A CHANCE TO WELCOME THOSE WHO HAVE DRIFTED
AWAY….Perhaps you have heard of the massive outreach to
Catholics who have drifted away from the Church. The Archdiocese of Chicago along with the Diocese of Rockford and the
Diocese of Joliet are undertaking an evangelization initiative Catholics Come Home - that invites our sisters and brothers
back to the practice of the faith. This evangelization initiative
began last week and will continue through the end of January.
Over 2,000 television ads will air on the major networks in English, Spanish and Polish. These ads encourage those who have
drifted away to come back home.
There are 20 million Catholics in the USA who no longer practice the faith or do so sporadically. This is in addition to the 70
million Catholics who are more active. In fact, if one takes the
number of those who have drifted away, it adds to the second
largest religion in the USA. Practicing Catholics being the first.
Amazing, isn’t it, that so many have drifted away. We need to
invite our brothers and sisters to join us!
The ads airing on television are the first step - inviting - in this
evangelization initiative. The other two overlapping steps are
welcoming and accompanying. The site
www.catholicscomehomeCHICAGO.org will help you with additional information. While ads might help, nothing is more effective than a personal invitation. Invite someone you know to
come back home to the Catholic Church. And to anyone reading
this bulletin article that is returning to the Church this Christmas
season, WELCOME!

Sunday, December 27 - Luke
2:41-52
The boy Jesus is found in the
Temple.
...Today we celebrate the feast of
the Holy Family. This feast is part
of the Christmas season, and we
should place today's Gospel in the context of what Luke's Gospel tells us about the birth of Jesus. Luke has been answering
the question “Who is Jesus?” through his stories of the births of
John the Baptist and Jesus. Today's Gospel reading continues
this theme. It has no parallel in the other Gospels and is the
conclusion of Luke's Infancy Narrative.
Mary, Joseph, and Jesus are presented in this Gospel as a
faithful Jewish family. They are participating in the annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, an event shared
each year with family and friends. When Jesus is found, Luke
describes him as seated in the Temple in the midst of the Jewish teachers. Although he is young, Jesus seems not to need
teaching about his Jewish tradition. In his dialogue with these
learned teachers, Jesus astounds them with his insight and understanding. Jesus is a child of Israel. His Father is God.
The dialogue between Mary and Jesus contains many references to family relationships. In fact, in this Gospel reading
Mary and Joseph are never identified by name. Instead they are
referred to by their relationship to Jesus. Ultimately, this emphasizes Luke's point about the identity of Jesus. When Mary and
Joseph find Jesus in the Temple, they question Jesus and express their anxiety. Jesus replies in words that many have
thought to be disrespectful. Jesus says that he was never lost;
he was at home. Jesus is God's Son, and he is in his Father's
house. Luke will continue to suggest that faith in Jesus establishes new family relationships as he describes Jesus' public
ministry.

Luke 2:16-21
The shepherds find Jesus in
a manger in Bethlehem.
Today's reading is a continuation from the Gospel
proclaimed at the Christmas Mass at midnight. In it the shepherds act upon the message they receive from the angel and go
to find Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem. In their visit to the
manger, the shepherds find things just as the angel had said.
The shepherds' visit, therefore, is a moment of fulfillment, manifestation, and the beginning of the salvation we receive through
Christ.
In the context of today's Solemnity, this reading also helps us
focus on Mary as the Mother of God. The reading tells us at
least three things about Mary as a mother. First, Mary is described as a reflective person, keeping the reports of the shepherds in her heart. Second, we are reminded of how obedient
Mary was to God when she named the baby Jesus as the angel
Gabriel had directed. Third, this reading shows Mary and Joseph faithfully observing their Jewish tradition by having Jesus
circumcised.
Mary's faithfulness to God is evident in all three of these
things. Her reflection upon the events in her life indicates that
she was a person of prayer. This prayer made possible her obedience to God and God's will, even if the outcome was not clear.
Finally, her faithfulness to a community of faith grounded her
relationship with God and enabled her to participate in God's
plan of salvation.
Because of Mary's faithfulness to God, she was able to receive the gift of God's Son and accept her role in God's plan for
salvation. By doing so, she models for us the path of discipleship and is also called Mother of the Church.

