PAUL THE HERMIT
Paul, the first well-known Christian hermit,
never expected to enjoy life alone in the desert.
His parents had died in the year 244, when Paul
was only fifteen years old. Born in lower Egypt,
he loved the culture of his native land and also
knew Greek well. As a Christian he was in danger
from the persecution of Decius. A pagan friend
hid him in his house but his brother-in-law was
about to betray Paul (so as to get his hands on
Paul’s inheritance), and for this reason the saint
fled into the desert to hide in the caves there.
He grew to love the solitary life: dressed only in
a garment made of palm leaves, he lived by a
cool stream meditating on God. Until he was
forty-three the fruit of the palm tree was all he
had to eat. Then, so St. Jerome tells us, a raven
began to bring Paul half a loaf of bread a day.
This was a healthy life. A contemporary hermit
was Saint Anthony who, at the age of ninety,
decided he would call on Paul. When the two
saints met, the raven that had brought Paul half a
loaf a day for sixty years incredibly brought a full
loaf, to serve both men. The two saints took a
long time to start eating, since Paul insisted that
Anthony, as his guest, should have the privilege
of breaking the bread, whereas Anthony insisted
that Paul, as the older of the two, should act as
host.
Eventually they both broke bread
simultaneously.
Paul was one hundred and thirteen years old
when he died. Saint Anthony again visited the
saintly hermit and found him stretched out in
prayer. For some time Anthony prayed beside
Paul before he realized that his fellow saint had
died. For the rest of his life, Anthony cherished
Paul’s palm-leaf clothing, and wore it himself on
important church feasts.

A POINT OF INTEREST: This is a general rule for
all blessed objects and sacramentals.
Sacramentals should be burned and then buried.
Larger sacramental that don’t burn should be
altered so they no longer appear to be a
sacramental. For example, a statue can be
broken up into small pieces and then buried.
Broken rosaries can be further disassembled and
burned or buried. Objects made of metal can be
taken to a silver-platter and melted.
Some hesitate to break up or burn sacred
things. But it is generally held that items lose
their blessing if they can no longer be used.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Catholic Charities VIP
Center in Lynbrook need volunteers to assist in
driving visually impaired people to and from this
center on Thursdays. We have needs for drivers
in the Bellmore, Bethpage, Cedarhurst, East
Rockaway, Floral Park, Hempstead, Merrick, New
Hyde Park, North Bellmore, Oceanside, Wantagh
and Woodmere areas. If you are interested and
available in the above areas or in any other
volunteer opportunities, Please contact Mary

RAINBOWS FOR ALL GOD’S CHILDREN
Notre Dame Church in New Hyde Park invites

SAKRAMENT CHRZTU ŚWIĘTEGO
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Baptism is an important ritual in the Catholic
community. This is the start of the child’s journey in
his spirituality, and his or her parents, godparents,
relatives, and friends are there to welcome him and
support him. Beyond this welcoming ritual, Baptism
carries also with it other deep spiritual meanings. In
Baptism, the Holy Spirit gets to dwell in the child. This
sacrament is a public proclamation that they
acknowledge God in their life, and that they need Him
in order to get through the challenges in their spiritual
life and in other aspects of their life as well. Through
Baptism, God is honored because the sacrament in
itself shows that God is the one powerful and loving
enough to cleanse us from our sins. It was mentioned
in the bible that Christ was also baptized in River
Jordan to show that being renewed again is possible
only through God. Another mention of baptism in the
bible is at Colossians 2, where it is said that the child,
as he begins his life, can be freed from the sin he was
born with, only through Christ. That’s why early on in
his life, he should be baptized. Another deep
significance of baptism is that during the ceremony,
everyone is reminded of their baptism vows to turn
away from sin and to acknowledge that sin brings us
to death, and that the only way to be resurrected is
through faith in Christ. When the water is poured
three times to the child’s forehead, it symbolizes that
the child is one with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
While the whole ceremony can be considered simple,
the meaning of almost each activity, and every word
used, is used to show that public proclamation of the
child, and his involvement in the Christian community
by becoming a person free from sin, saved only by
God, denounces sin in his life, and the Holy Spirit
dwells in him. Baptisms at our church are held every
Sunday (except the first Sunday of each month) at
11AM (in Polish) and 12.30PM (in English). Please

Chrzest jest ważnym rytuałem w katolickiej
wspólnocie. To jest początek podróży dziecka w jego
duchowości. Jego rodzice, chrzestni, krewni i znajomi
są tam, aby go powitać i wspierać. Chrzest niesie ze
sobą również inne głębokie znaczenie duchowe. W
chrzcie, Duch Święty ma zamieszkać w dziecku. Ten
sakrament to publiczne głoszenie, że uznaje ono Boga
w swoim zyciu. Wspomniano w Biblii, że Chrystus
został również ochrzczony w rzece Jordan, aby
pokazać, że ponowna odnowa jest możliwa tylko
przez Boga. Kolejna wzmianka o chrzcie w Biblii jest w
Liście do Kolosan 2, gdzie jest powiedziane, że
dziecko, jak zaczyna swoje życie, może być uwolnione
od grzechu pierworodnego, tylko przez Chrystusa.
Dlatego już na początku swojego życia, powinno być
ochrzczone. Innym głębokim znaczeniem chrztu jest
to, że podczas ceremonii, każdy z nas przypomina
sobie o swoim sakramencie aby odwrócić się od
grzechu i uznać, że grzech prowadzi nas do śmierci a
chrzest jest jedynym sposobem, aby zostać
wskrzeszonym przez wiarę w Chrystusa. Gdy woda
oblewa trzy razy czoło dziecka, jest to symbol, że jest
ono jako jedno z Ojcem, Synem i Duchem Świętym.
Podczas gdy cała ceremonia może być uważana za
prostą sensem jej jest publiczne ogłoszenie dziecka w
społeczności chrześcijańskiej jako człowieka wolnego
od grzechu, który potępia grzech w swoim życiu oraz,
ze Duch Święty mieszka w nim. W polskiej tradycji to
jedno z najważniejszych sakramentów. Sakrament
chrztu w naszym kościele odprawiany jes tw każdą
niedzielę (za wyjątkiem pierwszej niedzieli miesiąca) o
