Preface
The Committee of Oriental Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established
in 1952. The works of the Committee of Oriental Studies as an organ coordinating the
activities of Polish orientalists are focused on the supervision and promotion of research
on Asia and Africa with special reference to social sciences, with the aim of initiating and
coordinating scientific research and didactics in the main academic centers of Oriental
and African studies in Poland. The members of the Committee offer their expertise in
languages and cultures of Asia and Africa to academic and cultural institutions and
leading publishers; they serve government institutions in a consultative capacity on current
affairs of Asian and African countries, etc. The Committee of Oriental Studies evaluates
projects and publications connected with the field of Oriental studies. Since 1954 the
Committee has been issuing Rocznik Orientalistyczny (Yearly Journal of Oriental Studies),
a leading Polish Oriental periodical (formerly published by the Polish Oriental Society,
from 1914–15). Also beginning in 1954 the Committee started publishing the series of
monographs “Prace Orientalistyczne” (“Papers on Oriental Studies”).
Fifty five years of academic activity is a period long enough to make a recapitulation
of the work already done, to present the results of new research as well as to discuss the
perspectives of future development. To meet this end the Committee decided to organize
an international conference in 2008. The main objective of the conference was to bring
together those Polish scholars who have been working at the universities abroad as well
as those foreign scholars with whom we have established long-lasting co-operation.
On 8–9 December 2008 an International Conference of Oriental Studies “55 years of
the Committee of Oriental Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1952–2007)” was
held in Warsaw, at the premises of the Academy, in the Palace of Staszic. The conference
was co-organized by the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Warsaw. During
the conference 30 papers were read by the participants representing leading academic
institutions from the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania, Norway,
Russia, Sweden, the United States and Poland. The proceedings of the conference are
now being published as a special issue of Rocznik Orientalistyczny.
From the brochure The Committee of Oriental Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences 1952–2007,
ed. by Marek Mejor, with assistance of Filip Majkowski (from materials prepared by Maria Kozłowska), Polska
Akademia Nauk, Warszawa 2008, published on the occasion of the conference.
Preface
The papers collected in this volume cover a wide range of topics from different
disciplines of Oriental studies. The keynote address was presented by Prof. J. SierakowskaDyndo, Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Warsaw.
It is my pleasant duty to express sincere thanks to the Editor-in-Chief of Rocznik
Orientalistyczny for his assistance in preparing this special volume.
Also I would like to extend thanks to all the participants of the Conference and the
authors of the presented papers.
Last but not least let me thank my colleague, Agata Bareja-Starzyńska Ph.D., the
co-organizer of the Conference and the co-editor of the present volume, for her great
untiring help.