LA SAGRADA FAMILIA: JESUS, MARIA Y JOSE
Los padres de Jesús iban todos los años a Jerusalén para la fiesta de la Pascua. Cuando Jesús cumplió los doce años, subió también con ellos a la fiesta, pues así
había de ser. Al terminar los días de la fiesta regresaron, pero el niño Jesús se quedó en Jerusalén sin que
sus padres lo supieran. Seguros de que estaba con la
caravana de vuelta, caminaron todo un día. Después se
pusieron a buscarlo entre sus parientes y conocidos.
Como no lo encontraran, volvieron a Jerusalén en su
búsqueda. Al tercer día lo hallaron en el Templo, sentado en medio de los maestros de la Ley, escuchándolos
y haciéndoles preguntas. Todos los que le oían quedaban asombrados de su inteligencia y de sus respuestas.
Sus padres se emocionaron mucho al verlo; su madre le
decía: «Hijo, ¿por qué nos has hecho esto? Tu padre y
yo hemos estado muy angustiados mientras te buscábamos.» El les contestó: «¿Y por qué me buscaban? ¿No
saben que yo debo estar donde mi Padre?» Pero ellos
no comprendieron esta respuesta. Jesús entonces regresó con ellos, llegando a Nazaret. Posteriormente siguió
obedeciéndoles. Su madre, por su parte, guardaba todas
estas cosas en su corazón. Mientras tanto, Jesús crecía
en sabiduría, en edad y en gracia, ante Dios y ante los
hombres.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:
Cuando nace un niño, uno tiene que darle un
nombre. ¿Cómo se va a llamar? Jesús tenía un
nombre mucho antes de que naciera de la Virgen
María. Desde toda la eternidad, él es la Palabra
de Dios. Muchos siglos antes de que el Verbo
encarnara en forma humana, los que lo esperaban le dieron otros nombres. El Profeta Isaías recuerda varios de
ellos: Consejero maravilloso, Dios fuerte, Padre para siempre,
Príncipe de la paz. Estos nombres nos indican quién es él: un signo de esperanza en medio de los más oscuros períodos de la historia humana, el cumplimiento de la promesa hecha por Dios a la
Casa de David.
Cuando nace un niño, uno se pregunta de nuevo:¿A quién se parece? ¿Se parece a su madre o tal vez a su abuelo paterno? San Pablo, en su carta a Tito dice que Jesús se parece a Dios. Jesús es la
manifestación de Dios para nosotros y él mismo diría apenas unos
días antes de su muerte: “El que me ha visto, ha visto al Padre”.
Esto será más evidente, nos recuerda San Pablo, cuando Jesús
vuelva en gloria: “nuestro gran Dios y Salvador, Jesucristo”.
Cuando nace un niño, los padres suelen contemplar su futuro:
¿Qué podría ser este niño? Será él, o ella, un médico, un abogado
o un profesor, o tal vez responda al llamado de Dios a la vida religiosa? El Evangelio de San Lucas, nos dice que Jesús actúa como
Dios, porque viene a salvarnos de nuestros pecados. “Hoy, en la
ciudad de David, les ha nacido un Salvador”.
Cuando un niño nace, todo en una familia cambia. No sólo la rutina de la familia y las prioridades de los padres del niño: el mundo
cambia para siempre, porque una nueva creación de Dios vive
entre nosotros, es ahora parte de nosotros. Esta Navidad, cuando
veamos al bebé en el pesebre y escuchemos a los ángeles cantando
y a los pastores adorándolo, sabremos que Dios ha venido entre
nosotros, que la Palabra eterna se hizo carne. Ha nacido un niño.
Es Cristo, nuestro Salvador. Y nuestro mundo cambió para siempre.
Usted y sus intenciones serán recordadas en mis Misas y oraciones
de Navidad; por favor, manténgame a mí y a las necesidades de la
Arquidiócesis de Chicago en las suyas. Que Dios los bendiga y

