ABOUT LOCATION
Basilica of St. Mary in Gdańsk – a co-cathedral basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gdańsk, St. Mary
church – a historic parish church of the Main Town in Gdańsk, functioning as a Catholic and Protestant church (1572-1945),
and since 1986 a co-cathedral of the Gdańsk diocese, which became an archdiocese in 1992. The church is dedicated to the
Blessed Virgin Mary and to Her Assumption. It is located in the square between Piwna St., Chlebnicka St. and Św. Ducha St.
From the side of Mołtawa River, Mariacka St. leads directly to one of the church gates. The St. Mary Church is the biggest
brick temple in the world. Built in 1346-1506, the church is an example of Brick Gothic, a variation of the Gothic architecture
widespread in the countries of the Baltic Sea Basin. Despite its turbulent history, the churched preserved its historic
architectural form.
