Jesus wanted on the web Introduction Wprowadzenie th June 17 , 2016 17 czerwca 2016 Wprowadzenie Introduction This document is a collective bilingual record of my freeform comments concerning personal subjects as well as those closely tied to the publication. It isn’t intended for print. What is more, its text should not be copied and the document should not be distributed otherwise than by providing a link to its location on the server where it will be updated. Its formula is open. However, I don’t foresee any great literary creativity or superhuman tasks here – it will contain rather brief and succinct notes of an investigator. So far its body consists of personal reflections posted in the form of posts on Facebook and a concocted set of reasonable questions that nobody has ever asked me and that have found its place in the Smashwords publishing interface. My views aren’t worth much even in my eyes, so in general I don’t try too hard to display them, if only not to bother the Reader with trifles. What has a much higher price is my will, so I would like to ask those who value the access to reliable, invigorating sources of life and truth for mutuality, that is for not bothering me in matters that are utterly meaningless in the scale of eternity. In the footer of the document, I have placed the current links to the bookshop shelves of the most important distributors, where the English translation of the book Jezus poszukiwany [Jesus Wanted] can be found in paper and electronic versions. Paweł Zelwan Booklocker Barnes & Noble –1– Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Vainglory Próżnostka June 1998 Vainglory czerwiec 1998 Próżnostka . . . Many letters were left after Him, written with the shaking hands of those rejected by the world; many voices breaking in mute anguish, which were carefully placed in a memorial book, full of strange words and events. It was sealed and closed, even though its reticent Author had a lot more to say, after which people lived unhappily ever after, because they forgot what the fathers of faith were reminding them of with their unshakable presence – that in order to have, one has to ask and know whom one is asking. That when their own eye disturbs them and they can’t look at the Lord’s saints, they’d better pluck it out than if they were to make hundreds of their gold, silver, wood and paper images and bow down to them, because they spoke with the dragon’s language of learned perversity inspiring respect and admiration for the grace and wisdom which they had earned themselves, and not for the one they wouldn’t have earned with any of their lordly judgments. ... But God – taking pity on his people more than once and seeing how the name of the Holy One is being desecrated by self-confident auxiliary prosecutors who explain to everyone they meet that he has what he wanted – decided to cut short the rumors saying that He himself is a dimwit and a loser, and that He loved the wise. So, in spite of everybody, he sent a fool and a loafer. This one didn’t know who he was, why he went and who it was who told him, Go, I’m sending you. He thought for a while, looked around whether no one else heard it and thought that probably there isn’t around him anyone who would know that, but because he read about a couple of people who probably knew who it could be, and they walked with a certain one who had died a long time ago and rose from the dead, and then gave something good before he was taken to where he came from, so he also asked for the same and received it. But he didn’t know what it was. Booklocker Barnes & Noble –2– Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Vainglory Próżnostka And then he didn’t have enough – all the time something wasn’t right inside him with what he knew. So he thought that maybe that big Man didn’t tell the whole truth or hid it. But if so, He certainly isn’t like a small man who is afraid and this is why he is hiding, pretending to be different than he is, but He is waiting for something, because great ones are able to wait just like those from the market who waited almost until sunset, because no one wanted to pay for them. Because the big Man has nothing to fear, so for sure He simple is who He is, He is only waiting for someone like him. But at the very next moment it seemed to him that he is already waiting too long and probably he will soon die of longing (a great hole that is in him), so he doesn’t have as much time as the big Man, and he would like to meet Him right away, but he doesn’t know how, for he is only a small man who wants to meet the big one. And, after all, the big man may not want that – and that’s the whole trouble. But he needs Him very much, because something inside him hurts really bad and he cries without a reason, even though he is a man, and he didn’t see men crying so often. And when he was sniveling and complaining so sorely, it appeared to him that his thoughts are not worth much, even though he himself values them so much – no one would give one red cent for them, and rightly so; and that he has nothing whatsoever that would be worth anything. He only has a body – he hasn’t managed to get rid of it – and that something inside, but it isn’t known whether it’s life or something completely opposite. And when everything got accurately mixed up to him, he only thought (because he thought a whole lot, but he didn’t have reason) that the one who sent him must know something about him if he sent him. And even though he himself doesn’t know what he’s doing, because he has no reason, the big one knows what he’s doing, because he has reason. So he got a little angry at the big one, that he’s not telling him anything, but just a little, because he had very little strength in him anyway, and then he became completely weak and didn’t