Organisation of work The research project Cultural heritage of dissolved monasteries on the territory of former Poland and in Silesia in 18th and 19th centuries: fate, significance, cataloguing is financed within the framework of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s “National Programme for the Development of Humanities” for 2012-2016. The Project has been carried out since 6 March 2012 by the Polish Historical Society. Its leader is Prof dr hab. Marek Derwich from the Institute of History, University of Wrocław. At the moment 191 people are involved in the Project to a lesser or greater extent. Their work is coordinated by the Project Office team: (since 1 July 2013) Mgr Angelika Lipka (secretary), Joanna Adamska, Mgr Katarzyna Romanow and Mgr Magdalena Gawrońska (assistants). A list of the Project collaborators is available on www.kasaty.pl/zespol. 1.1 Website One of the most important tools in the implementation and promotion of the Project is its website, www.kasaty.pl, which is constantly developed and improved. 1.2 Knowledge Portal An IT team, made up of Mgr Patryk Dawidziuk (coordinator), Mgr Szymon Sztajer, Mgr Rafał Toboła and Mgr Marek Wójcikowski, is continuing its work on the Knowledge Portal, in close collaboration with the Project Office. A test version has been launched and is available at www.kasaty.pl. Members of the team are verifying and optimising the structure of a dozen or so databases as well as the method of adding new records to them. The databases concern monasteries, religious orders and congregations, bibliography, printed books form former monasteries, archival materials, documents and manuscripts from former monasteries, musical items, official documents, movables, architecture, natural heritage, ownership marks, and the last monastics. A decision has been made to add two new databases, of iconography and plans. Work on them is now under way. Database records are still collected offline (special forms). They will be automatically exported and made available in the Knowledge Portal. 1 Research financed under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s “National Programme for the Development of Humanities” for 2012-2016. So far the following records have been collected: 1,357 records in the monasteries database; 798 records in the musical items database. 72 records in the database of religious orders and congregations; 138 records in the bibliographic database; 14,559 records in the database of printed books from former monasteries; 7,500 records in the database of archival materials, documents and manuscripts from former monasteries; 1,500 records in the movables database; 500 records in the database of the last monastics. 2. Research Research under the Project is conducted by individual collaborators and by research teams. 2.1. Research teams Team I did not work in the period in question. One of his members, Witalij Rosowski, conducted individual research (see below). Team II. Composition: eight scholars (no change). Coordinator: Prof Piotr Oliński (Nicolaus Copernicus University). Objective: to make a record of the legacy of monasteries dissolved in West Prussia. Report, see HM 3, 2013, p. 443. Coordinator: Rev Prof Janusz Królikowski (John Paul II University). Objective: inventory and study of the cultural heritage of monasteries dissolved in the Diocese of Tarnów. Composition: three scholars; scholars who have left since the previous reporting period: Iwona Brankiewicz (left in June); scholars joining the team since the previous reporting period: Mgr inż Natalia Kot, doctoral student at the Department of Landscape Design and Conservation. Coordinator: Prof Małgorzata Milecka (University of Life Sciences, Lublin). Objective: inventory and study of parks and gardens of monasteries dissolved in the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Report, see HM 3, 2013, pp. 455-456. Team V. Composition: two scholars (no change). Coordinator: Dr Marcin Jewdokimow (Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University). Objective: investigate the material and symbolic significance of selected dissolved monasteries to their local communities. Report, see HM 3, 2013, pp. 457-458. Team VI. Composition: six scholars (no change). Coordinator: Mgr Małgorzata Kośka (Central Archives of Historical Records). Objective: inventory and study of records relating to former monasteries and dissolutions, and kept in the Central Archives of Historical Records, Warsaw. Report, see HM 3, 2013, p. 459. Team VII. Composition: two scholars; scholars who have left since the previous reporting period: Paweł Janowski. Coordinator: Dr Piotr Dymmel (State Archives in Lublin, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University). Objective: edition of official documents compiled during monastery dissolutions and kept in the State Archives in Lublin. Report, see HM 3, 2013, p. 460. Team VIII. Composition: four scholars (no change). Coordinator: Mgr Izabela Wiencek (Warsaw University Library). The team has suspended its activities for a period between 1 May 2013 and 1 February 2014. Team IX. The team has disbanded owing to the fact that its members have different tasks to perform. Work on an inventory of the holdings of the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Kórnik Library is carried out by the Project Office. Team X. Composition: three scholars (no change). Coordinator: Mgr Urszula Bończuk-Dawidziuk (University of Wrocław Museum). Objective: a) inventory of musical instruments from monasteries dissolved in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Silesia; b) inventory and study of the cultural heritage of monasteries dissolved in Wielkopolska; c) inventory and study of records relating to former monasteries and dissolutions, and kept in various archives in Wielkopolska. Composition: two scholars; scholars who have left since the previous reporting period: Anna Zajchowska. Objective: inventory of archival materials illustrating the fate of the cultural heritage of dissolved monasteries and kept in the State Archives in Radom. Report, see HM 3, 2013, pp. 509-510. 