Ass. Prof. Katarzyna Borowska
In my scietific research , there was also the opportunity for clinical research dealing with the
role of Demodex in etiopathogenesis of rosacea. I conducted this research as an assitant at
the Department of Dermatology of the Military Institute of Health under the supervision of
Professor Dr. Stanislaw Leopold Zabielski. The dependance between the coexistence of
Demodex and rosacea is not completely clear. There is no clear accepted standard procedures
for ethiopatogenesis. According to the results of my research, since patients positively
reacted to the antiparasitic treatment, further research should be done on Demodex. This is
research is especially helpful for patients with advanced and chronic rosacea. With such
patients, this treatment should be administrated on a regular established basis. The results and
analysis were published in academic journlas or presented at academic conferences as

As an assistant in Military Institute of the Health Service in Warsaw, Department of
Dermatology Central Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of National Defence I started my
collaboration with Leszek Wdowiak, the Professor of Medicine and the chairman of Public
Health Department at Medical University in Lublin. The aim of our cooperation was the
analysis of the marketing tools in the assessment of dermatology services. Dermatological
diseases, due to their prevalence as well as social importance, are considered to be a
significant problem of public health. A correctly executed analysis and decent management
of the dermatological services sector are particularly important in the area of public health
medicine. In the same thematic group there are my works that concern the tools used in the
assessment of life quality of people with skin diseases. In order to objectify the influence of
diseases, medical questionnaires should be implemented into both clinical and ambulatory
studies. Such questionnaires in clinical practice were used to assess the quality of life among
the patients in Military Institute of the Health Service in Warsaw, Department of Dermatology
Central Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of National Defence. The results confirm that skin
diseases should be considered no only in medical aspects, but also in psychosocial. On the
basis of the collected material, several scientific publications and presentation were published
with my authorship and co-authorship.

An important element of my work was participation in research on the use of CO2 laser in
treating skin cancers Carcinoma in situ – Bowen's disease and its variety - erythroplasia of
Queyrat. The research was conducted within the framework of the project called „Early
detection and treatment of precancerous and cancerous conditions of skin (2001)” under the
supervision of Stanisław Leopold Zabielski, the Professor of Medicine. In the research I
collaborated with Adam Borzęcki, Doctor of Medicine, who is the head of a hospital ward of
the Dermatology Ward NZOZ Med-Laser in Lublin. In the research I was the co-executor.
The laser influence on the operated tissue is determined by the time effects and the
wavelenght of the laser beam, which may variously influence the tissue, depending on the
absorbency level. During the surgery, the laser beam may be absorbed, reflected or diffused
by the tissue. The curative effect is evoked only in the first one. The surgery takes place under
local anaesthetic, in the ambulatory conditions. As the academic studies suggest, the
therapeutic effect as well as the use of CO2 laser in the clinical settings depend on the size
and the location of the cutaneous condition. Basing on the previous studies it was concluded
that the CO2 laser may be safely and successfully aplied to Bowen's disease and erythroplasia
of Queyrat. The laser in an alternative to the conventional surgery methods. The patients
recover quickly. Postsurgery complications are very rare, whereas the outcomes very good.
The presentation and the study cases are presented in the following works:

Yet another undertaking I took part in was connected with conducting the mycology studies
within the framework of the project started in 2001 „The prevention of foot and nail mycosis
among of soldiers of military service”. Basing on the gathered materials, many analyses have
been performed in order to implement the mycosis prevention among soldiers. The supervisor
of the project was Stanisław Leopold Zabielski, the Professor of Medicine, the chief
Dermatology Consultant of the Polish Army and the head of Department of Dermatology
Military Institute of Health, Warsaw and I served as a coexecuter of the research. Some of the
important publications of my authorship are cited in the following positions:

In 2006 I created some review works from the area of integrin. Integrins constitute numerous
and diverse group of adhesion molecules. Their mail role is cell adhesion. The aim of the
work was to transmit and systematize integrins contribution in physiological and pathological
processes (inflammatory and cancerous). The works were created as a part of cooperation
between Chair and Department of Histology and Embryology Medical University in Lublin
and Department of Dermatology in Military Institute of Health in Central Clinical Hospital of
the Ministry of National Defence in Warsaw.

