AGH UST and the Maritime University of Szczecin
launch a joint programme of studies
On Thursday, 29 April, the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow and the Maritime
University of Szczecin signed an agreement initiating the launch of a joint programme of postgraduate
studies.
The agreement between the universities will find its practical application at the Faculty of Maritime
Engineering at the Maritime University of Szczecin and the Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas at the AGH
University of Science and Technology in Krakow. The subject of the agreement is the launch of a joint
postgraduate course: "LNG Transportation and Operation of Terminals". The enrolment for the studies
will begin in the summer term of the academic year 2010/2011. The location of classes and lectures will be
the Faculty of Maritime Engineering at the Maritime University of Szczecin and the Faculty of Drilling, Oil
and Gas at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow (AGH UST: away lectures and
classes).
Signing the agreement between the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow and the Maritime
University of Szczecin is a result of collaboration of the two universities with the company Polskie LNG
within the framework of the construction project of a Liquefied Natural Gas terminal in Świnoujście.
Polskie LNG S.A. is a special purpose entity established to construct and operate the Liquefied Natural Gas
terminal in Świnoujście. Polskie LNG S.A. was set up in 2007 as part of the strategy of diversification of gas
supplies to Poland. It is owned by the Gas Transmission Operator GAZ-SYSTEM S.A. - a company of the
State Treasury. Building the LNG terminal has been recognised by the Polish Government as a strategic
investment for the energy security of the country. The LNG terminal will be built in Świnoujście, on the area
intended for the harbour development. It will be able to receive 5 bn m3 of gas annually, with a possibility of
further extension to 7.5 bn m3. The building of the LNG terminal in Świnoujście is the first investment of this
kind not only in Poland, but also in this part of Europe. The construction works are planned to commence in
the second half of 2010, and its completion has been scheduled on 30 June, 2014.
Ensuring highly-qualified staff for all parts of the gas port will be possible due to the establishment of the
LNG European Training Centre in Szczecin and Świnoujście. It will be the first and only institution in
East-Central Europe which will educate specialists of qualifications unique on a world scale.
The Centre, co-financed by the European Union, will be equipped with the latest simulators - oil well surface
installations modelling working conditions in the gas port and on supply vessels. Together with Polskie LNG
S.A., the co-establishers of the Centre are two Polish universities: the Maritime University of Szczecin and the
AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow.
