Rector’s Welcome
4
Studying at the University of Silesia can be a rewarding
experience. A wide range of courses provided by 12 faculties and several multidisciplinary schools in Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów and Cieszyn is one of the reasons for choosing our University. Students may also attend the School of
Polish Language and Culture in which qualified and experienced staff will help them to learn the Polish language and
to understand the complexities of the Polish culture. In this
age of globalisation, this kind of knowledge has become indispensable for a successful international career. The diversity
of participants at language courses ranges from foreign students and diplomats to business people and people who simply love Poland.
The University of Silesia is one of the largest universities in
Poland. Currently, there are about 45,000 students studying
at our University to obtain Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees,
as well as PhDs in various disciplines. Thanks to its location
in the heart of Upper Silesia, Poland’s old industrial region
with its distinct history and cultural identity, the University
is attractive to students and scientists representing all major
disciplines of arts and science.
Prof. dr hab. Janusz Janeczek
Rector
Studying and living in the region of Upper Silesia offers an
opportunity to visit historical sites, ranging from underground
mining museums, a fire brigade museum, and an old brewery
to an ethnographic park.

Historical background
The University of Silesia was established in Katowice in 1968
as the ninth university in Poland and is an autonomous state
university. The University has its origins in the Higher School
of Education, which was founded in 1928 – at that time, it was
the only institution of higher education in the region. Later,
the school became a branch of the Jagiellonian University in
Kraków, the oldest Polish University. It now has campuses in
four cities in the region: Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów and
Cieszyn. The majority of faculties are located in Katowice.
The main University site, located within a five-minute-walk
from the centre of Katowice, allows access to the many amenities of this progressive city.
In the heart of Silesia
The University is located in the centre of a heavily industrialised region. Coal, steel and other industries exert a strong
influence upon our life. For that reason, we concentrate on
equipping our students for life, as well as for work, so that
they may acquire a deeper understanding of their inner
resources. Our close links with the Silesian region and local
industries play an important role in ensuring that our courses meet the demands of the present day and fulfil students’
expectations.
The University of Silesia offers good research and teaching
conditions for all who need to conduct research work, would
like to pursue undergraduate, Master’s Degree courses, postgraduate studies, training courses in professional skills and
PhD studies.

a tennis court at their disposal.
The Summer School lasts four weeks in August. The cost of
the course is 680 EURO.
Rules of participation
The course is open to anyone who is over 18 years old and
has completed secondary education. In order to take part in
the course, you should submit a completed application form
to the School, together with a receipt of payment of the registration fee for the course of your choice. Note, that the application and the receipt have to be submitted no later than two
months before the beginning of a particular course.
Traditions and customs
An essential part of each course of Polish language, culture
and literature is the joint festivities of the most important
Polish holidays. It is impossible to demonstrate the „spirit of
Poland” without this component, because of the close connection between phraseology, history and culture. Both students
and teachers of the School create one big family of people
fascinated by Poland and the Polish language. They celebrate
together even the most family-centred holiday – Christmas.
Representatives of many different nations sit at one big table,
share the “opłatek” (wafer), sample Silesian cuisine, sing
Christmas carols, and discuss the similarities and differences
between Polish traditions and customs and their own. The Easter celebration is also joyful. The symbolic character of this holiday inspires reflection of a philosophical and cultural nature.
Painting Easter eggs provides an opportunity to express one’s
own inventiveness and creativity. According to an old Polish
tradition, the end of November is the perfect time for telling
fortunes to every single boy and girl. Andrzejki is the only
opportunity during the year to find out who is going to get
married and what the future will bring.

Foreign students must have a valid passport and a Polish visa.
You can apply for a visa at the Polish embassy/consulate in
your home country.
Accommodation
The University of Silesia has about 3,300 places of accommodation in 11 student halls of residence. They are mostly
double bedrooms, all with self-catering facilities. Accommodation is charged on a monthly basis. The amount depends on
the standard. At present, it costs between 270 to 339 zł. per
bed (1 EURO = 4.02 zł. – rate of exchange as of 17/08/2005).
Application for accommodation in a student hall should be
submitted to the University of Silesia:

Medical treatment
All foreign students in Poland must have sufficient health insurance while studying at the University of Silesia. Insurance must
be purchased before leaving the home country or at a Polish
insurance company.
The cost of living
12
16
Students have the University Canteen at their disposal, where
they can have lunch at reduced prices. The current average
price of a two-course lunch is about 8.50 zł. Students can
also purchase a monthly meal plan. We also advise you to do
some cooking on your own. It is far more expensive to have
dinner a la carte at a restaurant. Therefore, some practice in
cooking before your departure is very useful. Prices of food,
including meat, are reasonable and stable throughout the year.
The prices of root vegetables and other kinds of vegetables and
fruit fluctuate. During the winter season, vegetables are quite
expensive. Food prices may differ from one store to another.
We suggest checking which store in your area has the most
reasonable prices. Most grocers’ shops are open 7 days a week
from early in the morning far into the night.
To give you an idea of the cost of living in Poland, a feasible
monthly budget might be as follows:
Accommodation
about 400.- zł.
Local travel
50.- zł.
Food
500.- zł.
Total
minimum about 1,000.- zł.
The approximate prices of some items are listed below:

STUDENTS’ LIFE
The academic year
The academic year is divided into two terms. The autumn
term starts on 1st of October and lasts until mid-January,
when the exam session starts. The spring term starts in mid-February and lasts until the beginning of June. There are
short breaks of about a fortnight at the end of December and
during Easter. There is practically no teaching from mid-June
to the end of September. At this time, students can take part
in summer courses.
Religion
About ninety-five percent of the population belongs to the
Roman Catholic Church. In Katowice, there are 36 Catholic
churches, including an Archdiocese Cathedral, and a number
of chapels of that faith are open for public services. Other
religions also have their places of worship: Augsburg-Evangelical Church, the Methodist Church, the Polish Church
of Christians, the Baptists, the Church of Free Christians,
the Church of Adventists of „the Seventh Day”, the Whitsuntide Church, the „Betania” community, the Commune of
Jewish Faith.
Local transportation
Public transport, including bus, tram and train, is quite good
in Upper Silesia area. Transportation within the town area is
much cheaper with a monthly ticket. Ticket prices: bus/tram
– 2,40 zł.

Taxis are not difficult to find because of the many small taxi
companies competing with each other, especially in the city
area. They are, however, far more expensive than public transportation.

background. Polish public holidays are as follows:
New Year’s Day
1 January
Easter Sunday
Easter Monday
May Day
1 May
Constitution Day
3 May
Corpus Christi
June
Feast of the Assumption
15 August
All Saints’ Day

What to do in your spare time
There is a wealth of societies and clubs engaged in arranging
everything from lectures to entertainment, e.g. music, dances,
sport and other activities.
Daily newspapers often include at least one page with ongoing activities in the town, such as cinema, theatre, concerts,
etc.
Advice and Guidance
“KATOWICE”
FOLKLORE SONG AND DANCE GROUP
Why not join the “KATOWICE” Folklore Song and Dance
Group? The group provides an excellent opportunity for all
foreigners to find out more about the culture and customs of
the Silesian region and Poland. It is also a wonderful way to
spend spare time and meet interesting people.
The “KATOWICE” Folklore Song and Dance Group was set
up in 1969 as an initiative of students of the University of
Silesia. At that time, it was the first folklore-orientated group
in the Region of Silesia. The name of the group, as well as
the repertoire, expresses the close ties with this region. Presently, the group consists of about 50 members, including the
choreographer, the director of the choir and the band. Members of the Group come from the home university and from
other Silesian academic institutions. The Group presents stylish songs and dances performed in regional costumes. Their
programme consists of a collection of folk songs, melodies
and dances prepared and arranged by Wladyslaw Byczewski.
The main sponsor and patron of the Group is the University of Silesia.
The “KATOWICE” Folklore Song and Dance Group takes
part in preparations for the International Students Folklore
Festival which is held every year in the following cities of the
Region: Katowice, Chorzów, Sosnowiec and Ogrodzieniec.
It is well-known for being unique in the field of folklore in
Europe. In 2000, the group took part in the Hanover EXPO
Exhibition. The Group has performed in many countries: Germany, Spain, Tunisia, Cyprus, Hungary, France, Russia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Moldavia, Belarus, Portugal and the USA. Recently, more exotic countries like Mexico,
Brazil, Algiers and Syria and the United Arab Emirates have
had the pleasure of welcoming them.