An important element of my academic performance was participation in a project designed for
the Polish Army, concenring the estimation of skin sensitivity of the Polish soldiers to broadband UVB irradiation. Stanisław Leopold Zabielski, the Professor of Medicine, was in charge
of the project, whereas I was a coordinator. I gained the experience in the area of skin
photodiagnostic when I was a coordinator of Photobiology Laboratory in Department of
Dermatology in Military Institute of Health in Central Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of
National Defence in Warsaw. There were 130 patients (soldiers) of the 5th Polish contingent
of the army (Iraq) who took part in the research. They were preparing for the peacekeeping
mission in the areas of strong UV radiation. The UV exposion may contribute to dangerous
3
and irreversible complications, such as photocarcinogenesis. The risk factors, on which the
soldiers working in countries of strong UV radiation were exposed to, were analyzed. Basing
on the gathered material, many analyses were conducted in order to determine the minimal
erythema dose (MED). The wide decomposition of MED was observed with the slip to the
higher values of MED. Among the soldiers who previously were on peacekeeping missions in
the areas of high UV radiation, the higher MED values were observed in comparison to the
other participants not staying in such climate zones. These results are particularly important to
the army when it comes to preventive actions and the further strategy. Conducting the
research in order to estimate MED on numerous groups (soldiers) gave the opportunity for
new results, not described before. The results of the analyses were published in Lekarz
Wojskowy and presented as a presentation during Young Dermatologists Forum.

My research includes original work about the 2-chlorodeoxyadenozyny (2CDA). 2CDA is a
purine analoge used in treating Hairy Cell Leukemia (HLD) and Sclerosis Muliplex (SM).
The aim of study was to assess histomorphologically the skin of experimantal animals that
were given 2CDA. The drug was administered subcutaneously. There were two experimental
groups and one control group. In the first experimental group, the study material in the form
of a full thickness skin sample was taken 24 hours after the last 2CDA dose. In order to
evaluate the regeneration abilities of the skin, the study material was taken from the second
group of experimental animals 4 weeks after the last dose fo the drug was administered.
Subcutaneous administration of 2CDA to the first group of experimental animals resulted in
histological changes in the material studied. The findings obtained from skin tests in the
second experimental group proved that the skin morphology had not returned to the basaline
condition and the further histological changed had occurred.
The results were published in the Polish Journal of Environmental Studies and presented at
the Second International Scientific Symposium in Kazimierz Dolny.

Taking advantage of my experience in the area of photodermatology and photobiology and
histology, I started my cooperation with various scientific institutions. Collaborative
publications and research topics are the effects of this cooperation. Working with Chair and
Department of Histology and Embriology, Center for Biostructure, Medical University of
Warsaw I was the coauthor of the review paper concerning the influence of UV radiation on
skin as well as I participated in oroginal research concerning the influence of statins on
melanogenesis. The influence of fluvastatin on the process of melanin synthesis as a
protective activity against UV radiation was analyzed.
Fluvastatin inhibit cholesterol synthesis by reducing 3-hydroxy-3-glutaryl-coenzyme a
(HMG-CoA) reductase activity. The role of fluvastatin was examined in potential modulation
of thyrosinase (key enzyme of melanogenesis) synthesis. All experiments were performed
using B16F10 melanoma cells. Cells were irradiated 100mJ/cm². In the current study we show
that fluvastatin increases tyrosinase synthesis induced by UVB irradiation of B16F10
melanoma cells. According to the above results, fluvastatin treatment may potentially increase
melanin synthesis and skin protection against UV irradiation.
In 2009 the results were published in Folia Histochemica et Cytobiologica, and on October
24th 2001 the work was honoured by the Rector of Medical University of Warsaw Marek
Krawczyk, The Professor of Medicine. The team prize of the 3rd degree was awarded.
