Polylactide (PLA), a biodegradable polymer, produced from annually renewable natural resources, has a glass transition temperature in the range of 50-60oC. As a consequence, PLA is stiff and brittle at room temperature. Significant engineering effort was made to improve PLA’s mechanical performance. This was attempted mostly by blending of PLA with various substances which act as plasticizers and with other polymers. Blending of PLA with other polymers, immiscible with PLA, can lead to significant improvement of drawability and impact strength without any decrease of glass transition temperature. This is achieved by some modification of deformation micromechanisms involved. In this communication we present our study on blends of PLA with an atactic poly([R,S]-3-hydroxy butyrate) (aPHB). These blends are biodegradable, similarly to plain PLA, and can be considered as a potential material for packaging, especially for food. PLA (Mw=114k) and synthetic aPHB (Mn=100k) were melt-blended in a co-rotating double screw extruder. The compositions containing up to 20wt.% of aPHB were prepared. In the next processing step the foils approx. 0.3mm thick were extruded from the obtained blends. These materials were characterized by various techniques, including DSC,TGA, WAXS, SEM, DMTA and tensile tests. As revealed by DSC and SEM microscopic observations PLA and aPHB are only partially miscible and form phase-separated blends. Tg of the blend decreases slightly with an increase of aPHB concentration. Microscopic observation revealed sub-micron aPHB droplets with diffused interphases well dispersed in the PLA matrix. Partial miscibility results also in a slight modification of crystallization and melting temperatures of PLA crystals. Foils produced from the blend by extrusion on a ‘chill roll’ appeared completely amorphous and nearly not oriented. Tensile test at room temperature revealed a small decrease of the elastic modulus and the yield stress, while an increase of the ultimate strain with increasing content of aPHB. That change of tensile properties was related with the change of the deformation behavior and its micromechanisms. Plain PLA appears brittle and fractures easily due to crazing, whereas in blends easily cavitating aPHB particles act as craze intiators while terminate other crazes. This leads to craze multiplication and consequently plastic deformation proceeds to higher strains, up to 50% for 80:20 blend. Along with improvement of drawability at low speed also the impact properties, probed in tensile impact test, are improved. The impact resistance increases from about 50kJ/m2 in plain PLA to well above 80kJ/m2 for 80:20 PLA/aPHB blend. EVALUATION OF AN APPLICABILITY OF GFRP LAMINATE PANELS REINFORCED WITH BRAIDED PREFORMS AND MANUFACTURED BY RTM Summary. The paper presents the results of 3-point bending tests conducted on composite laminates, manufactured via RTM method, reinforced with the glass fibre preforms made by flattening of braided sleeves. The analysis of changes in mechanical properties with the changes in reinforcing strands angle was done. It was found that glass-fibre braided structures are valuable reinforcing material for PMC laminate panels. The achieved level of flexural strength and modulus qualifies the flattened-braided laminates as equivalent to “classic” laminates reinforced with woven structures. Moreover, the flattened-braided laminates show much higher deformability, which enables easier placement into the moulds – it is especially important by manufacturing of round-shaped or shape-complicated elements. The paper is a initial part for further investigations over application of braiding technique in the technology of PMC composite laminates. PACKAGING POLYLACTIDE FILMS MODIFIED WITH BLOCK COPOLYMERS OF ETHYLENE GLYCOL AND PROPYLENE GLYCOL FOR THERMOFORMING Summary. Polylactide (PLA) is a biodegradable polyester, which can be produced from annually renewable resources. Because of relatively high Tg of 55-60 °C, PLA is stiff and brittle at room conditions, which limits its applications demanding high toughness and drawability. For improvement of drawability blending with other polymers is used. Block copolymers of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol (PEG-b-PPG-b-PEG) appear to be efficient modifiers for PLA, able to improve its mechanical performance [1]. Block copolymers are partially miscible with PLA but also they undergo phase separation. Partial miscibility causes slight decrease of glass transition and separated inclusion of copolymers induce easier plastic deformation of PLA significantly improving their properties. The present study is focused on modification of PLA with block copolymers of ethylene glycol and propylene glycol with higher molar mass, which leads to blends with only partial miscibility and phase separation. The process of modification of PLA with the use of twin screw corrotating extruder was elaborated. Several blends with various kinds of PLA were obtained that can be deform to 100-200% and demonstrating several folds increase of tensile impact strength. A process of film extrusion of PLA blends with PEG and PPG copolymers was also elaborated. The mechanical properties of the films were characterized and several successful attempts of thermoforming were performed. Joanna BARTUSIK, Zbigniew BARTCZAK Center