think anything, he only wanted to disappear from this earth where everything weighs him down so much and there is no hope. –3– Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Vainglory Próżnostka And then someone took him very high and very lightly, as if he didn’t weigh anything, and he told him in one moment that He is the big one, that He knows him and knows who he is, because He created him, like He created many things that He showed him in visions and sounds, but that He has a problem (big ones also have problems and the small one knew that, because he wasn’t that stupid), because no one wants to know Him and everybody holds Him for someone else than He is, and that’s not good, because He decided to destroy the earth, sun and stars, and even people, because they talk bad about Him influenced by an evil and ungrateful son who pulls the wool over everyone’s eyes. But He would like to save at least those who don’t say such lofty nonsense about his beloved Son as the others do. He just doesn’t know how to speak to their hearts so that they would know how haughty and unfaithful they are, because only a man like his Son can do this, like the apostles. But the enraptured duffer knew very well (because only close to a really big one the small one really knows that he’s small) that he isn’t like the Lord Jesus at all – more like that terrible and perverse ingrate, so he was very ashamed, and then he promised that he will do an excellent job, only that this someone wouldn’t be so angry anymore at his terrible doggedness towards Him and obstinacy, because he wouldn’t like to leave more on earth than this useless body. This someone was surely God, because He was quite unlike everything that can be found, painted and described, maybe with the exception of the words of those people that he saw in a thick book. For sure nobody would be able to know Him if He didn’t want it, and this small man quickly understood that the worst that can happen to people like him is exactly that – that they won’t be able to know Him, looking at his crooked likeness with the eyes of that ugly slyboots who cares about their life for entirely different reasons than the Father who doesn’t like to repeat himself. Booklocker Barnes & Noble –4– Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Vainglory Próżnostka It also seemed to him that everybody must be very fierce, almost like he himself until recently, since God himself had to turn away from them in such a way that they don’t know who He is. So He felt a little sorry for them (just a little, only as much as it takes to forgive those who trespassed against him and as much as it takes for them to know it), just like God had pity on his misery, and he asked Him to hold back yet a little more and allow him to tell about what he saw and heard, so that at least some would see the light, and not the advertisement, for which He is angry at them. And God knew that he would ask Him exactly for this, and not something else (for God foresaw everything right – altogether unlike people). For God is very clever and He can do such things that no one can do, so that those who know Him could praise Him for his righteousness and goodness, and faithfulness. For He isn’t evil and isn’t indebted with people, but the other way round – they are the ones who are evil and immodest, who deface and lacerate their own bodies, dress like bogeys in long, strange dresses, like some ghosts, in order to stupefy others with their hypocrisy and magic, for which they even demand to be paid. Or in reverse, they organize weird and odious orgies celebrating the scoundrel hateful to Jesus, while hypocritically pretending that no one is paying them for that, as if the very thought of employment with the Holy One would offend them. So He leaves them to themselves, because after all one doesn’t extinguish smoldering linen – he isn’t a fireman running to the aid of poor and innocent humanity, but a serious big Man, who wonders at its madness and He doesn’t feel like joking when others prefer another god and don’t want to listen to Him in order to live. . . Booklocker Barnes & Noble (fragment odsłony nieopublikowanego opowiadania Bojaźń i wiara) –5– Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Labor code February 28 th Kodeks pracy 28 lutego 2002 , 2002 Kodeks pracy Labor code The opportunities presented to a man by each ministry are generally strictly limited to the scope of competences and authorizations given to the servant – if his principal cares about the authentication of the sources he is using and to which he is directing the intent servient towards his will. The effectiveness of service depends in a directly proportional manner on the awareness of these limitations. On nothing else. It is important for the Reader to be willing to take into account the absolute legitimacy of this pronouncement, for it results from commonsense intuitions that are available to him. According to those intuitions, the actual servitude of the will can be assessed exclusively based on the evidence of its submissiveness towards the intentions and actions of the principal. The king’s friend, and even a less expressive personage, will easily discredit the value of a ministry that seems royal but isn’t. And the other way round – he will deem even the most mangled scrap of paper worthy of his attention if he notices on it the royal stamp that he knows so well. The enforcement of rights, also royal ones, is usually dealt with by offices whose task is to worthily represent the most vital interests of the authority that created them. Worthy means not infringing upon the prime determinants of the legislative body. A ruling of the controlling body stating such infringement should possess the quality of authoritativeness in the judgment over the