Ethnologia Polona Vol. 26:2005: “Masurians – Between Polish and German Identity” by Andrzej Sakson The article focuses on the characteristics of the Masurian community. This population of Polish origin had lived for centuries within the boundaries of the Prussian (German) state on the territory of southern East Prussia (known as Warmia and Masuria). The main distinctive features of Masurians include their Polish origin and customs, German tradition, Polish family names and German first names, Polish spoken language and German written language, Slav religiousness and Evangelical denomination. As a result of World War II the Masurian population found itself within the borders of Poland. The migration of Masurians to Germany triggered a gradual process of disintegration and decline of this community. In 1947 there were 80 thousand Masurian in Poland, as compared to 5-10 thousand today. Contemporary Masurians do not any longer form closely knit local communities but are dispersed over the entire territory of historical Masuria. Their major centres are Mrągowo, Szczytno and Olsztyn. German identity, stifled by administrative measures in 1945-1989 but cultivated privately, has now become a new distinctive feature of this community. The principal institution that embraces a majority of today’s Masurians is the Evangelical-Masurian Church. Most of them consider themselves Germans or German Masurians. However, in the younger generation there is a considerable percentage of those who claim Polish identity. *** Artykuł poświęcony jest charakterystyce społeczności mazurskiej. Ta ludność polskiego pochodzenia żyła przez setki lat w obrębie państwa pruskiego (niemieckiego) na obszarze południowych Prus wschodnich (Warmii i Mazur). Główne cechy charakteryzujące Mazurów to ich polskie pochodzenie i zwyczaje, niemiecka tradycja, polskie nazwiska i niemieckie imiona, polski język i niemieckie pismo, słowiańska religijność i ewangelickie wyznanie. Author’s address: Professor Andrzej Sakson Institute for Western Affairs Mostowa 27 61-854 Poznań, POLAND