of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, Lodz, Poland SHEAR-INDUCED CRYSTALLIZATION OF HDPE/CACO3 BLENDS Summary. Semi-crystalline commodity polymers, such as HDPE, are widely used for production of many goods. Therefore, it is important to understand mechanisms responsible for their behavior in terms of processing including extensive shear forces present at various processing conditions. In recent years, high density polyethylene modified by mineral filler (CaCO3) have drawn increasing attention in both industrial and academic fields because of its better mechanical and thermal properties compared to the plain polymer. It was postulated that toughness enhancement of semi-crystalline polymers which were modified with stiff mineral particles is related to the local orientation of lamellae near the matrix – particle interface [1,2]. That orientation is due to altered kinetics of crystallization near the interface, resulting in growth of lamellae oriented preferentially edge-on with respect to the interface. At a certain concentration of a particulate modifier, the oriented layers around particles get into contact and form a continuous phase of the reduced plastic resistance. As a result, the material is ready to extensive plastic deformation within matrix ligaments between filler particles. This process can dissipate substantial amount of energy upon impact and the material becomes very tough. Another explanation of the preferred local orientation of lamellae observed in filled systems was proposed by Meijer at al [3], who suggested that such a preferred orientation is a result of crystallization in the matrix ligaments between filler particles under strong shear stresses which frequently are present during sample preparation. The reported study deals with an influence of the shear applied to the molten HDPE and HDPE modified with mineral filler (CaCO3) on the crystallization process and resulting morphology and orientation of PE crystals. Samples of HDPE/CaCO3 blends were prepared by melt-mixing in the Brabender® mixer. Thin samples were melted and subjected to the shear pulse (shear rate up to 20s-1, time of the pulse 0-20s) prior to isothermal crystallization (126-128oC) in a microscopic shear stage. The structure, morphology and thermal properties of obtained samples were studied with several techniques, including DSC, SEM, WAXS and SAXS. The obtained results demonstrated a deep influence of the shear applied to the melt on crystallization process, morphology and properties of both plain HDPE and HDPE modified with CaCO3. The shear results in much faster crystallization than in static conditions and in significant orientation of the formed crystalline phase of PE. While the crystallization following shear pulse is faster in filled systems than in plain PE the degree of orientation of polymer crystals is usually lower in composites than in plain HDPE processed at the same conditions. ASSESSMENT OF THE SELECTED PARAMETERS CHARACTERIZING THE MOULDING PROCESS OF POLYAMIDE ON PNEUMATIC PISTON INJECTIONS ON STRENGHT PROPERTIES Summary. In the prosthetic technique, simple injection pistons are applied for making parts of dental prosthesis. Changes of some parameters throughout the injection process are possibile, thanks to which the optimization of the process with reference to mechanical properties of compacts is also possible. The properties of materials used for purposes of prosthetic quoted by manufacturers, were received on the moulders made with the use of screw injection molding machines in compliance with the required standards. These properties might vary significantly from those received on injection piston. In the article, we present the results of the strength tests of Poliamid 6 samples injected on a injection piston applied in the dental prosthetic. During the injection process the temperature and pressure were subjected to changes. The impact of assumed parameters on the strength properties of the samples was proved. This paper presents the results of the detection of defects in polyethylene using ultrasonic methods. For research purposes used samples from high density polyethylene with artificially made defects in the form of holes. Some defects of different sizes has been placed at the same distance from the surface of the test. The rest of defects, which have identical diameters, are arranged uniformly on the cross-section of the sample. Samples prepared in this way have been investigated on the ultrasonic flaw detector and the results have been compared. THE IMPACT OF THE DEGREE OF FILTRATION ON THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF THREE-LAYER FILM OF PET Summary. In the paper we characterize the filtration process of the polymer materials. We discuss the pros and cons of the filtration process, which is applied during the recycling of thermoplastic polymer materials. We also present the process of the feedstock recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).Within the frame of the research the samples of film produced with the use of extruder with three sets of filtration sieves were prepared. The role of the sieves is the purification of the melted material. After the completion of the filtration, the samples of the film were taken. They were corresponding to the individual sets of nets were, which were subjected to the examination of the strength properties.
