ABOUT LOCATION
Białe morza ('white seas') - Sodium Settling Tanks Solvay – post-industrial grounds of Krakowskie Zakłady Sodowe Solvay
(the Solvay Sodium Plant in Kraków), located on the border between Borek Fałęcki and Łagiewniki in the 9th District of
Kraków. The settling tanks were used to store the production waste from the plant. After closing down the plant in 1989, the
area of the settling tanks has become a characteristic element of the district – it is a very popular area for walks and is a
unique oasis of greenery among the surrounding residential estates. The settling tanks resemble now steep hills. As the result
of ground recultivation and partial forestation, over 30 ha of green belt has been created here. Wilga River cuts through the
settling tanks from the South to the North. A footpath connects the nearby housing estates (Wola Duchacka, Kurdwanów
Nowy) with the Zakopianka Shopping Centre. The following distinctive objects are located in the area: a steel bridge on Wilga
River, the bridgehead of bridge the dismantled during the liquidation of the Sodium Plant located on the back access road to
the Zakopianka Shopping Centre; an 8-meter high metal cross dedicated to John Paul II.
Currently (as of August 2014), John Paul II Centre „Have Not Fear!” is being constructed.
