In your class you have discussed modern eating habits and their influence on people’s health. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay about the changing eating habits in today’s society. Write your essay in 220-260 words in an appropriate style. It is no secret that the food we eat has a tremendous effect on our health and general wellbeing. If it is true that we are what we eat, then there are reasons for concern, as modern eating habits of humans have become very unhealthy. Firstly, eating habits vary from culture to culture. But in modern industrial societies there has been a growing trend toward consuming more processed, ready-to-eat foods. It has been shown that the additives and preservatives such foods contain may affect people’s mood and cause allergic reactions and digestive disorders. Secondly, most people today are not sufficiently active in their daily lives. According to WHO, 60 to 85% of people in the world, from both developed and developing countries, lead sedentary lifestyles. This, combined with poor eating habits, leads to obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Finally, more and more people today feel pressured to conform to the ideal body image promoted in the media. This is why most teenagers have been on a diet by the time they reach graduation. Some of these diets can actually do more harm than good, as they are deficient in nutrients, vitamins and minerals. On the other hand, a “slow food” movement that has recently sprung up seems to be gaining in popularity. It promotes the consumption of locally grown organic food and cooking meals at home rather than eating out. To sum up, I feel that the changes in people’s lifestyles – physical inactivity, eating out, overeating or going on extreme diets – affect our bodies and minds. Therefore, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a nutritious diet should become a habit for everyone, ideally developed in childhood.
