ISSN 1731-2337 Informator CZĘSTOCHOWA TOURIST GUIDE Częstochowa is one of the main pilgrimage centers of the world, with a huge cultural and national heritage. It boasts a number of valuable monuments, at the same time being a contemporary city with wide infrastructure and a range of social and economic facilities. Altogether there are nine universities and colleges with 40 thousand students here. Częstochowa was the first city in Poland to be awarded the Grand Prix de Europe. Its cultural life derives from an ample calendar of traditional and cultural events: International Festival of Sacred Music “Gaude Mater”, Triennale of Sacred Art “Sacrum”, Bronisław Huberman Festival, Hot Jazz Spring Festival and Harvest Home of Jasna Góra with the European Days of Folk Culture – these are merely the most significant events. Time spent in Częstochowa will never be forgotten. One can discover here the unique atmosphere of the Holy Virgin Mary Avenue, the scenic streets surrounding the Paulite Monastery, as well as monuments, museums and exhibition galleries. Everyone is invited and will be welcome with traditional Częstochowa hospitality. i Barbary SŁ O WAC K A ZA K 18 IEGO Stary Rynek Plac Papieża Jana Pawła II NA NADRZECZ 13 CAR SKA NADRZE CZNA MIRO WSKA GAR N 11 KRAKOWSKA L NA KOZIA WARS ZAWS KA 10 Plac Daszyńskiego PIŁSUDSKIEGO PKP SENATORSKA JOSELEWICZA WILSONA 9 CKA STRAŻA St. Sigismund’s Church 12 Archikatedra Św. Archicathedral of the Holy Family St. Andrew and Barbara’s Church Jasna Góra 1 The Paulite Monastery at Jasna Góra is one of the main pilgrimage centers of the world. Every year about 4-5 millions of pilgrims come to the Miraculous Picture of Our Lady, the icon of Black Madonna, in both difficult and joyful moments of their lives to express their thankfulness, wishes and prayers. The Monastery complex which has existed for five centuries holds a great number of buildings and mementos important for Poland in its fortress. It is a monumental object of the highest class and a symbol of faith of contemporary Christian world. 7 Tenements’ Street (Ulica 7 Kamienic) 2 The 7 Tenements’ Street closes Jasna Góra hill from the south, running along the borders of Stanisław Staszic Park. Its name comes from seven two-storey 19th century tenements. Parks surrounding Jasna Góra 3 In 1828 the slopes of Jasna Góra hill were covered with town gardens (nowadays Stanisław Staszic Park and 3rd May Park) separated by Henryk Sienkiewicz Avenue. In Stanisław Staszic Park one can see buildings of the Country Exhibition of Industry and Agriculture which was held in 1909. St. Andrew and Barbara’s Church 4 The church was built in the years 1637-1642 in the baroque style with some traces of the Gothic. Behind the church there is St. Barbara’s chapel with its miraculous spring. The Holy Virgin Mary Avenue 5 (Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny) It is Częstochowa’s most representative street and at the same time one of the most interesting town planning solutions in Europe. In 1826 the Administrative Council of Polish Kingdom confirmed the joining of Old and New Częstochowa, creating a homogenous town organism based on a project of an army engineer Jan Bernhard. This nearly two-kilometer long road is currently the main pilgrimage route leading from the Old Town to the Jasna Góra Monastery. It is surrounded mostly by charming neo-classic tenements. 6 Church of the Holy Name of Mary It was built together with the monastery for Mariawitki sisters in the years 1859-1862. This neo-Gothic church, monastic at first, today is a rector’s church. 7 Town Hall – Częstochowa Museum It is a two-storey neo-classic building raised in the years 18281836 between Old and New Częstochowa as they were joined into one town. Since 1967 it has been the seat of Częstochowa Museum. 8 St. Jacob’s Church One of the prettiest sanctuaries of Częstochowa (a former Orthodox church) situated at Władysław Biegański Square, opposite the Town Hall. On its walls the Stations of the Cross are painted in the Byzantium style. Franke’s House 9 This eclectic tenement called Franke’s House was modelled on the urban architecture of Berlin and Vienna. For many years it has combined living, commercial and service functions. Ignacy Daszyński Square 10 The square is situated opposite St. Sigismund’s Church. In the background, at the entrance into Krakowska street the Archcathedral of the Holy Family can be seen. St. Sigismund’s Church 11 The three-aisle 14th century church indicates the Eastern end of the Avenue (at Ignacy Daszyński Square). An extended presbytery is an older part of the sanctuary there are preserved Gothic elements here. After the reconstruction in the 18th century the