The Themerson Archive, which is accessible for researchers
and visitors interested in this type of collected works, is located
in the Library of the Institute of Polish Studies. The founders
of the Themerson Archive in London handed over the collection to the Faculty of Philology on November 21, 2002.
The archive material includes Mr and Mrs Themerson’s books,
their drawings, and book cover designs, manuscripts and typescripts, Gaberbocchus Press publications, foreign avant-garde
newspapers and magazines, photographs, posters and memorabilia. Despite its involvement in academic research, the collection is a source of inspiration to all who have chosen to
adopt a non-conformist, critical, and creative stance towards

in different wavebands. The images are obtained in a wavelength suited to the human eye, in near-infrared channel and
thermal-infrared channels. Climate researchers can use the
NOAA satellite data to detect changes in the atmosphere and
cloud cover. Digital satellite information may also be used for
a variety of purposes in climatological research and forecasting
global climatic changes. Satellite data help to determine the
total ozone content in the atmosphere and to monitor pollution as it is spread through smoke from fires or volcanic ash
or changes in urban heat islands.

UPPER SILESIA
The Region
Upper Silesia is the name of the region of Poland stretching
across the southern part of the country, almost in the very
centre of Europe. It has borders with the Czech Republic and
Slovakia. The main road and rail arteries linking Poland with
Europe run through the city and metropolitan area in an East-West direction, (connecting Germany with the Ukraine) and
along the North-South axis connecting Scandinavian countries
with Vienna. The Province of Silesia (Poland is divided into
16 administrative units - Provinces) produces about 15% of
Poland’s GDP and 16% of home industrial products.
Average temperature: July: 17oC; December: -2.7oC.
Average rainfall: 514 mm.
Locations above sea level: 178–504 m.
Historical background
The beginning of urban settlement in Upper Silesia dates back
to the 13th century. It is hard to believe that towns such as
Gliwice and Bytom are over 750 years old. Tarnowskie Góry
ranks among the oldest mining centres in Europe. Upper Silesia
has the richest hard coal deposits in Europe. Coal exploitation placed Upper Silesia at the top rank among coal producers in the world. With its concentration of coal mines and
various industries Upper Silesia is the most important place
for the Polish economy.
The Upper Silesia region is the homeland of many prominent people such as Nobel Prize Winners: Otto Stern, born
in Żory, awarded in 1943 for his outstanding contribution to
Physics; Kurt Adler, born in Chorzów, distinguished in 1950
for his outstanding contribution to Chemistry; Maria Göppert-Mayer, born in Katowice, who received the prize in 1963
for her outstanding contribution to Physics.
The Region is a significant centre of science, culture and education. The Province of Silesia is home to 13 universities and

institutions of higher education, over ten science and research
institutes, 44 museums, 14 theatres, 4 philharmonic orchestras and dozens of local music groups.
Katowice
Katowice is the main city of the Upper Silesia Region and the
centre of a metropolitan area of nearly 3 million inhabitants;
more than a quarter of the population of Poland lives within
an hour’s drive from Katowice. When describing Katowice –
the capital city of Upper Silesia, one cannot avoid the word
„great”. With its population of about 400,000, Katowice is
one the greatest Polish centres of economy, transport, science
and culture. The rapid development of the village of Katowice began in 1848 when the extension of the Berlin Railway to Mysłowice was implemented. The period between
the world wars was very likely the time of the region’s most
rapid development. Katowice was transformed from a provincial industrial centre of Prussia to the largest economic centre of Silesia; it became the main city of the richest region in
Poland. As it was before World War II, Katowice is now a city
where important economic decisions are made and where
good business is done.
The City of Katowice was of great importance to the former
Soviet-oriented power in Poland. During the years 1953–1956
Katowice City, on initiative of former communist regime, was
renamed Stalinogród.
The City of Katowice has a special and individual character,
due to the incorporation of the cultural and civilisation elements of the borderlands, as well as the nations of Poles, Germans, Jews and others who lived together. All of them, but to
a different degree and during different periods of time, influenced the material and spiritual values and contributed to the
development of the City.
