The Judas Heresy in (Post)Modern Culture: A Case Study The monograph entitled The Judas Heresy in (Post)Modern Culture: A Case Study crosses the boundary between culture-oriented literary studies and the history of ideas. The book adopts a post-secular perspective to charter the functioning of the Judeo-Christian tradition in the (post)modern era. It focuses on literary texts that bear witness to their spiritual yearnings that were current at the time of their composition. The Judas Heresy is a multidimensional case study that helps to shed a new light on the shape and direction of the cultural shift occurring in the twentieth century. The monograph focuses on the strategies of transformation of Biblical motifs in Bulgarian culture. The choice of material is unique for a two reasons: firstly, due to the fact that Bulgaria is located on the peripheries of Europe, its culture benefits from the cultural transfer from the West in a somewhat mediated or derivative way, but by the same token, Bulgarian literature also offers a valuable perspective of an outsider looking in, and perspicuously describes phenomena that are more difficult to see from the privileged central position. Secondly, the context of Bulgaria’s turbulent twentieth-century history makes the analysis of the literary material from the period truly compelling. The analyses of different portrayals of the Biblical character of Judas constitute the core of the argument. The story of Judas, treated by earlier writers and artists as straightforward, gained new currency and new depth and complexity after the Modernist breakthrough. Its popularity endured throughout the twentieth century, and increased at the turn of the twenty-first century. It seems that the figure of Judas might be an especially well-chosen foil for the (post)modern condition. After losing the existential certitude, the (post)modern man is searching for alternative ways to survive in the state of alienation. In the European culture there are three alternative worldviews, treated as cognitive paradigms, that compete for the role of hermeneutic mainstay: the JudeoChristian, the Gnostic and the rationalist. The monograph traces the writers’ axiological anxieties and their susceptibility to intellectual and religious trends that had fundamental importance for the shaping of modern culture. “The Bulgarian case” can be seen therefore as an apt illustration of a more general and widespread tendency. The monograph’s significance is broader than just an analysis of one aspect of Bulgarian literature and culture: the study also sheds light on the process of transfer of ideas that is a crucial element of Western culture and religious thought. As a result, the monograph not only fills up a lacuna in Bulgarian literature studies, but also promises to be an important contribution to the ongoing wider debate in modern-day humanities.