phenomena that belie the will of the authority, if it’s a genuine authority. All this is said by way of a preliminary remark to a memorandum the goal of which is to shed light on the practical aspect of the prerogatives of a ministry that is called and faithful to this calling. –6– Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Labor code Kodeks pracy Therefore, first of all, a servant of the true God should know the truth – know what is the truth and what scarcely deigns to pass as such. If he has any doubts whether he has obtained suitable (that is, true) discernment, he ought to judge this discernment as non-authoritative in the strictest sense – as such that will fail (which isn’t God’s will) in the achievement of the objective that is first-rate from the perspective of his Principal. This objective is to authenticate the mandate entrusted to the servant if it will be presented as truth and turns out to be false. The servant who isn’t sure whether he’s speaking the truth is a dimwit, not a servant, and he is under the wrath of the living God, who – as the edicts deemed binding proclaim in unison – gives the Spirit without measure, and what He’s the least stingy with is this conviction, indispensable in the way, that either something is his way or it isn’t. Second, the servant should know much better than those whom he is serving whether someone who passes for a servant is one indeed. Not whether his speech is coherent but whether he himself is made coherent. If he doesn’t know that, even if he was a servant himself, he isn’t able to even put one brick on top of another, so it’s better for him to see the light before he starts nodding in agreement with dimwits instead of skillfully flogging them. Third, a servant must know what he is saying (he doesn’t need to understand it! – the servant is by definition a disciple, and he is learning, if he has reason, to understand what he knows; he can’t, however, understand that which he doesn’t know). He must not contradict himself, even if it implies the necessity to admit a very serious mistake – and rather exactly because of that. By disregarding this need he destroys the foundation of his own faith (cuts the branch on which he’s sitting) and thereby ruins the faith of those who rightly think that God knew what He said and knows what He intends to say. Fourth, a servant needs to show progress. It doesn’t mean that he must know more, but to make better use of the knowledge he has. –7– Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Labor code Kodeks pracy Fifth, a servant can kick his neighbor in the ass, and even smash his face in, and still be a servant. Although he won’t get paid for that in heaven, but if the alternative to this dirty deed would be to leave his skin (which was the specialty of many a charlatan), the Almighty will turn a blind eye to the intoxicating, but small delight flowing from the disgrace of some beast. Roughly speaking, a servant should be hewn from one piece and not wag his tail at even the most delicious bits, so that even at first sight no reporter would have the slightest doubt concerning the fact that he is being paid (for heavy toil, after all) by a terrible miser and scribbler. What prompted me to formulate the elementary rules of the code of the work commissioned by the Highest, which is always quite non-standard, was the discovery of my own ignorance concerning the role of a network certificate of a computer program. A factual and highly morally distinguished correction of my parochial manners referred me to the illustration which displays, like to a child, at least a part of the reasonable intentions of the Creator, accompanying the certifying of my own products. Do sformułowania elementarnych zasad kodeksu zawsze dość nietypowej pracy, jaką zleca Najwyższy, pobudziło mnie zapoznanie własnej ignorancji odnośnie roli, jaką pełni certyfikat sieciowy komputerowego programu. Rzeczowa, opatrzona wysokimi moralnymi dystynkcjami korekta moich zaściankowych manier odwołała mnie do ilustracji, która jak dziecku wykłada także przynajmniej część rozumnych intencji Stwórcy, towarzyszącą nadawaniu certyfikatu własnym wyrobom. I owe it to mister Piotr Skulski, to whose profession my absolutism inconsiderately attributed the characteristics of a machine serving the satisfying of the excessive appetite of passers-by, having overlooked the ordinary fact that it is the very setting of limits to that appetite that should be deemed salutary, and not the possibility of satisfying it. My creditor clarified to me the meaning of the news carried by every certified data package in the following way: Zawdzięczam ją Panu Piotrowi Skulskiemu, którego fachowi moja apodyktyczność przypisała nieopacznie atrybuty automatu do zaspokajania nadmiernego apetytu przechodniów, przeoczywszy ów prozaiczny fakt, że to właśnie wyznaczenie granic temu apetytowi należy uznać za zbawienne, nie zaś samą możliwość jego zaspokojenia. Mój wierzyciel tak oto wyklarował mi znaczenie wieści, jaką niesie z sobą opatrzony certyfikatem pakiet danych: A network certificate informs us that the ‘butterfly.exe’ program that we intend to run from the internet really is a program displaying a butterfly, and not a bloodthirsty virus. A certificate is issued for the program upon the motion of the maker by a renowned (and thus trustworthy) issuer of certificates, and it has the form of a sort of a seal that will be broken by any change of the contents of the program code (e.g. by inserting destructive elements). Booklocker Barnes & Noble –8– Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Labor code Kodeks pracy Transferring this example into my own backyard, I would wish (like the Boss of Skulski Enterprises wished me) to inspire in the Reader that little bit of trust in the designs