S
ometimes our prayer
is a projection of our
own self-hatred rather than a communication
with God. For instance,
Abraham began interceding for Sodom and Gomorrah by saying: “See
how I am presuming to
speak to my Lord, though
I am but dust and ashes!”
(Gn 18:27) Later in his
prayer, Abraham begged
God not to become impatient (Gn 18:30) or angry
(Gn 18:32) with him, as
if God could be impatient
or angry. Abraham projected his own problems
onto God. Eventually,
Abraham quit interceding
for Sodom and Gomorrah. He may have thought
these cities didn’t deserve
to be saved or that God
wouldn’t save them, although God had repeatedly said He would. Abraham was impatient with
God’s timing.
When we pray, may we
not project our self-hatred, problems, and limitations onto God. Rather,
may we let God project
His love, holiness, and
power onto us. We pray
not in order to change
God but to allow Him to
change us. Praying is not
God-changing; rather, it
is “us-changing,” which
makes it life-changing.
“Lord, teach us to pray”
(Lk 11:1).

The Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, has announced the appointment of a new Director of the
Catholic Parliamentary Office. Archbishop Philip
Tartaglia, President of the Bishops’ Conference
offered congratulations to Anthony Horan who
will direct the work of the Catholic Parliamentary
Office from 25 July 2016.
Archbishop Tartaglia said: “I congratulate
Anthony on his appointment as Director of the
Catholic Parliamentary Office. Together with all
the bishops I look forward to working with him
in future as he represents the Church in the political sphere. Anthony’s demonstrable knowledge
of and commitment to his Catholic faith will be
a tremendous asset to the Catholic Parliamentary
Office. I wish him every success in his new post.”
Anthony Horan commented: “I am honoured
to have been appointed Director of the Catholic
Parliamentary Office of the Bishops’ Conference
of Scotland. I look forward to engaging with Scotland’s parliamentarians and the political system,

Modlitwa jak pocałunek
Pomyśl
o
tej
przypowieści: pies i koń
zostali
przyjaciółmi.
Pies odkładał dla konia
najlepsze kości, koń zaś
wybierał najsmaczniejsze siano. Każdy chciał
tego, co najlepsze, nie
zastanawiając się, czego
drugi przyjaciel pragnie tak naprawdę! Ani
pierwszy, ani drugi nie
był nigdy nasycony. Bóg
pragnie od ciebie też
pocałunków miłości, a
są nimi twoje modlitwy.
Modlitwa to pocałunek
duszy
składany
na
Bożym Sercu. Módl
się tak, jakbyś obdarzał
Go pocałunkami. Bóg
kocha być kochanym.
Nie potrzebuje siana
słów, tylko takich słów,
które są ucałowaniem.
Nie potrzebuje kości
czy ochłapów, lecz
oddania się w słowach
całej duszy. Bonhoeffer mawiał: „oddajemy się na modlitwie
gawędzeniu ze samym
sobą”. Tak, nasza modlitwa musi być rzuceniem się na szyję Ojcu nieba, a nie narzekaniem na
siebie do siebie samego.
Jednym z największych
wykrzywień
obrazu
Boga jest wyobrażenie,
że jest On „spełniaczem”
potrzeb,
użytecznym
w
chwilach
naszej
bezradności. Modlitwa
staje się wtedy używanie
Boga. Prosimy go i
prosimy, by tylko nas
zaspokajał, w ogóle nie
domyślając się, że On
sam nas pragnie. Możesz
modlić się wspaniale, z
pragnieniem obdarzenia Boga tym, czego On
cicho pragnie. Kiedy
uda ci się to uczynić,
poczujesz szczęście, bo
więcej szczęścia jest w
dawaniu niż w braniu.
W czasach, w których
przyszło
nam
żyć,
ludzie w większości są
zaprzedani użyteczności
i
interesowności.
Zadaniem chrześcijanina
jest stworzenie w sobie
duchowego terytorium,
w którym jest miejsce
dla wspaniałomyślności
i
bezinteresowności.
Dlaczego dziś wielu
ludzi się nie modli?
Ponieważ jest to czas
dla nich „bezużyteczny”,
ponieważ wiele modlitw wcale nie jest w
schemacie: ”stoliczku,
nakryj się”. Bóg ofiaruje wieczność, gdy
ofiaruję Mu swój czas.
Czas, w którym o nic mi
nie chodzi i nic nie jest
ważniejsze niż przebywanie z Nim. Mówiąc
o miłowaniu Boga, nie
można tego zrozumieć
jako sentymentalnego
apelu w którym doznajemy
przyjemności.
Uczuciowość w modlitwie jest poddawana
gruntownemu oczyszczeniu. Jakże często
bowiem
obdarzając
kogoś miłością, więcej
szukamy dla siebie, niż
chcemy ofiarować. Jeśli
chcemy, by modlitwa
była cała dla Niego, przygotowujemy się na
to, że nic nam nie zostanie w niej samej. To
może być przykre, ale
też piękne. Jeśli chcemy,
by On nas odczuwał,
wiedząc, że tego pragnie,
to przygotowujemy się
na to, że nic w modlitwie
nie poczujemy. Święta
Teresa z Avila mówiła:
„To zrozumiałe, że słabe
kobietki podobne do
mnie, potrzebują uczucia w modlitwie, lecz
oburzam się, widząc
dojrzałych
mężczyzn,
którzy modlą się tylko
wtedy, gdy mają na to

