CCHHRRIISSTTIIAANN FFAACCUULLTTYY FFOORRUUMM PROGRAM COMMITTEE IInnvviitteess kkiinnddllyy ttoo tthhee ssiixxtthh ccoonnffeerreennccee ffrroom m tthhee sseerriieess Chairman: Dr. hab. Dariusz Badura SSCCIIEENNCCEE –– EETTHHIICCSS –– FFAAIITTHH The goal of the Science-Ethics-Faith conferences is to exchange ideas concerning relationships between science, ethics and faith. The last conference (2013) focused on the possibilities and limitations of science, and the previous one (2011) – on the dignity of man. The subject of the upcoming conference is SCIENCE AND FAITH – CHALLENGES OF THE FUTURE CONFERENCE MOTTO: God said: fill the earth and subdue it. (Genesis 1:28) The dynamic development of science strongly influences the perception of the surrounding world and its understanding. Progress and achievements in science and technology may cause excessive faith in the unlimited possibilities of mankind. The consequent cultural changes lead to rejection of the traditional ethical principles. The Christian vision of reality contains both unchangeable moral values as well as the eschatological vision of the future, including the eternal destiny of an individual man and the destination of the whole world. This creates the tension between hope built on the basis of science - and hope based on the revelation of faith. May these perspectives - or even should they – be reconciled? Are they doomed to inevitable conflict? What role the system of higher education may play in this dilemma? The subject of this conference is therefore a continuation of the previous one - with a particular stress on the ethical problems related to the development of modern science and technology as well as the defense of life and human dignity. The following topics may be addressed in the conference presentations: 1. The goals of science and higher education a. science from the philosophy perspective b. goals of particular sciences c. goals of technical sciences; technological progress in the context of human identity and dignity d. development and formation of the scientists and university teachers e. future of university education 2. Ethical challenges a. ethical problems in the context of scientific progress b. protection of human life and dignity c. professional ethics and the conscience clause d. education and formation of the young generation e. contemporary and future social trends and their consequences 3.
