We sing these words as our Psalm response this weekend. Christ is risen! Christ is ascending to the Father! Christ will send the Holy Spirit! Christ will come again! After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples many times. He knew there were things they still didn’t understand. They would have to understand clearly that he had risen from the dead, that the days of darkness and death were replaced by light and life. He knew they were having a hard time understanding some of the Scriptures. He opened their minds to that understanding as well. The time finally came when He had to trust that He had given them enough and then ascend again to the Father. Many of us have children. We do our best to teach them and protect them. We strive to show them by example what it means to live a good and honest Christian life. There are still things they don’t understand. We try to teach them. We know that there will come a time for them to leave our house and make it in the world on their own. So we do our very best to prepare them. We know that if we cling to them, support them, make decisions for them and continue to get them out of trouble that they won’t have much of a chance of succeeding in the world. The most loving thing we can do is to let go. Of course we’ll be there for them always, to give advice when it is asked of us, to provide emotional support and love. And we’ll have a glorious feeling of fulfillment as they succeed! Jesus too, knew that the time would come for Him to trust that what He had given the disciples was enough. After He ascended to heaven, they were tempted to freeze in that moment. “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?” It didn’t take them long to understand that Jesus’ mission was becoming their own mission. Jesus said to His disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” They came to understand that what they had been given would be enough. They could begin to feel the Lord working through them. “...they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the Word through accompanying signs.” They were promised the Holy Spirit as well. Their fear would be wiped away. They would know what was truly important. They would devote themselves completely to things that would last forever. Their witness would be remarkable to those who saw their lives and listened to their words. The Church would begin to grow and thrive because the purity of their lives and their message. And their mission fails us. We too are called to preach the good news to the end of the earth. This can be a good weekend for us to take stock of how well we can do that. Do we devote ourselves to things that will last forever? Would others put faith in the Church because of what they hear us say and how they see us live our lives? Are we willing to speak the work of God and give God credit for what He has done in our lives? Do we sometimes stand and “look into the sky” rather than busying ourselves with God’s work? Are we “too busy” to do God’s work? As God’s people we too await the consolation and power of the Holy Spirit. This week we can take stock of where we are and get ready to receive those gifts of the Holy Spirit that can raise us to a whole new level of living our faith. ©MMIX Father Pat Umberger, www.frpat.com TRZEBA IŚĆ DALEJ Liturgia Słowa dzisiejszej niedzieli nawiązuje bardzo wyraźnie do Wniebowstąpienia, a równocześnie wybiega do Uroczystości Zesłania Ducha Świętego. Sytuacja każdego z nas jest dalszym ciągiem sytuacji młodego Kościoła z czasów Chrystusa, kiedy On szedł do Ojca. Mamy ciągle świadczyć o Chrystusie—o tym, któregośmy nie widzieli, nie słyszeli, nie dotykali bezpośrednio. Mamy świadczyć, jakbyśmy Go widzieli, dotykali, rozmawiali z Nim. Nie wolno nam zapominać, że ON jest, że umęczony i zmartwychwstały, że ON żyje! ON chce nieustannie wstępować pomiędzy nas i szuka serc, w których byłaby miłość. ON czeka na ludzi, którzy umieją przyjąć Ducha Świętego i pozwalają przypominać sobie wszystko, cokolwiek ON powiedział, w niczym nie fałszując Jego zbawczej prawdy. ON szuka serc, które mają odwagę dochować wierności słowem i życiem, czynem i w prawdzie. -ks. Page Four May 24, 2009 Parking Lot Improvement Over the years, the railing at the south end of the main parking lot had rusted away, leaving a dangerous gap at the drop down to the south parking lot. Within the past couple weeks, a new wrought iron fence was installed for safety and improved appearance. In the coming weeks, the Parish Pastoral Council will be discussing other pressing safety and security issues such as a way to stop the constant flow of bicycles, skateboards, people with dogs and teenagers using the path between the church and school building as a shortcut to the park. Also at issue is a way of stopping vehicles from using our main parking lot as an often high speed shortcut from Addison to Sayre and vise versa. Several of our parishioners have already had close calls while walking in the parking lot from their cars to the church and parish meetings. You will be kept advised on any of these safety and security improvements because they are made possible by your generous support of St. Priscilla Church. The railing which can be seen on the pictures was built and installed by Joseph Palenica and our parishioner, Marian Burak. Thank you to these gentlemen for their talent and time devoted to St. Priscilla to help improve our parish grounds! God Bless You and your families! It seems that he had his fun driving his car in spirals on the lawn ripping it up. The only reason he was apprehended was that the engine of his car broke down during his antics. St. Priscilla Parish, its buildings and properties belong to all of us. If you ever see any vandalism being done to our parish properties or suspicious activity, please do not hesitate. Please call the police in my name immediately. Having a park next to us is a blessing and a curse. While it is a beautiful backdrop for our parish buildings in both the summer and winter, it is a magnet for unsavory characters who have little respect for church property. With the south end of our property so isolated, especially at night we must be ever more vigilant. -Fr.
