A brief overview of our Lenten Mission March 18-22, 2004 •Morning Sessions: “Learning to Pray Better with the Liturgy” Three sessions on connecting liturgical prayer to our personal and devotional prayer life. We will take a look at how liturgical prayer expresses our basic relations with God, and how it can be used to enhance our prayer life. •Evening Sessions: “Spirituality, Liturgy and Catholic Life” Three sessions will reflect on the root and source of our faith. We will examine how God relates to us, and how our response to God is expressed in the liturgy, in our spiritual outlook on life, and in the values we live as Catholics •Saturday Morning: “Liturgical Ministry: Theology in Practice” After a brief overview of the theological dimensions of liturgy, we will reflect on how various liturgical ministries fit into and flow out of that spiritual vision. Concrete examples will be used to illustrate the role of various liturgical ministries in the life of a parish community. All Lectors, Musicians and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist should plan to attend. Anyone not a member of any of these ministries who is thinking about becoming involved in liturgical ministry is especially invited and welcome to attend. READINGS FOR THE WEEK The sanctuary lamps this week are lit for: ^Seraphine & Joseph Lewandowski ^Alex Ladisa Our Blessed Lord has called home our parishioners Stanley C. Abbot Marcel was born in Fremont Nebraska. He entered the monastic profession at Conception Abbey in Conception Missouri where he was ordained to the priesthood. Abbot Marcel was elected abbot of Conception Abbey in April 1993. Three years later, on September 18, 1996, he was elected abbot primate . Earlier he worked as a professor at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute at the Benedictine College of St. Anselm in Rome, where he’d received a doctorate in sacred theology in 1977. He received a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music in 1971. Abbot Marcel resigned as abbot primate of the Benedictine Confederation September 4, 2000 midway through his eight-year term due to health concerns, but he continues to teach Liturgical Theology at Conception Seminary and gives lectures and retreats. We welcome Abbot Marcel Rooney. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish Sunday, March 6-7, 2004: Envelopes: $ 9,733.80 Loose Cash: $ 3,686.17 TOTAL DONATIONS: $13,419.97 Amount over/(under) weekly budget: ($1,580.03)) Thank you for your support of St. Ferdinand Parish. In addition, and on behalf of the greater Church of Chicago, thank you for your support of the Annual Catholic Campaign either through your donations in the second collection last weekend or through your pledges and gifts by mail to the Pastoral Center. Your generosity to the Archdiocese helps to fund many ministries and services throughout Cook and Lake counties. Finally, we are grateful to our parishioners who attended the Parish Mission in the Polish language last weekend and who contributed to offset the expenses of the mission, the stipend for our Mission Director, Fr. Jaros³aw Jeczen, and the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland. We hope that all of our parishioners will also take full advantage of our upcoming Parish Mission in the English language which starts this Thursday. All of the liturgies and offerings of our Lenten Mission are detailed in today’s bulletin. Through these two special times of renewal and grace, may God bring each of us closer to our Savior, Jesus Christ. Daniel P. Costigan, Parish Business Manager Page Three As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. Fresh fruit, nuts, mints, candies, etc. are also a welcome addition. See you there! There will be a free will offering. All proceeds will go to the poor. MERCY Attention: We need your help! God is mercy. That seems to be the main message of the reading from Exodus. God has seen the suffering of the Israelites and promises mercy and rescue. From then on, God is to be known as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Paul calls his readers to continue to grow in the faith. The God who rescued Israel also rescues them. As beneficiaries of God’s mercy, Christians must keep on working, doing their part to become ever more trusting and loving people of God. The Gospel’s second section is a homey story about God’s mercy. Against the advice of the land owner, the vinedresser pleads for mercy—and shows mercy—to allow the poor fig tree yet another year to become productive. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Care about the environment? Find satisfaction in recycling? We have just the solution for what to do with your used inkjet printer cartridges, used laser printer cartridges and used cell phones! Donate them to St. Ferdinand School. In cooperation with FundingFactory’s Cartridge Recycle Program, we will recycle your cartridges/cell phones and receive FREE technology equipment for the effort. So, please ask your family, friends, co-workers etc. to save their used cartridges and cell phones and send them along to St. Ferdinand School. Help save the environment and bring new technology equipment to St. Ferdinand’s at the same time. Thank you in advance! K. Donovan, Recycling Coordinator Our Lenten Alms: that others may benefit through our sacrifice, Lord, hear our prayer. “The poor you will always have with you; but you will not always have me.” (Matthew 26:11) These were Jesus’ words when the disciples sought to prevent the woman from anointing his head with expensive oil. Yes, the needy are always with us. Sometimes visible — there are homeless people walking the neighborhood with all their belongings in bags. Sometimes the needy are not so visible — Unemployment and under-employment makes it impossible to make ends meet, often forcing horrible choices in prioritizing — rent? food? utility bills? gas for the car? tuition? The people of St. Ferdinand Parish have always been concerned about the less fortunate in our society and in countless places throughout the world. Our financial and prayerful support of various concerns each month in the second collection throughout the year demonstrates that time and time again. In addition, St. Ferdinand parish- ioners are mindful of our sister parish, Our Lady of Lourdes, every month and through various contributions to our Christian Outreach (COR) program and our parish’s St. Vincent DePaul Society. During Lent we also reach out to special concerns through our Lenten Alms. One of our three areas of concern that we have identified this year through our Lenten Almsgiving are parish and school families that are in need of our support. While our St. Vincent DePaul Society specifically provides ongoing help to families in our parish boundaries and COR is our outreach program to the needy of our general neighborhood, our staff members are also aware of families that are in need of some temporary assistance this Easter. Their situations vary due to illness, death and unemployment. Your Lenten Alms may provide just the support and encouragement to your fellow parishioner that is greatly needed at this time and never forgotten. Please be as generous as you are able.
