ADVENT DAYS OF RFLECTION
Please join our parish Advent Retreat given by Rev. Andrew Rosiak, a Pallotin missionary stationed in St. Lucia,
West Indies in the second week of Advent. Father Andrew
will join us for Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on
Monday, December 8th at the 9:00AM & 7:30PM Masses.
He will lead us into a retreat on Tuesday and Wednesday,
December 9th and 10th at 9:00AM Mass followed by a reflection at St. Joseph’s Center.
ADVENT REFLECTION
On Monday, December 15th, at 7:30PM in the rectory, we
will view the first two episodes of Fr. Robert Barron's video
Priest, Prophet, King. Through this presentation, you will
better understand Jesus, become more familiar with Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic and kingly

BETHLEHEM CHRISTIAN FAMILIES
Next weekend, December 13th & 14th, representatives of
the Bethlehem families will visit St. Rose of Lima selling
crucifixes, religious art work, and rosaries made of olive
wood, which is native to Israel and Bethlehem. Please consider these for yourself, or as a Christmas gift, while supporting the efforts of these families in the Holy Land.
“MESSIAH” AT CO-CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOSEPH
The Metro Chamber Orchestra and Chorus will present
selections from “Messiah”, by George Frederick Handel, on
Friday, December 12th at 8:00PM, and Sunday, December
13th at 3:30PM. Admission is FREE, and offering is encouraged. The Co-Cathedral is located at 856 Pacific St. between

PILGRIMAGE TO PERU
There is information regarding the August 2015 St. Rose

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
FEAST OF FAITH
Advent calendars appear now in many homes, and new
-fangled formats are even available on line. Children have
fun opening the doors and windows keyed to the days
counting down to Christmas. Behind each door is a
picture related to the Christmas mystery, perhaps a
scripture verse or saying, but more and more these days
something totally unconnected to religious life, like a
small toy or a chocolate treat, appears instead. The
Advent calendar is not very old as traditions go. We can
trace it back to German-speaking Christians, both
Protestant and Catholic. Lutherans might have originated
the custom by placing chalk marks on doors starting
December 1, lighting candles every day, or placing a new
religious picture on the wall each day during Advent. The
oldest known hand-made calendar goes back to 1851, and
the first printed ones appeared in 1908 in Germany with
Bible verses behind the doors. By far the most interesting
calendar is a building, the town hall (Rathaus) of
Gengenbach in Germany’s Black Forest. Every year the
townspeople invite an illustrator of children’s books to
create twenty-four paintings or motifs for each of the
twenty-four main windows of the building. Every night
the people gather to see a new window opened and
illuminated.
Very few commercial Advent calendars pay much
attention to the core values of our liturgical calendar: the
pivotal place of Sunday, the importance of Advent feasts
like Saint Lucy and Saint Nicholas, and the clear shift in
tone on December 17 from Advent longing and
preparation toward imminent hope in Christ’s coming.
That kind of creativity is left up to you!
Watching for Christ’s Coming
In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of
Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to
celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas.
Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation
for the future. Memory meets action.
In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the
Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disciples, “Never forget
what I did for you.” Instead, he said, “Do this in
remembrance of me.” He calls us to remember by doing,
to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the
Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is
as present in our midst as he was in that upper room,
breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new
kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the
heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for
there, “celebration is wholly communion and
feast” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here,
things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of
the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we
truly participate in the heavenly liturgy. The Mass is our
foretaste of the joys of heaven.

