W zdaniu przymiotnik określa rzeczownik natomiast zaimek zastępuje rzeczownik. Tak więc przymiotnik dzierżawczy występuje przed rzeczownikiem, a zaimek dzierżawczy zamiast rzeczownika. Przykłady: This is my book. – To jest moja książka. “My” występuje przed rzeczownikiem “book” spełnia więc funkcję przymiotnika (określającego rzeczownik). This book is mine. – Ta książka jest moja. ”Mine” występuje na końcu zdania nie ma po nim rzeczownika, spełnia więc funkcję zaimka (zastępującego rzeczownik). This isn’t your car. That car is yours.