ŚWIĘTO ŚWIĘTEJ RODZINY
JEZUSA, MARYI I JÓZEFA
Rodzice Jezusa chodzili co roku do Jerozolimy na
Święto Paschy. Gdy miał lat dwanaście, udali się tam
zwyczajem świątecznym. Kiedy wracali po skończonych uroczystościach, został Jezus w Jerozolimie, a
tego nie zauważyli Jego Rodzice. Przypuszczając, że
jest w towarzystwie pątników, uszli dzień drogi i szukali Go wśród krewnych i znajomych.
Gdy Go nie znaleźli, wrócili do Jerozolimy, szukając
Go. Dopiero po trzech dniach odnaleźli Go w świątyni, gdzie siedział między nauczycielami, przysłuchiwał się im i zadawał pytania. Wszyscy zaś, którzy Go
słuchali, byli zdumieni bystrością Jego umysłu i odpowiedziami. Na ten widok zdziwili się bardzo, a Jego Matka rzekła do Niego: "Synu, czemuś nam to
uczynił? Oto ojciec Twój i Ja z bólem serca szukaliśmy Ciebie". Lecz On Im odpowiedział:
"Czemuście Mnie szukali? Czy nie wiedzieliście, że
powinienem być w tym, co należy do mego Ojca?"
Oni jednak nie zrozumieli tego, co Im powiedział.
Potem poszedł z Nimi i wrócił do Nazaretu; i był Im
poddany. A Matka Jego chowała wiernie wszystkie te
wspomnienia w swym sercu. Jezus zaś czynił postępy
w mądrości, w latach i w łasce u Boga i u ludzi.

Drodzy Bracia i Siostry w Chrystusie,
Gdy rodzi się dziecko, trzeba nadać mu imię.
Jak je nazwać? Imię Jezusa było znane na długo
zanim przyszedł na świat zrodzony z Maryi
Panny. Przez całą wieczność był i jest Słowem
Bożym. Na wiele wieków zanim jeszcze Słowo
stało się Ciałem, wyglądający Jego przyjścia
nadawali Mu inne imiona. Prorok Izajasz przypomina: Przedziwny Doradca, Bóg Mocny, Odwieczny Ojciec,
Książę Pokoju. Imiona te mówią nam kim On jest: znakiem nadziei
w najbardziej mrocznych okreskach historii ludzkości, spełnieniem
obietnicy danej przez Boga Domowi Dawida.
Gdy rodzi się dziecko, pada pytanie: do kogo jest podobne? Czy
wygląda jak matka czy może raczej jak dziadek ojca? Św. Paweł w
liście do Tytusa pisze, że Jezus jest podobny do Boga. Bóg objawia
swoją obecność w Jezusie, który sam powiedział na kilka dni przed
swoją śmiercią: „Kto Mnie zobaczył, zobaczył także i Ojca”. Jak
przypomina Św. Paweł, najbardziej oczywiste będzie to wtedy, gdy
Jezus powróci w chwale – „nasz wszechmocny Bóg i Zbawiciel,
Jezus Chrystus”.
Gdy rodzi się dziecko, rodzice zastanawiają się często nad jego
przyszłością: Kim będzie? Czy będzie lekarzem, prawnikiem czy
też nauczycielem? A może zechce odpowiedzieć na Boże powołanie do życia duchownego? Ewangelia wg św. Łukasza mówi, że
Jezus działa jak Bóg ponieważ przybywa, żeby wybawić nas od
naszych grzechów. „Dziś w mieście Dawida narodził się wam Zbawiciel, którym jest Mesjasz, Pan”.
Gdy rodzi się dziecko, życie rodziny odmienia się całkowicie.
Zmieniają się nie tylko codzienna rutyna i priorytety rodziców
dziecka – od tej chwili świat będzie już inny, ponieważ nowe stworzenie Boże żyje między nami i jest jednym z nas. W nadchodzące
święta Bożego Narodzenia, przyglądając się Dzieciątku leżącemu
w żłóbku, słuchając śpiewu aniołów i patrząc na pasterzy zastygłych w podziwie, będziemy wiedzieć, że przyszedł do nas Bóg, że
odwieczne Słowo stało się Ciałem. Urodziło się Dziecko. To Chrystus, nasz Zbawiciel. I nasz świat zmienił się na zawsze.
Będę pamiętał o Was i o Waszych intencjach w moich modlitwach
i podczas świątecznych Mszy św. Wy zaś pamiętajcie proszę o
mnie i o potrzebach Archidiecezji Chicago. Niech Wam Bóg błogosławi! Wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia!
