Gadgets are small, useful objects. We all have them in our homes. We have stationery like
staplers, paperclips and pencil sharpeners. We have personal items like watches and mobile
phones. There are also household objects in all our homes like torches and bottle openers. But
have you ever thought of the history of these gadgets?
The stapler is not a modern invention. The first machine for joining papers together probably
belonged to the French king, Louis XV, who lived in eighteen century. In the nineteenth
century people started to use paper more so they all wanted staplers. From that moment, we
have never stopped using them. They are also really fun to use!
Inventors have also invented electronic gadgets and they are very popular. My favourite
electronic gadget is the mobile phone. Engineers presented the first hand-held mobile phone
in 1973. It was quite big and heavy. It weighed almost one kilogram. Mobile phones became
popular in the 1990s. From the moment I got my mobile phone, I have never gone anywhere
without it. It’s always in my bag.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro People celebrate Carnival all over Brazil in February or March,
depending on the date of Easter that year. Each region in Brazil has developed its own way of
celebrating the festival, but the week-long Carnival in Rio has become world famous. Most
people agree that Carnival started as a pagan celebration in ancient Rome. Carnival balls first
came to Brazil from Italy in the late nineteenth century, with balls at the Copacabana Palace
and the Municipal Theater.
3
Nowadays, they have become all night parties with non-stop loud music. The Samba Parade,
which has become the most popular event in Carnival week, started in 1930s in different parts
of the city. Since 1984, the organizers have held it in the Sambodrome, the giant samba
stadium in downtown Rio. Millions of people go to it every year and has thousands of dancers
in its parade and 600 to 800 drummers. Visitors say they have never heard such loud music in
their lives. The dancers all wear amazing costumes. At the end of the parade, when the judges
have seen all the samba schools, they choose the best one.