Druga Niedziela Adwentu 2014
Umiłowani, niech to jedno nie będzie dla was tajne, że
jeden dzień u Pana jest jak tysiąc lat, a tysiąc lat jak jeden
dzień. Nie zwleka Pan z wypełnieniem obietnicy - bo
niektórzy są przekonani, że Pan zwleka - ale On jest
cierpliwy w stosunku do was. Nie chce bowiem
niektórych zgubić, ale wszystkich doprowadzić do
nawrócenia. Jak złodziej zaś przyjdzie dzień Pański, w
którym niebo ze świstem przeminie, gwiazdy się w ogniu
rozsypią, a ziemia i dzieła na niej zostaną znalezione.
Skoro to wszystko w ten sposób ulegnie zagładzie, to
jakimi winniście być wy w świętym postępowaniu i
pobożności, gdy oczekujecie i staracie się przyśpieszyć
przyjście dnia Bożego, który sprawi, że niebo zapalone
pójdzie na zagładę, a gwiazdy w ogniu się rozsypią.
Oczekujemy jednak, według obietnicy, nowego nieba i
nowej ziemi, w których będzie mieszkała sprawiedliwość.
Dlatego, umiłowani, oczekując tego, starajcie się, aby /
On/ was zastał bez plamy i skazy - w pokoju.

Początek Ewangelii o Jezusie Chrystusie, Synu
Bożym. Jak jest napisane u proroka Izajasza: Oto Ja
posyłam wysłańca mego przed Tobą; on przygotuje drogę
Twoją. Głos wołającego na pustyni: Przygotujcie drogę
Panu, Jemu prostujcie ścieżki. Wystąpił Jan Chrzciciel na
pustyni i głosił chrzest nawrócenia na odpuszczenie
grzechów. Ciągnęła do niego cała judzka kraina oraz
wszyscy mieszkańcy Jerozolimy i przyjmowali od niego
chrzest w rzece Jordan, wyznając /przy tym/ swe grzechy.
Jan nosił odzienie z sierści wielbłądziej i pas skórzany
około bioder, a żywił się szarańczą i miodem leśnym. I
tak głosił: Idzie za mną mocniejszy ode mnie, a ja nie
jestem godzien, aby się schylić i rozwiązać rzemyk u Jego
sandałów. Ja chrzciłem was wodą, On zaś chrzcić was
będzie Duchem Świętym.

REFLEKSJA...
Św. Jan Chrzciciel to jedna z najważniejszych postaci
biblijnych w czasie Adwentu. Wypełnił on bardzo
szczególną misję przygotowania Izraela na pierwsze
przyjście Syna Bożego na ziemię. Dzisiaj natomiast jego
słowa pobudzają nas do czujności w oczekiwaniu na
pełne objawienie królestwa Bożego podczas powtórnego
przyjścia Pana. Wezwanie do nawrócenia nie ma w nas
budzić lęku – Bóg nie jest tyranem, który chciałby nam
w czymś zagrozić lub pozbawić życiowych radości.
Przeciwnie, dzisiejsze słowo objawia Boga jako Tego,
który jest łagodnym pasterzem owiec i którego przyjście
niesie pocieszenie udręczonym. Nawrócenie oznacza
przygotowanie na przyjęcie w swoim sercu Boga, który
wyzwala nas od wszelkiego fałszu i leczy z
wewnętrznego rozdarcia, będącego następstwem
grzechu.

Tanto Isaías como Pedro tenían la tarea de consolar y
animar a sus comunidades durante épocas de exilio. El de
los israelitas era un exilio geográfico, apartados de Israel;
para ellos, en efecto, era lo mismo que estar exilados de
su Dios. Los primeros cristianos, seguido de la
Resurrección, anticipaban una vuelta inmediata de Cristo
en su gloria; también ellos se sentían “en exilio” cuando
la demora de la Segunda Venida se hacía cada vez más
larga. Todos los cuatro autores de las Escrituras de hoy
‑Isaías, el salmista, Pedro y Marcos‑ se apresuran a
ayudarnos a ver las cosas desde el punto de vista de Dios,
no el nuestro. Ellos quieren que sepamos que en realidad
nunca podemos estar exilados de Dios, o de Dios-entrenosotros, ya que sabemos que cuando se congregan los
fieles, Cristo está presente en medio de ellos. En vez, se
nos anima hoy a hacer lo que podamos de nuestra parte,
para acortar el tiempo del exilio: arrepentirnos de nuestros
pecados, volver nuestra vida al Señor, vivir como
personas que buscan la llegada del día del Señor, cuando
“La misericordia y la fidelidad se encuentran, la justicia y
la paz se besan” (Salmo 85 [84]:11).
