English Lenten Retreat - February 23-28, 2013
On February 23, 2013 we welcome Fr. Tuan Pham, C.Ss.R and Fr.
John P. Fahey Guerra, C.Ss.R who will be conducting the English
Lenten Retreat.
Fr. Tuan is Vietnamese he grew up in Idaho.
On June 26 he will celebrate his 14th year of
priesthood. He has been in various parishes
from Whittier, CA to Minneapolis, MN to Liberal, KS to Houston, TX. He has had the
opportunity to be in Mexico for 2 years and
so he is tri-lingual! He is currently in formation ministry here in Chicago with Fr. John .
They are working with 8 students, who are
attending the Catholic Theological Union on the south side of Chicago. The students are on different levels of formation.
Fr. John is a Redemptorist priest of the Denver Province. He took
his vows in the Congregation on June 26, 1992,
and was ordained a priest in 1996. He has
served as an associate pastor at the former
Redemptorist parish in Denver. He has
preached missions, and has served as director
of Hispanic ministry in Dodge City, Kansas. He
is presently the co-director of formation along
with Fr. Tuan at Seelos House in Chicago.
Flea Market
March 9-10, 2013
We will be having a Flea Market on Saturday, March
9th, and Sunday, March 10th at the Social Center. If
anyone has any new or used items that they would
like to donate, please bring them to the rectory. If you
would like to donate something but cannot bring it to
the rectory, please call and we will arrange for someone to pick up
your donation.
If anyone is interested in renting space at the Flea Market, please
contact the secretary at 708-652-0948 for a vendor form.
More information will be available in future bulletins.
Lent services schedule for February 1822 will be cancel, with the exception of
the Polish Way of the Cross at 7:00 PM
on Friday, February 22. Please note
that ONLY the 8AM Mass on February

Luke 4:1-13
Pope Benedict XVI has announced his resignation. Here is the full
text of his statement from the Vatican:
Background on the Gospel Reading
In each of the three Synoptic Gospels, after his baptism, Jesus is
reported to have spent forty days in the desert, fasting and praying.
In Luke and in Matthew, the devil presents three temptations to Jesus. The devil tempts Jesus to use his power to appease his hunger,
he offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will worship
him, and he tempts Jesus to put God's promise of protection to the
test. In each case, Jesus resists, citing words from Scripture to rebuke the devil's temptation.
Each temptation that Jesus faces offers insight into the spirituality we
hope to develop as we keep the forty days of the Season of Lent. We
can trust God to provide for our material needs. We worship God
because God alone has dominion over us and our world. We can
trust God to be faithful to his promises. Jesus' rejection of the devil's
temptations shows that he will not put God to the test. Grounding
himself on the Word and authority of Scripture, Jesus rebukes the
devil by his confidence in God's protection and faithfulness.
This Gospel highlights for us one of the central themes of the Season
of Lent. We are dependent upon God for all that we have and all that
we are. Anything that leads us to reject this dependency or to distrust
its sufficiency, is a temptation from the devil.
Luke ends his report of Jesus' temptation in the desert by noting that
the devil departs for a time. The implication is that the devil will return. Jesus knows that he will be tempted again in the Garden of
Gethsemane. The depth of Jesus' trust in God is shown most fully
when Jesus rejects the temptation to turn away from the task God
has given to him. Jesus' final rebuke of the devil is his sacrifice on
the Cross.
Jesus' responses to the temptations of the devil teach us how we can
respond to temptation. As we start our journey through Lent, this
Sunday's Gospel calls us to adopt the same confidence that Jesus
had in the face of temptation: God's word alone will suffice, God's
promise of protection can be trusted, and God alone is God.
Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only
for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for
the life of the Church.
After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty
that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are
no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the
Petrine ministry.
I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and
deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering.
However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and
shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to
steer the boat of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength
of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few
months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.
For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full
freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome,
Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19
April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00
hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a
Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked
by those whose competence it is.
Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work
with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for
all my defects.
And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme
Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so
that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude,
in electing a new Supreme Pontiff.
With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church
of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.
In the desert, Jesus is tempted by the devil.