of the Holy One, which, in difficult moments, he has not so much in the issuer of the certificate, but in his reputation. For it will restore in his mind a certain truly salutary balance that could be compared to the order restored by an antivirus scanner only by a terrible joker. Let the Reader evaluate the intent illuminating this truly pious wish with a measure more personal than the one he usually uses to assess the losses resulting from damaging the operating system of his fallible, but useful machine. Therefore, Reader, if you are addressed by someone who considers himself the servant of the living God, it doesn’t mean that he is one. If he is, he must possess a certificate – not any certificate, but one that inspires trust – such a one that the sole sound of the name of its issuer spreads inside you with a bliss incomparable to any else, with such warmth that your soul won’t be provided with by antifreeze from the newest version of Peter Norton’s package. It has to have something as difficult to name as the hands and face of a father, as the grumble of a lion, the rumbling of a waterfall or the trunk of a mighty oak – like something that people forgot to consider great, because they created maternity houses, bulldozers and armies, dams on rapid rivers and the pride of America. It has to have something that pierces your very soul and encircles you, and you know very well that no earthly law protects you from this brilliance, because every liege and overlord is subject to its authority. Saints used to call this thing the fruit of the Spirit – such a portion of the fullness bestowed on them, before which everyone who has reason, kneels – not in order to worship it, but in order to satisfy their hunger from the branches drooping to the ground under the load. Booklocker Barnes & Noble –9– Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Labor code Kodeks pracy Don’t be afraid if the servant has what I’m talking about, but beware of him if this is what he lacks, even if it’s only this, because he is a liar and he didn’t come to satisfy your hunger, but to kill you. He will paint landscapes in front of your eyes, place you in visions with the greatest of this earth, spread a carpet before you, so your feet won’t hurt, and he will do all that with such mindfulness for your own image that one day you will be even embarrassed at the thought of the appropriate form of compensation with which you paid for your way. And that will be your end. You won’t see anything farther, because the angels will blind you. Emptiness will tear you to pieces, sucking into its insatiable abyss each, even the smallest crumb of long blessed conviction that your days are numbered with the most accurate and most perfect measure. It will grind your sense of decency like in a mortar, for you to feed your near and dear ones with handmade syrup of thoughts foreign to you, bearing the Nothing’s all bad platitude which couldn’t be further from its Solomonic opposite: There is one good upon this earth that shuts the jaws of evil. I to będzie Twój koniec. And if the fathomless generosity of heavenly power espies you among the ruins of human pride and calls you with one nod to a place sheltered from its own anger, you will remember your own sense of obviousness with which you measured God’s decrees. You will remember a thousand of such places where you looked down, searching for some justification for the Almighty, and at that time the only thing that could have absolved Him in your eyes would be if He prolonged your own life, and not if He gave you a new one. A jeśli niezmierzona szczodrość niebiańskiej potęgi wypatrzy Cię pośród ruin ludzkiej pychy i przywoła jednym skinieniem w miejsce, osłonięte przed własnym gniewem, to przypomni Ci się Twoje własne poczucie oczywistości, jakim zmierzyłeś Boże wyroki. Przypomni ci się tysiąc takich miejsc, gdzie spuszczałeś swój wzrok, szukając jakiegoś usprawiedliwienia dla Wszechmogącego i jedyne wówczas, co w Twoich oczach mogłoby Go rozgrzeszyć , to gdyby przedłużył Twoje własne życie, a nie by dał Ci nowe. The answer is quite simple, but not obvious – at least not in the contemporary world, noisy and littered. What distinguishes them is the attitude towards the human mind: my small vainglories are to serve its real needs and capabilities (in the scope of the matters dear to the Galilean and his pupils, of course), whereas the remaining ones (all of them, with no exceptions whatsoever) are to drive this mind into the service of unreal and impossible illusions, to make it controllable and defenseless in the face of true spiritual challenges and dangers. It is an essential concern of serving the truth and if the Reader manages to internalize it, sticking it like an important, vital note on his fridge, he will manage not only to keep his balance on my rollercoaster – as Zuzanna Maria, my brave Translator, operationally called the linguistic shapes of the publication – but also to gain spiritual muscle and acquire the antidote to the venom of the great serpent that encircles with his coils our beautiful, but tainted earth. Of course, the costs of yielding to illusions are seemingly smaller than the costs of obsequiousness towards the truth, but it is only due to the way and mode of payment for the acquired goods that distinguishes between spiritual strategies – for the latter, one pays ahead to a nice person, and for the former, one pays afterwards to a nasty one. That’s how it roughly looks, Reader. Please mind this simple-minded instruction if life has not become wearisome to you. In any event, the devil is not so black as he is painted. . . but much blacker, and that is why it is well to safeguard against him in the right way, valuing short, but substantial lessons of truth. – 12 