Berlin to the West Pomeranian coast, and then
on to Scandinavia. In addition, it is also possible
to sail along the Western Odra to the Szczecin lagoon through a thirty kilometer journey along
the German border and the central and northern
districts of Szczecin, or else along the Regalica
through Gryfino and Lake Dąbie. The Odra is extremely wide in many places (over 250 meters) and
the winds often create ideal conditions for sailing.
Along this route, you will find moorings in Ognica,
Widuchowa and Gryfino, as well as a marina in
Szczecin Gocław. A new yacht harbor is currently
being built on Grodzka island in Szczecin, directly
opposite Wały Chrobrego.
Fishing
Both arms of the Odra, as well as the ‘Międzyodrze’
area, are home to many species of fish. If you want
to catch bream, ide, asp, and chub it is best to
choose the nearby Ognica and Widuchowa. Good
quality eels can be caught around Kostrzyn, Siekierki and Stara Rudnica.
A great many zander sometimes appear in the
‘Międzyodrze’ area. In these peaceful waters, it is
also possible to catch golden carp, tench and ordinary carp. You can also find fish which prefer currents, such as asp and chub.
The area close to the Dolna Odra power plant
in Gryfino has become famous among fishermen
in Poland, because of the warm channel of water
that is pumped from it into the Odra. This warm
water, which never freezes, has enabled fish to
grow to an exceptional size. A Polish record-breaking perch was caught here, which weighed 2.69
kilograms, and was fifty centimeters long. It is also
possible to catch large carp, catfish, zander, pike
and Prussian carp here. You may also come across
a large number of exotic sun bass from the Mississippi Delta. There have also been reports of piranha. These last two mentioned species have also
been spotted in a second warm water channel in
Szczecin, in the Pomorzany district.
In the ‘Międzyodrze’, close to the A6 motorway,
you can find the unusual Lake Samotne (Lonely
Lake), which is excellent for diving on account of
its eighteen meter depth.
Pleasure cruises along the Odra and around the
seaport are a great attraction for tourists. These start
from Wały Chrobrego in Szczecin. It is also possible
to travel from there to Świnoujście by hydrofoil.