2.2. Preliminary research and miscellaneous studies Work has been carried out to find and systematise source information about the dissolved monasteries, and to enter the data into the Knowledge Portal. A team of students, graduates and doctoral students of the Institute of History, University of Wrocław, headed by Mgr Piotr Piętkowski and Weronika Wojciech (Mgr Anna Brodziak, Mgr Dominik Kwieciak, Magdalena Małota, Kacper Manikowski, Jacek Wójcik, Mgr Paula Zawisza, Marcin Zdyb and Patrycja Ziomek), in collaboration with Anna Dalidowska, Mgr Piotr Fedas and Mgr Natalia Kocowska, have been adding new records to the databases, primarily of printed books, archival materials, documents and manuscripts, movables, architecture and the last monastics, mainly on the basis of data from printed catalogues, inventories and other sources. Individual studies have also been conducted as part of the Project: Mgr Andrzej Buczyło (Nicolaus Copernicus University of Toruń) is conducting preliminary research at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw, fonds 170, Generalne Dyrektorium. Dr Janina Dzik (Cracow) is carrying out preliminary research in archives and libraries as well as field research in Małopolska, looking for works of art and printed books from dissolved monasteries. Dr Agnieszka Fluda-Krokos (Pedagogical University of Cracow) is continuing her work on documenting and making an inventory of printed books and archival materials from the former Monastery of the Augustinian Hermits in Książ Wielki, now kept in the sacristy of the local parish church. Mgr Łukasz Janeczek (Jan Długosz University, Kielce) is continuing his work on the monograph Dziedzictwo skasowanego klasztoru cystersów w Koprzywnicy w XIX wieku [The Heritage of the Cistercian Monastery in Koprzywnica Dissolved in the 19th Century]. Dr Beata Lorens (University of Rzeszów) has carried out preliminary research at the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv. Report, see HM 3, 2013, pp. 516-548. Mgr Jerzy Łojko (Konin) is continuing his preliminary research focusing on the fate of the last monastics from monasteries dissolved in Wielkopolska. Mgr Magdalena Marosz (National Archives in Cracow) has compiled an inventory of National Archives records from dissolved monasteries of the Augustinian Hermits or records concerning their dissolution and post-dissolution fate of their property. She has also started working on a similar inventory of records from dissolved monasteries of the Augustinian Hermits or records concerning their dissolution and post-dissolution fate of their property kept in other archives or libraries. Dr Krzysztof Mastykarz (Bydgoszcz) is continuing his work on an inventory of post-dissolution records kept in the Diocesan Archives in Kielce. Mgr Dorota Matyaszczyk (Poznań) is conducting archive and field research in Wielkopolska and Kujawy, and is working on an inventory and edition of source materials obtained in the course of her research. Mgr Ewa Mikołajczak (Municipal Building Archives in Wrocław) is continuing her preliminary research at the Municipal Buildings Archives in Wrocław comprising 19th- and 20th-centry plans and designs illustrating the fate of immovable property belonging to monasteries dissolved in Wrocław. So far the research has produced an inventory of documents concerning the fate of former monastery buildings on Wyspa Piaskowa [Sand Island] (to be published). Mgr Justyna Mizerka (Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno) has compiled an inventory of monastic records kept at the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno. She is continuing her work on a complete inventory of records concerning former monasteries and official dissolution records kept in the archives. Dr hab. Jerzy Pająk, Dr hab. Marta Pieniążek-Samek and Prof dr hab. Jerzy Szczepański (Jan Długosz University, Kielce) are working on a catalogue of maps, plans and architectural drawings from dissolved monasteries kept in the State Archives in Radom. Fr Alojzy Pańczak OFM (Woźniki) is continuing his work on an edition of a 19th-century inventory of the Franciscan Monastery in Woźniki. Mgr Krzysztof Pawlik (Wrocław) is continuing his work on an edition of Katalogen des hisiegen Gymnasiums so wie der Stifts- und Klosterbibliotheken in Neisse 1812 from the collection of the State Archives in Opole. Dr Elżbieta Piwowarczyk (John Paul II University of Cracow) is conducting preliminary research in Cracow archives and libraries, studying primarily the so-called Antoni Schneider Files ([1368]17731877), kept in the National Archives in Cracow, Wawel Branch, fonds 684, nos 69-71, 820-824, 1157-1160, an inventory of which she has compiled. Dr Gregor Ploch (Archidiecezja Wiedeńska) has compiled an inventory of monastic dissolution records kept in the State Archives in Vienna (currently being prepared for publication) and is continuing his research on it. Dr Olga Miriam Przybyłowicz (Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw) is continuing her preliminary research at the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno, the objective of which to make an inventory of the legacy of the Poor Clares from Gniezno kept in the archives. Dr Marek Romaniuk and Mgr Agnieszka Woźniak-Hlebionek (State Archives in Bydgoszcz) have compiled a general inventory of archival units containing documents from dissolved monasteries kept in the State Archives in Bydgoszcz. Dr Mirosława Sobczyńska-Szczepańska (Silesian University) and Dr Emilia Ziółkowska (Nicolaus Copernicus University of Toruń) have carried out preliminary research at the Diocesan Archives in Drohiczyn and the Russian State Historical Archives in Saint Petersburg. Their results will be published in the next issue of HM. Dr hab. Anna Szylar (Prof Tarnowski State School of Higher Vocational Education) has submitted her book, „Pióro żadne nie jest w stanie wyrazić jej zalet”. Listy informujące o śmierci mniszek adresowane do opactwa benedyktynek w Sandomierzu w zbiorach Biblioteki Diecezjalnej w Sandomierzu (1781-1897) [“There is No Pen to Express Her Virtues”. Letters on the Deaths of Nuns Addressed to the Benedictine Abbey in Sandomierz in the Collection of the Diocesan Library in Sandomierz (1781–1897)], for publication in the Project series. The book will be published in the first half of 2014. In addition, she conducts research in various archives in Małopolska. Prof Tadeusz M. Trajdos (Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences) is finishing his work on an edition of the last extant inventories of the Benedictine Monastery of Stare Troki from 1797 and 1799. Publication is planned for 2014. Prof Magdalena Ujma (University of Opole) has carried out preliminary research at the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv.