Friends of Bydgoszcz
In just over two weeks,
on Monday 25th July, 4
members of Friends of
Perth will be visiting
us for 4 days. We have
a very busy few days,
with a visit to Edinburgh
on the Tuesday and
Falkland Palace on the
Wednesday. On Thursday we extend a warm
welcome to all members
of “Friends of Bydgoszcz”, who would wish
to join us for all or part
of the day. The Provost,
Liz Grant, will meet our
guests at the Blackwatch
Regimental Museum at 2
pm. We will then tour the
exhibitions and Poppy
display before heading
down to Perth Museum
for 5 pm where there
will be a special exhibition of the Polish soldiers
and their contribution to
Perth and surrounding
area during World War
II. The day will conclude
with a meal in a friendly
atmosphere in a local res-
taurant. Please let either
Valerie Henderson, our
secretary or Sid Grant,
know by Monday 25th
July, if you wish to join
us in order that we can
confirm numbers for catering.
The second item we
wish to mention is a traditional Polish Christmas
Eve celebration, a “Wigilia”. This is a new venture for us and we hope
that as many of you as
possible will attend and
bring your family and
friends. This will be held
on Friday 2nd December at the Lovat Hotel in
Perth starting at 7 pm.
In Poland, Christmas
Eve is a day first of fasting, then of feasting.
The Wigilia feast begins
at the appearance of the
first star. There is no red
meat served but fish. The
supper, includes many
traditional dishes and
desserts.
According to tradition,
bits of hay are spread beneath the tablecloth as a
reminder that Christ was
born in a manger. The
supper begins with the
breaking of the opłatek.
Everyone at the table
breaks off a piece and
eats it as a symbol of
their unity with Christ.
The evening will include a fixed six course
menu. Please book early

Scottish Bishops’
statement on
nuclear weapons
The Bishops of Scotland have for a long time
pointed out the immorality of the use of strategic
nuclear weapons due to the indiscriminate destruc- tion of innocent human life that their use
would cause.
The renewal of Trident is questioned not just
by those concerned with the morality of nuclear
weap- ons themselves but also by those concerned about the use of scarce nancial resources.
Lives are being lost now because money that
could be spent on the needy and the poor is tied
up in nuclear arsenals. We endorse the words of
Pope Francis: “Spending on nuclear weapons
squanders the wealth of nations”.
The United Kingdom, permanent member of
the UN Security Council and declared nuclear
power, signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty in 1968. That treaty binds signatories
who do not have nuclear weapons not to acquire
them, but it also binds those who do have nuclear weapons to work towards the disposing
and elimination of all nuclear weapons. Britain
should take more decisive and courageous steps
to revive that aspect of the treaty and not seek to
prolong the status quo.
JUSTICE
and PEACE
The Christian lives under the interior law of liberty,
which is a permanent call to turn away from selfsufficiency to confidence in God and from concern
for self to sincere love of neighbour. Thus takes place
genuine liberation and the gift of oneself for the freedom of others.