on the announced resignation of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI
Pope Benedict XVI has, in all circumstances, placed the will of God
for the good of the Church before every other consideration. That
same resoluteness of purpose speaks in his statement announcing
his resignation from the Chair of Peter.
He has taught with clarity and charity what God has revealed to the
world in Christ; he has handed on the apostolic faith; he has loved all
of God’s people with all his heart. He has now shown great courage
in deciding, after prayer and soul-searching, to resign his office at the
end of this month.
With the gratitude of sons and daughters in our hearts, we ask the
Lord to bless him and give him strength, as we begin to pray now for
the one who will succeed him as Bishop of Rome, Successor of Peter and Vicar of Christ.

llevó al desierto. Allí estuvo cuarenta días, y el diablo le puso a prueba. No comió nada durante aquellos días, y después sintió hambre. El
diablo le dijo: Si de veras eres Hijo de Dios, ordena a esta piedra que
se convierta en pan.
Jesús le contestó: La Escritura dice: "No sólo de pan vivirá el hombre."
Luego el diablo le llevó a un lugar alto y, mostrándole en un momento
todos los países del mundo, le dijo: Yo te daré todo este poder y la
grandeza de los países. Porque yo lo he recibido, y lo daré a quien
quiera dárselo. Si te arrodillas y me adoras, todo será tuyo.
Jesús le contestó: La Escritura dice: "Adora al Señor tu Dios, y sírvele
sólo a él."
Después el diablo le llevó a la ciudad de Jerusalén, le subió al alero
del templo y le dijo: Si de veras eres Hijo de Dios, tírate abajo, porque
la Escritura dice: "Dios mandará a sus ángeles que te cuiden y protejan. Te levantarán con sus manos para que no tropieces con piedra
alguna."
Jesús le contestó: También dice la Escritura: "No pongas a prueba al
Señor tu Dios."
Cuando ya el diablo no encontró otra forma de poner a prueba a Jesús, se alejó de él por algún tiempo.

Declaración del papa Benedicto XVI
"Queridísimos hermanos,
Os he convocado a este Consistorio, no sólo para
las tres causas de canonización, sino también para
comunicaros una decisión de gran importancia para
la vida de la Iglesia.
Después de haber examinado ante Dios reiteradamente mi conciencia, he llegado a la certeza de que, por la edad
avanzada, ya no tengo fuerzas para ejercer adecuadamente el ministerio petrino. Soy muy consciente de que este ministerio, por su naturaleza espiritual, debe ser llevado a cabo no únicamente con obras y
palabras, sino también y en no menor grado sufriendo y rezando.
Sin embargo, en el mundo de hoy, sujeto a rápidas transformaciones
y sacudido por cuestiones de gran relieve para la vida de la fe, para
gobernar la barca de San Pedro y anunciar el Evangelio, es necesario también el vigor tanto del cuerpo como del espíritu, vigor que, en
los últimos meses, ha disminuido en mí de tal forma que he de reconocer mi incapacidad para ejercer bien el ministerio que me fue encomendado.
Por esto, siendo muy consciente de la seriedad de este acto, con
plena libertad, declaro que renuncio al ministerio de Obispo de Roma,
Sucesor de San Pedro, que me fue confiado por medio de los Cardenales el 19 de abril de 2005, de forma que, desde el 28 de febrero de
2013, a las 20.00 horas, la sede de Roma, la sede de San Pedro,
quedará vacante y deberá ser convocado, por medio de quien tiene
competencias, el cónclave para la elección del nuevo Sumo Pontífice.
Queridísimos hermanos, os doy las gracias de corazón por todo el
amor y el trabajo con que habéis llevado junto a mí el peso de mi
ministerio, y pido perdón por todos mis defectos.
Ahora, confiamos la Iglesia al cuidado de su Sumo Pastor, Nuestro
Señor Jesucristo, y suplicamos a María, su Santa Madre, que asista
con su materna bondad a los Padres Cardenales al elegir el nuevo
Sumo Pontífice.
Por lo que a mi respecta, también en el futuro, quisiera servir de todo
corazón a la Santa Iglesia de Dios con una vida dedicada a la plegaria.