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web The message and the medium Przekaz i medium th January 12 , 2016 The message and the medium 12 stycznia 2016 Przekaz i medium I have a thought concerning the role of the media in shaping convictions. It is not very revelatory, rather down-to-earth – I would even call it fickle – but so be it, I will share it with my few visitors. Maybe they won’t lynch me. Last year I turned fifty, but despite that I still marvel at the gullibility of my closer and less close acquaintances who base their own conviction about the value of Christ’s service on vote offerings of faith that none of the apostles in my age would even look at – not to mention being willing to spit at them. I am point-blank struck by their inability to embrace simple gospel content for which the disciples of John or Paul would have themselves killed. And I don’t think at all that the reason for this delirious stupor is their emotional or intellectual poverty. It is rather the decline of their inborn predispositions and abilities caused by impersonal media that flatter them, and thus simultaneously the lack of experiences of such authority to judge that demands unambiguous declarations and accordant acts of will, and from whose pillory it is impossible to escape with some kind of switch, nor on the contrary – whose benefits can’t be summoned at every beck and call like it is done in every good pub or decent hospital. Of course, I see the scope of impact of the media in a broader way than it’s usually spoken or written about, so I don’t have an important reason to distinguish in that matter between television, books, priests, pastors, websites or some council of Nicaea. In terms of my own way of looking and the perspectives and directives for believers that are related to it, they are to me only channels facilitating the exchange of information. They are not – as the apostles were formerly – people responsible before God for their words and actions, whom it is worth to believe. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 13 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web The message and the medium Przekaz i medium The point here is not that – to continue this sewage metaphor – no trustworthy news flows through these channels, but that it is contaminated by the environment in which it is being prepared for dissemination and by goals that are lethal to true faith. One might say that it is a cliché for tougher heads. . . maybe even not so much a cliché as a thing easy to be grasped by reason (if one has it), but not at all as easy-to-use as one would like to think and believe. It sounds even ominous to people who can’t do without those luxuries, costly to the soul, like there are many who find it difficult to give up sweets, meat, fat or dairy for more commonplace and altogether quantifiable benefits. Basically, I have already written it somewhere, but only now this thought seems irrevocable to me – one can’t escape it, except when you look for shelter in a cesspool or something much worse. I like spacious places, well-lighted, where the air is fresh and clean and the temperature is bearable, so my Reader will find in my domain only such advice thanks to which it is easier to get to such. Well, I’m thinking – quite unoriginally – that the contemporary man is very wrong in his assessment of how much this information channels stink, because he was born there and has grown accustomed to their stench, not understanding how much the sphere of his everyday experiences differs from the experiences of the lieges of the apostolic heritage. And it requires really powerful spiritual strength to not only present to him this fact, but to make it authoritative to him – that is, necessary in judging everyday matters and balancing real needs of his own soul. As a matter of fact, I don’t know how such strength would have to manifest itself in the life of a specific person. It may depend on personal sensitivity: one man won’t be helped by a bolt from the blue, and another will get back on his feet on hearing one friendly word. I know, however, that without visible manifestations of this power flowing from the wellsprings of life and truth, even a wise and noble man has no chance to withstand the small and great magic of the contemporary media that effectively separate people from the goods and norms known to the Lord’s saints – all the less someone shameless and dumb. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 14 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords th May 18 , 2016 Author interview – Smashwords 18 maja 2016 Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords Do you consider yourself a patriot? Czy czujesz się patriotą? Most of all, I feel that I am a human being of flesh and blood, placed in a specific social, civilizational and cultural setting. Without this feeling, my address couldn’t have happened. Because, however, I have made serious revisions and revaluations in my life, the convictions shaping my patriotism have also undergone changes. Thus, today it has little in common with the things that are usually ascribed to the foundation of nationality in every country – not only Poland. I generally consider my country destitute, stupefied by its idolatry, arrogance and foolishness, badly ruled and venal. I also think that the characteristics that are the object of the pride of its inhabitants are disgraceful and degrading to human condition. Its soothsayers are mythomaniacs and artsy dreamers, and its rulers are moral and spiritual weaklings – unfeeling, with the breath of murderous tyranny behind their backs and a disgusting sense of humor. I know that I am isolated in my impressions, but I am in no way an absolute exception. I am worried and angered by the spiritual state of my nation, but I can’t act nor speak against the truth – I only have the limited right to defend my own convictions. It is limited because in my own country I don’t count among personages who are readily entertained and asked about their opinions. Here, I am only granted the troublesome status of a persona non grata and the attentive readers of the Bible know that well. