June 19, 2016 Holy Cross Church Dear Parishioners: 3 In response to the article printed in the Daily News on June 7, 2016, Bishop DiMarzio has issued the attached letter which he asks parishes in your area to publish in the bulletins. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The New York Daily News has published an article in today's paper claiming that I attempted to bribe an elected official several years ago in order to advance the political agenda of the Catholic Church. I want you to know that this very serious accusation against me is patently false. This is the latest and perhaps most offensive in a series of irresponsible and inaccurate reports published by the Daily News. Assembly Member Marge Markey told the Daily News that in a meeting in 2010 I offered her $5,000 to drop her push to reform New York State's statute of limitations for crimes of sexual abuse against minors. The meeting Ms. Markey is referring to actually took place in 2007. It took place at our former Chancery located at 75 Greene Avenue, not Bishop Ford High School as was claimed. Present in that meeting was myself, Assembly Member Markey, Monsignor Kieran Harrington, Assembly Member Joseph Lentol, Assembly Member Vito Lopez, Richard Barnes who is executive director of the NYS Catholic Conference, and Sister Ellen Patricia Finn, OP, who at the time was the Victim's Assistance Coordinator for the Diocese of Brooklyn. The meeting was arranged to discuss policy implications of Ms. Markey's proposed legislation. Immediately following this broader meeting, I met separately with Assembly Member Markey and Sister Ellen Patricia to discuss a matter deeply personal to Ms. Markey. In that meeting I spoke of the counseling services and support the Church offers to victims of abuse without any conditions. There was absolutely no offer of money nor a quid pro quo. While the Daily News failed its ethical responsibility to contact Sister Finn and to otherwise fact-check this story before printing it, Sister Finn provided our diocesan lawyer with a statement. Sister Ellen Patricia is no longer employed by the Diocese of Brooklyn, nor under the authority of the Bishop. She is a dedicated victim's advocate. She has no reason to support my story other than a commitment to the truth. Sister Ellen Patricia, the only other person present in that meeting, remembers the conversation from 9 years ago just as I do; there was absolutely no offer of money made. Sister has provided our diocesan attorney with a statement. Her recollection supports my memory. The Daily News chose to put one person’s unsubstantiated accusation on its front page, putting the sale of newspapers, and the political agenda of its editors above journalistic integrity. In doing so they have impugned my character and slandered my name as Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn. I have written a letter to Ms. Markey demanding a retraction of her false and defamatory charge of bribery. Ironically, by turning a conversation from 9 years ago into front page "news" and reporting it with blatant inaccuracy, the New York Daily News serves to demonstrate why statutes of limitations exist in our justice system. Memories fade, witnesses die, and evidence gets lost. As Bishop of the Diocese, I take these matters very seriously. My concern is for the souls of those who have suffered from abuse. Without any condition, counseling and support services is offered. I would never refuse to meet with anyone who comes forward with an allegation of abuse, if they wish to meet with me, along with the Victims Assistance Coordinator. Asking for your prayers for our Diocese and for me during this challenging time, as I remember you in mine, I am Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Ph.D., D.D. Bishop of Brooklyn June 19, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR Holy Cross Church FATHERS’ DAY May the Lord grant his blessings of health and happiness to our fathers who are living and the joy and peace of his eternal Kingdom to our fathers who have died. FATHER’ S DAY The Father’s Day novena of Masses begins on Father’s Day, June 19th. A Mass will be offered every day for nine days for all of our fathers living and deceased whose names we will have received. The cards for this purpose may be found on the tables at the back of church. They include the gift card as well as the listing of the intentions. There are also simple memorial envelopes available. (If your father is deceased, rather than use the gift card kindly use the simple memorial listing envelope.) The large and small listing envelopes may be returned in the collection basket during Mass or at the Rectory Office. MARIAN PILGRIMAGE TO WASHINGTON, D.C. The Diocese has reserved Saturday, October 29 for the 2016 Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. This pilgrimage to the Marian Shrine offers worshippers from our Diocese a wonderful opportunity to gather in shared worship, reconciliation and companionship with Bishop DiMarzio and with parishioners from across the Diocese within a day’s journey from our homes. Cost per person: $52. For more information, please call the Holy Cross Rectory: 718-894-1387. Religious Education –Teachers We are grateful for the work that our religion teachers do every Saturday morning. They are generous with their time and talents. We are in need of teachers for next year. If you are interested in volunteering your time as a catechist, please call the rectory and leave your name and telephone number for Mrs. Neubauer. 4 BAPTISMAL CLASS TUESDAY, July 5 7:30 PM English 8:00 PM Polish Because of the Independence Day, Baptismal instructions for this month will take place on Tuesday, July 5th. We ask that all families and/or godparents who need to attend Baptismal instructions, should call the rectory to register that they will attend. This will make it easier to prepare enough chairs for everyone. During the summer, we would encourage our parish families to suggest to their children who are on vacation that a very good thing to do would be to stop by for morning Mass during the week. It is very easy to be “bored” and not bother with anything. Rather than be just a cure for boredom, daily Mass could be the means of changing our children’s lives for the better. This is nothing new as far as we are concerned, but it is an idea which is terribly and sorely neglected. Likewise, parents might look at their children and see if there might be a vocation to the priesthood or the religious life in their hearts. The quiet of summer is an excellent time to give children some of the books we read as youngsters to inspire them to live lives of simple piety. The various lives of the saints we treasured and books with a definite religious flavor should be shared with them. If anyone wants some suggestions on good books, we will gladly pass them on. PRZYGOTOWANIE DO CHRZTU 5 WTOREK, 5 lipca godz.
