Informacje dla ucznia
1. Na stronie tytułowej arkusza w wyznaczonym miejscu wpisz swój kod
ustalony przez komisję.

3. Czytaj uważnie wszystkie teksty i zadania.
4. Rozwiązania zapisuj długopisem lub piórem. Nie używaj korektora.
5. W zadaniach zamkniętych:
 Jeżeli podane są trzy odpowiedzi: A, B, C lub D, wybierz tylko
jedną odpowiedź i zaznacz ją znakiem „X” bezpośrednio na

TRAVEL NIGHTMARES
It's finally here, that moment you've been waiting for all year. Your suitcase is packed, you've
got your passport handy, the currency is exchanged, and your hotel has already been booked.
All you have to do now is board your flight and then two weeks of stress-free bliss await you
at the other side.
That's the dream. But sometimes the reality doesn't quite work out as we planned. My own
personal travel nightmare occurred when I spent 12 hours in an airport departure lounge,
waiting to board a flight as a blizzard swirled outside. After consistently being informed that
the delay wouldn't be long, myself and other passengers were eventually told that all flights
would be cancelled and we should come back tomorrow. I eventually got to my destination
two days later, which was just a little bit infuriating.
But my experience pales into insignificance compared with some unlucky Cathay Pacific
passengers who were travelling from New York to Hong Kong last year. A severe hail storm
forced their plane to unexpectedly land at an airport in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhait,
in order to wait for better flying conditions. However, once the weather cleared the airplane's
crew had finished their working shift and were required by law to take time off until the next
day. What made matters even worse was that local immigration regulations meant passengers
were forbidden from leaving the plane because they didn't have the correct travel documents,
so the 257 people on board were forced to sit and wait on the runway for 16 hours before their
journey began again.
However, if you are lucky enough to get to your destination without any obstacles, your
problems could only just be beginning. You might have happily navigated passport control
before happily skipping towards the luggage carousel to pick up your bags and head
to the hotel. But as the other passengers pick up their suitcases and disappear
in to the sunshine outside, the realisation slowly dawns on you that something isn't quite right.
Your bag isn't there, it's gone missing, and all you will have to wear for your two-week stay
in paradise is the old tracksuit that you wore for the flight purely for comfort. Of course, most

passengers are eventually reunited with their bags, but still, anytime on holiday without
the correct clothing can rightly be considered a bit of a nightmare.
And while lost baggage and delayed flights can cause stress, this is just the tip of the iceberg
in terms of what really can go wrong when you venture abroad. No traveller will have
survived without at some point contracting what we in England call "Delhi belly", which is
caused by drinking unsafe water or food. If you are unlucky enough to be struck down by this
condition, a fate almost worse than death awaits you. Expect two days
of sweating, belly aches, vomiting and delirium, with the toilet bowl being your new pillow,
all because you just had to try the local delicacy. Once you've contracted this illness, all hope
is gone. At least for 36 hours. But there is one way to avoid ever getting sick. And it really is
quite simple. If you think the meal you ate might have been undercooked, unsafe or just a bit
dodgy, simply drink a can of Coca-Cola. That stuff kills everything. Any bacteria that has
started to multiply in your stomach will be stopped immediately by this all-American
favourite.
Then there's the sun. That beautiful golden ball of gas and fire that brings warmth to our tired
bodies as we sunbathe on a tropical beach. Well, that is of course if you've taken the sensible
measure of putting on some suntan lotion before you take a stroll down to the sand. There
can't be many people out there who haven't suffered from being burnt at one point or another.
You return to your hotel room after a few hours sleeping on a towel and before you know
it you've turned as pink as a lobster and just putting on a cotton T-shirt becomes one of the
most painful experiences imaginable. Obviously, the simplest solution is to put on a highfactor suntan lotion before you step outside. But if it's too late and you're already burnt, then
you must prevent the skin from drying out by applying moisturizer. Likewise you need
to keep your body hydrated, so lots of water and some rehydration salts should bring you back
to normal in 24 hours.
I guess the key with every trip abroad is simply to expect the unexpected. No matter how well
planned your holiday is, often the travel nightmares that occur simply cannot be prevented.
So, as long as you can get your hands on a can of coke, you have your bag, some sunscreen
and the tickets to your destination, the wisest option is to keep your fingers crossed and hope
for the best. You never know, it might all work out in the end.