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 15 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords But in my opinion, the measure of patriotism isn’t the attachment to the existing values and traditions, but rather to those supporting the value of human condition regardless of the time and place given to itself. It follows from the insight that was given me that my nation strongly opposes them (and it is in no way an exception in doing so) and that this opposition will be very costly for my compatriots – not because their imagination is poor, but because they play with real fire and real power from the vision and might of which they have been separated since the dawn of Polish history by shavelings’ boons and ages of ignorance overconfident in its own strength and reason. Even as to a patriot, it is only becoming to me to openly give the lie to their vain hopes and illusions – not at all because they’re vain, but because mine grew out of them because of a strength unknown to Poles. If I wasn’t a patriot, I would have remained silent about them. I am and I feel Polish to the bone – I just don’t like Mickiewicz, Piłsudski, Wałęsa, Wojtyła and a couple of other figures that are commonly associated with Polishness. The formula of the publication is original – there are no known models for it in the history of writing. What are the main objectives of your working decisions? The front matter of the book presents them quite briefly and factually. Their priority is the reconstruction of the gospel testimonies concerning vital precepts of spiritual life. It assumes the existence of a need to revalue certain exegetical degenerations, because they distort the image of the Originator of Christian faith – being thus very harmful (worse than a strong poison to the body) not only to spiritual growth, but above all to the soil in which the growth happens. Tytulatura książki przedstawia je dość zwięźle i rzeczowo. – 16 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords In most cases it is difficult to question the validity of this assumption, because it is based on the factual incompatibility of the literal gospel record with the propagandistic and doctrinal one. It is thus enough to take a good, attentive look at the facts pointed out by me to hear the grinding of the infernal machinery. Still, to most people it won’t be enough, and the book is, in its intent, a point of reference such as a lighthouse to a shipwreck survivor and not such as a McDonald’s neon at the side of a busy highway. Thus, the meaning of significant differences in the choice of appropriate means of expression should be obvious here. In a word, it is rather a survival manual than a menu for those who like raw beefsteaks and rather a tuning fork than the echo of Mozart’s concerts. We don’t advertise the truth here: we don’t offer a prescription for life’s troubles or successes, we don’t tickle palates nor satisfy exquisite tastes. The focus of the investigation procedures and the conclusions drawn from them is set on the issue – cardinal to faith – of obedience to the will of its Originator: If you don’t know his will, you won’t be able to persevere in it. But if you insist on something that openly insults it, you simply don’t stand a slightest chance for heavenly discounts and privileges. Thus, certain linguistic acrobatics in the book serve the retraining, re-practicing of the Reader’s will so that it would be able to voluntarily measure itself against the Lord’s yoke, the taking upon of which has been discouraged for centuries by publicators and spiritual scum of various sorts with admirable success. Pewne językowe akrobacje służą więc w książce wręcz przetresowaniu, przećwiczeniu czytelniczej woli, by mogła ona własnowolnie zmierzyć się z Pańskim jarzmem, do którego podejmowania publikatory i najrozmaitsze duchowe szumowiny zniechęcają od wieków nad podziw skutecznie. In the publication, I don’t deal with politics, social problems or the evaluation of cultural or civilizational achievements of mankind – I even discourage drawing from riches that don’t serve the knowledge of the truth of the sources of knowledge. Instead, I encourage a greater trust in the lie-damaged façade of the biblical testimony, because the goal of the enemies of the truth – especially the enlightened ones – is the weakening of the readers’ attention and focusing it on things that don’t matter on the narrow path of faith and the undermining of the value of commonsense reflection on subjects not assigned by shavelings or the equally dissolute and depleted media. