catechesis, seminarian education, lay ministry training, Hispanic ministry and other pastoral programs in needy dioceses.
Grants help to cover the cost of preparing 10 seminarians,
whose education costs $35,000-$37,000 per person per year.
As future priests of the diocese, they will be relied on to make
the sacraments available and provide a Catholic presence to the
faithful.
With your support this appeal can continue to provide essential pastoral outreach in home mission dioceses. Your support
will truly make a difference!
CATHOLIC FREE PRESS
February is designated as Catholic Free Press month. Catholic media can help connect with truth and values through its
stories and photos to invigorate your faith and family life.
Through this publication we can all benefit from knowledge of
the learned, as well as those just beginning to explore their faith
and reason. We are fortunate to have a weekly newspaper in
our diocese.
I encourage you to subscribe to this media outlet by returning
the envelope in your monthly packet. The cost is only $30. I
am grateful to all who subscribe faithfully on an annual basis
and urge everyone to bring the CFP into your homes. Our
school and parish are often featured in the CFP.
RETREAT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Fr. Jonathan Slavinskas, Parochial Vicar of Blessed John
Paul II Parish, Southbridge, MA invites high school aged students of our parish to attend a retreat to be held on Saturday,
March 1st. The retreat focuses on specific talks which were
given by both experienced speakers along with the youth themselves in sharing personal testimonials. The retreats have continually grown the past several years and this year we are taking
it to the next level.

SCHOOL NEWS
Open House - We had a successful open house during Catholic Schools Week with 23 new families many towns and various cultural back grounds visiting our school. Obviously our
rigorous curriculum and formational programs appeal to people
who search for the best education for their children. The lower
grades, especially Pre-K are very popular and therefore anyone
considering our school should register as soon as possible.
The SJS Administration & Staff thanks all (HSA, Knights
of Columbus, Dora the International Explorer, Dunkin Donuts,
10 Alumni guest speakers, Buddy Bingo Volunteers, etc.) and
all the dedicated supporters who helped to make Catholic
Schools Week a Memorable Experience for the Students of
SJS.
Mark the Date: The Annual SJS Auction will be held on
Saturday, May 17th from 6:00-11:00pm at the PACC Hall.
Junior High “Night Out” - in the spirit of cooperation, students of grades 6, 7 and 8 from our three Catholic schools will
have an evening of games and fun at the St. Louis Gym on Fri.,
Feb. 14th from 6:00 to 9:00pm. Entry fee is $2.00. Refreshments will be served.

Rev. Thaddeus Stachura, Headmaster of St. Mary’s School is
offering a $2,000 ($1,000 per semester) scholarship to any
student from St. Joseph’s School in Webster to attend St.
Mary’s High School. This fund is part of the Msgr. Lekarczyk

We would appreciate if our parishioners would take the time

Diocese. Enclosed is a poster identifying these young men with

Father Mazzone asks that we pray each day for one of these
seminarians, asking the Lord to bless his ministry, studies and

The Saturday School of our Basilica is sponsoring a Mardi

YOUTH GROUP
Come and be a part of the Youth Group’s Interpretation of the
Passion of Our Lord. - The Youth Group Passion Play is an
annual event held on Good Friday. All interested young people
in grades 5-12 are encouraged to take part. No acting
experience necessary and the presentation is narrated, so actors
need not speak aloud. Practices are in the afternoons of March
30th, April 6th and April 13th at Sacred Heart Church. The
Passion Play will be presented on Good Friday, April 18th at

PIĄTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁĄ

“Wschodzi w ciemności jako światło dla prawych.” (Ps 112, 4)
Najgłębsza ciemność w ludzkim sercu to
egoizm i nieczułość. Czynią one człowieka
więźniem duchowych mroków, nawet jeśli
“błyszczy on słowem i mądrością”. Jezus
Chrystus, umierając za nas na krzyżu, zapalił ogień miłości,
zdolny rozproszyć wszelką ciemność. Stał się dla nas wcieloną
troską i miłosierdziem Boga. Blask bijący od krzyża rozprasza
mroki naszego egoizmu, życia dla siebie, i wypełnia nasze
serca miłosierną miłością. Sprawia że “ światło jaśnieje
w ciemnościach, a ciemność staje się południem.”
Dzisiejsza druga kolekta jest przeznaczona
na pokrycie kosztów utrzymania i energii.
Druka w kolekta w przyszłą niedzielę będzie przeznaczona
na Catholic Home Mission Appeal.

jako uciążliwy obowiązek, ale jako przyjaźń zawartą z Bogiem, na którego mogę liczyć w każdej sytuacji (...) Wiara wyznacza mi ostateczny cel w
życiu i sposób na jego osiągnięcie. Wiara jest nieodłącznie związana z Bogiem, który nigdy nie zostawia człowieka samego” (Piotr, kl. I)
Młodzi dostrzegają, że w dzisiejszym świecie, w otaczającej ich kulturze istnieje opór, pewna mentalność, która sprzeciwia się wierze. Ten opór
staje się widoczny zwłaszcza gdy zderza się z publicznym wyznawaniem wiary: „Żyjemy w świecie, który na każdym kroku neguje obecność
Boga. Ludzie, którzy przyznają się do wiary, często są wyśmiewani i odtrącani. Trudno otwarcie wyznawać swoje przekonania religijne, bez
narażania się na krytykę ze strony rosnącego grona ateistów. Społeczeństwo staje się coraz bardziej antykatolickie, o czym może świadczyć
niedawna batalia o krzyże. Mimo tak wielu przeciwności, wiara w Chrystusa u wielu ludzi nie słabnie i pozostaje niezmienna” (Jędrzej, kl. II).
„Wiara w obecnych czasach stała się dla ludzi czymś zbędnym. Wiele osób deklaruje się jako osoby niewierzące, lub przystępuje do sekt, wiele
osób przestaje praktykować... Wielu nie prowadzi dialogu z Bogiem przez modlitwę” (Anna, kl. II). Niektóre osoby dostrzegają, że życie bez wiary
rodzi smutek i beznadzieję: „Codziennie spotykam wielu ludzi. Większość z nich ma problemy egzystencjalne. Coś w rodzaju depresji, tylko na
większą skalę (...) Także mnie dopada czasem przygnębienie (...) Dopiero kiedy pojednam się z Bogiem, powraca radość życia (Agata, kl. III).
„Otaczający nas świat kusi nas rzeczami, które odwodzą od religii. Szczególnie nam trudno jest wyrzec się niektórych z nich, wytrwać w wierze.
Powinniśmy walczyć, bo walka toczy się o nasze dusze” (Magda, kl. II).