sobre la anunciada renuncia de Su Santidad, Papa Benedicto XVI
En todas circunstancias, el Papa Benedicto XVI ha puesto la voluntad de Dios por el bien de la Iglesia, antes que cualquier otra consideración. Esa misma determinación de propósito se aprecia en su
declaración, en la que anuncia que dimite a la Silla de Pedro.
Él ha enseñado con claridad y misericordia lo que Dios ha revelado
al mundo en Cristo; él ha conducido la fe apostólica; él ha amado a
toda la gente de Dios con todo su corazón. Ahora, él ha mostrado
un gran valor al decidir, después de mucha oración y examen de
conciencia, renunciar a su oficina al final de este mes.
Con la gratitud de hijos e hijas en nuestros corazones, pedimos al
Señor que lo bendiga y le dé fortaleza, en tanto comenzamos a orar

czterdzieści dni przebywał w Duchu na pustyni, gdzie był kuszony
przez diabła. Nic w owe dni nie jadł, a po ich upływie odczuł głód.
Rzekł Mu wtedy diabeł: Jeśli jesteś Synem Bożym, powiedz temu
kamieniowi, żeby się stał chlebem. Odpowiedział mu Jezus: Napisane jest: Nie samym chlebem żyje człowiek. Wówczas wyprowadził
Go w górę, pokazał Mu w jednej chwili wszystkie królestwa świata i
rzekł diabeł do Niego: Tobie dam potęgę i wspaniałość tego wszystkiego, bo mnie są poddane i mogę je odstąpić, komu chcę. Jeśli więc
upadniesz i oddasz mi pokłon, wszystko będzie Twoje. Lecz Jezus
mu odrzekł: Napisane jest: Panu, Bogu swemu, będziesz oddawał
pokłon i Jemu samemu służyć będziesz. Zaprowadził Go też do Jerozolimy, postawił na narożniku świątyni i rzekł do Niego: Jeśli jesteś
Synem Bożym, rzuć się stąd w dół! Jest bowiem napisane: Aniołom
swoim rozkaże o Tobie, żeby Cię strzegli, i na rękach nosić Cię będą, byś przypadkiem nie uraził swej nogi o kamień. Lecz Jezus mu
odparł: Powiedziano: Nie będziesz wystawiał na próbę Pana, Boga
swego. Gdy diabeł dokończył całego kuszenia, odstąpił od Niego aż
do czasu.

Najdrożsi Bracia,
zawezwałem was na ten
Konsystorz nie tylko z
powodu trzech kanonizacji, ale także, aby zakomunikować wam decyzję
o wielkiej wadze dla życia Kościoła. Rozważywszy po wielokroć rzecz w sumieniu przed Bogiem, zyskałem pewność, że z
powodu podeszłego wieku moje siły nie są już wystarczające,
aby w sposób należyty sprawować posługę Piotrową. Jestem
w pełni świadom, że ta posługa, w jej duchowej istocie powinna być spełniana nie tylko przez czyny i słowa, ale w nie
mniejszym stopniu także przez cierpienie i modlitwę. Tym
niemniej, aby kierować łodzią św. Piotra i głosić Ewangelię w
dzisiejszym świecie, podlegającym szybkim przemianom i
wzburzanym przez kwestie o wielkim znaczeniu dla życia
wiary, niezbędna jest siła zarówno ciała, jak i ducha, która w
ostatnich miesiącach osłabła we mnie na tyle, że muszę uznać
moją niezdolność do dobrego wykonywania powierzonej mi
posługi. Dlatego, w pełni świadom powagi tego aktu, z pełną
wolnością, oświadczam, że rezygnuję z posługi Biskupa Rzymu, Następcy Piotra, powierzonej mi przez Kardynałów 19
kwietnia 2005 roku, tak, że od 28 lutego 2013 roku, od godziny 20.00, rzymska stolica, Stolica św. Piotra, będzie zwolniona (sede vacante) i będzie konieczne, aby ci, którzy do tego
posiadają kompetencje, zwołali Konklawe dla wyboru nowego
Papieża.
Najdrożsi Bracia, dziękuję wam ze szczerego serca za całą
miłość i pracę, przez którą nieśliście ze mną ciężar mojej posługi, i proszę o wybaczenie wszelkich moich niedoskonałości. Teraz zawierzamy Kościół święty opiece Najwyższego
Pasterza, naszego Pana Jezusa Chrystusa, i błagamy Jego najświętszą Matkę Maryję, aby wspomagała swoją matczyną
dobrocią Ojców Kardynałów w wyborze nowego Papieża.
Jeśli o mnie chodzi, również w przyszłości będę chciał służyć
całym sercem, całym oddanym modlitwie życiem, świętemu
Kościołowi Bożemu.