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 17 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords The role of the linguistic means and the unsophisticated literary contrivances is the focusing of attention on the main thrust of the gospel message, showing its internal connections, discourse norms and the style and weight of the references of its crown witnesses. The theatricals serve the exposition of the dissonance between those hard norms and the contemporary evangelistic practice – soft, psychologizing, importunate, twisting itself around the neck and only nominally Christian. Rolą językowych środków i niewymyślnych literackich wybiegów jest koncentracja uwagi na myśli przewodniej ewangelicznego przekazu, ukazanie jej wewnętrznych związków, norm dyskursu oraz stylu i wagi odwołań jego koronnych świadków. Teatralia służą ekspozycji rozdźwięku między tamtymi twardymi normami a współczesną ewangelizacyjną praktyką – miękką, psychologizującą, natrętną, owijającą się wokół szyi a chrześcijańską jedynie z imienia. It isn’t entirely true that libraries lack the models for my speech – it isn’t originality anyway that is the strength of this testimony. It draws heavily from the depths of well-known springs – it only drives away disturbers who can’t afford to face the truth. One can’t learn anything good from me if one doesn’t believe me – I have taken care of that, like the Galilean took care of that in his time. How do you evaluate the perspectives of the reception of this publication? Jak oceniasz perspektywy recepcji tej publikacji? It will be rejected. Regardless of how many readers it will gain – it is, after all, a quite good ware – its message will be disregarded and deprived of credits given to beasts. That’s what this world is like and I won’t change it. However, the fate of this book will be like what happens with the cornerstone – some people will at last see for themselves that it’s telling the truth and giving glory to God, and they will be thanking Him for the gift of grace bestowed upon them and the chance for themselves which they wouldn’t have had if not for it. Zostanie odrzucona. It is a very simple scenario – nothing worth the pens of Coelhos, Pratchetts, Rowlings and other widely read wise guys – it has, after all, already been fulfilled many a time. But I won’t be present to witness it anymore, because I am too big for the contemporary fancy pants and their impassioned entertainments – as long as I’m alive, they will keep away from me. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 18 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords It isn’t easy to believe that faith in Christ has been well-sold fiction for two thousand years and I am the one who understands it best. Nevertheless, this is the very truth given to consideration in my book. If my Reader rejects this truth, he won’t be able to draw salutary conclusions – then it will be to him only a bedtime reading before falling into a sleep that he won’t wake from. I made an effort to save the Reader from that fate, but I can’t decide for him and I evaluate the risk of a serious mistake on his part as very great – similar to the size of the illusions harbored by me twenty years ago. It isn’t, however, my fault that my lighthouse isn’t sufficiently visible – it was, after all, my task only to make it different from the deceptive radiance of the fires of robbers lying in wait for the lives and belongings of shipwreck survivors. I have accomplished my modest task. If someone thinks that I should do a lot more for humanity, let him give me his own assets for revision. I will then come down to earth and show him what the world is standing on. What is your professional experience and how do you earn your living? Profession and earnings are two quite different things. It is well when they are connected, but nowadays it is not so common, because the world is changing and one simply doesn’t keep up with these changes. My start in life wasn’t a success – essentially I have none of the typical, professionally profiled education and that impoverishes my professional experience. Zawód i zarobek to trochę dwie różne sprawy. I would hire myself as a physical laborer in handling of general cargo in a port and then in the preparation of shipbuilding products for transport, and then at last I found employment for longer in a foundry in shredding of cast iron scrap (nasty and very hard work). There, I obtained the qualifications of an overhead crane operator and with those I managed to survive the employment in a few big metallurgic plants in Poland and England. I worked with large-scale steel and cast iron smelting operations and sophisticated maneuvers of enormous castings in the biggest British forge. Of course, I also performed various storage and handling tasks. Zdobyłem tam kwalifikacje suwnicowego i z nimi udało mi się przetrzymać zatrudnienie w kilku dużych metalurgicznych zakładach w Polsce i w Anglii. Obsługiwałem wytopy wielkogabarytowych odlewów żeliwa i stali oraz wymyślne manewry ogromnymi odlewami w największej brytyjskiej kuźni. Oczywiście należały do mnie najprzeróżniejsze prace magazynowe i przeładunkowe. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 19 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords I was a pure-bred overhead crane operator – that means fast, attentive, watchful and precise. People liked to work with me, because knowing the work down there I took care of their bodies and hands like of my own. I felt good in this small, servient role. Unfortunately, I was paid peanuts and I compromised my health, so after the return from England, where I got back on track in order to pay back debts that I had in Poland, I didn’t have much of a choice. Through connections, I got a job in a small movie studio and was quickly introduced to the basics of movie material editing and creating computer animations. It was, however, creative work, to which I never felt the calling and I haven’t found my down-to-earth life perspectives there, especially that I earned less than when operating the overhead crane. Byłem rasowym suwnicowym – tzn. szybkim, uważnym, czujnym i dokładnym. Nevertheless, having become accustomed to the moviemaking toolkit and outlook, I decided to start working in that field on something that I am at least a little acquainted with and that doesn’t demand from me some superhuman energy every day. Currently I produce series of cartographic animations that are often needed in the filmmaking work. Their supply doesn’t match the demand because they necessitate characteristics that are quite rare among computer graphic designers and animators. My