church received its present baroque form and interior decorations. Archicathedral of the Holy Family 12 This neo-Gothic church of the beginning of the 20th century belongs to the biggest churches in Poland. It is situated in the Square of John Paul II. The three-aisle building of basilica form has two turrets in the front elevation and a signature pinnnacle. It is 100 meters long. Old Market Square (15th-19th centuries) 13 The Old Market Square was the central point of the former town – Old Częstochowa. In the Middle Ages many trade routes crossed here. In the 15th-19th centuries there was a town hall in the square, which was burnt in 1812 (the actual placement of the town hall is indicated by the line of its foundations on the square’s surface). The plan of the northern and eastern side of the square is preserved. Especially worth noticing are the 18th century tenements number 21 and 23 as well as a tenement built in the beginning of the 20th century number 14, and a 17th century building of a former inn (at present 4 Mirowska St.). The Paulite Monastery Museums at Jasna Góra The collections stored in the Monastery constitute a great 1 national heritage which may be seen as a journey through important events in the history of Poland and the possibility of learning how the history of the church is intertwined with the national history. You can see the collections while visiting the following: Treasury – contains the most precious votives offered throughout centuries in front of the Miraculous Picture of Our Lady. The Jasna Góra Arsenal – it is the second part of the Treasury whose thematically arranged collections are connected with arms and defence. The 600th Anniversary Museum – presents an exhibition thematically divided into three parts: the history of the Monastery, the cult of the Miraculous Picture of Our Lady , artisanship and musical instruments. Library – in the old library a collection of approx. 8 thousand old prints and medieval illuminated manuscripts are kept, including unique specimens of the Jagiellonian royal collections. The Jasna Góra Information Centre: tel. 377 74 08, www.jasnagora.pl Częstochowa Archdiocese Museum 14 Częstochowa, ul. św. Barbary 41 tel. (034) 368 33 61, Tuesday – Saturday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The collections of the Museum are monuments of sacred art from Częstochowa and its region, which bear cultural and historical value as well as artistic one. Sacred sculptures are presented here – the oldest date back to the 15th century, and painting compositions – the majority are paintings presenting saints who are closely related to the Polish religious spirits. An interesting part of the collection is a set of coins and medals issued on the occasion of various religious events, illustrating in some way the church history. Częstochowa Museum 7 Częstochowa, Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny 45 A tel. (034) 360 56 31, www.mcz.net-galeria.art.pl Tuesday – Sunday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Museum keeps the record of the regional heritage referring to Częstochowa as well as whole Poland. It holds magnificent collections of Polish and regional paintings among which one can find those by: Jacek Malczewski, Wojciech Weiss, Jan Cybis, Teodor Axentowicz and an abundance of prints representative for Polish art. Concerning ethnography, there is a noticeable collection of Polish art of religious cult and regional folk culture representatives including a unique collection of folk sculpture. The Museum collections include sets of arms, coins and medals (history); a significant set of insects (nature); and a special and unique exhibition in the Archeological Reservation showing a part of cemetery dated to the period called Lusitian culture. The Museum exhibits its possessions in four buildings: Town Hall Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny 45 Exhibition Pavilion Park im. Staszica Archeological Reservation ul. Ogrodowa 68 Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. tel. (034) 324 26 26, e-mail: [email protected] The monumental manufacturing line from the 30-ties of the previous century still in operation along with the 19th century factory buildings make the Museum a genuine rarity on the European scale. The Museum functions in a working factory which was built in 1882. It allows the visitors to travel in time and transfer themselves to the period between WW I and WW II as well as enter the reality of industry moved by steam. Old-fashioned machinery commands everybody’s attention and at the same time gives any newcomer a broader view on what the matches production process looked like in remote times of steam era.