earnings are good so far and I don’t have to strain my mind too much, which is to me like a small life miracle, and in any way an unexpectedly happy twist of fate. Your family relations? Twoje stosunki rodzinne? Bad, by and large completely ruined – with the exception of good marital relations with my second wife, Danuta. Unfortunately, we don’t have children, so it’s hard for me to say anything about my parental predispositions or the fruit thereof. Because I am a divorced man, the Christians have shot at me many a time from their ramparts. But they missed – I retained a clear conscience. My matrimonial decisions never did anyone harm – to the contrary, they saved both sides the risk of clashes in which one loses his head and reason. – 20 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords Anyway, according to Jesus’ words I became an adulterer having married my first wife, because she had been divorced – nothing worse could have happened to me in that respect, so willy-nilly I had to consider well whether despite my moral destitution I could count upon the lenience of the Holy One. It turned out that I could, but I won’t disclose here why and on what basis – it would be below even my near-beastly dignity. My mother and stepfather excel at catholic hypocrisy, so I endured it while I had to, benefiting from their costly hospitality for a few years. Right now a total break took place and I am even happy that my mother can afford to openly admit her long-concealed aversion towards me. My younger half-brother is some Buddhist minister, which gives me a complete release from costly brotherly obligations, especially that he turned impudent and presumptuous towards me. I have always been a good boy who sometimes turned into a real devil – whereas now in the eyes of my family I probably seem like a devil in the flesh with an angelic smile and gaze – in any case, my personal assets in the family yard certainly pass for strongly suspect. Indeed, it is hard to please one’s near and dear ones if one loves the truth – I have experienced this in its fullness. In a word, my family horizon recently got a lot brighter and I don’t see in it anyone but my second wife, faithful and savvy. I only regret that I had to wait for this beautiful view for so many years – but those are quite the courteous laments of a lucky man. Yes, it’s true – I like to call things by their names and it doesn’t cost me much. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 21 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords Do you value your own experience? Czy cenisz własne doświadczenie? Not too much. I rather value the lessons resulting from it, the implications upon which I can base my forecasts and plans. The experience itself isolated from the tests of its norms isn’t very valuable in my eyes. I don’t consider myself a very experienced man, even though I feel pain acutely and don’t shun bliss – but I have always been and I still am a good student – that means, one to whom it isn’t hard to see the light of reason nor memorize some concise salutary formula. There is, of course, a couple of experiences that I value more than others, but it isn’t because they happened to me, but because in my life they constituted an encouragement to change my thinking. I would always watch the ruin of my own convictions quite lightheartedly, as if they were never really mine, but borrowed, leased or elaborated – and in any case separated in some mysterious way from the sphere of my innermost sensations and experiences. Apart from the ones described in the book, I could add an example of a less transcendental one here. As a teenager I was often roughed up. These weren’t some tough fights – just the results of the risk, inscribed in the school curriculum, of confrontation with older pupils from the neighboring school for those less willing to learn than to deal blows. Those were plain hooligan provocations – sometimes a kick, sometimes a blow of the fist in the stomach or in the face, some blood and bruises – but nothing very dangerous, even if it awakened fear of pain and humiliation. Do opisanych w książce mógłbym dołączyć tutaj przykład mniej transcendentnego. The appearance of a grown-up nearby always effectively cooled down the imperial inclinations of those juvenile offenders and usually I easily succeeded at not getting in their way, even though we were sometimes forced to share the schoolyard with them. I was an adolescent when we moved to a big metropolis. I felt a little uncomfortable there, but safer that in my hometown. One time, however, in a square located in its very center, on a bright and sweltering day, I heard from one of three burly, ugly chaps sitting below the wall: Hey kid, spare a fag, after which the second of them blocked my way. – 22 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords I had neither cigarettes nor money, but I had a pretty body. I was an athletic boy, but the three of them easily knocked me down to the pavement with the blows of their fists. I don’t know why they were kicking me hard right in the head – maybe because I was protecting it with my hands. I didn’t pass out but it was difficult for me to get up and I was incapable of later surprise that this happened almost in a crowd of surprised and confused passers-by. I didn’t complain, because I had nobody to complain to, and I didn’t know who had beaten me up – and besides, I didn’t like to complain. But this was the first time when I thought that I could die and it doesn’t have to hurt a lot – it is enough that a sensitive spot gets hit by accident, a qualified doctor – or another power of good stopping the power of evil – will be missed at the place of the accident. I started valuing my time then – not yet knowing well how one can enjoy it. Now I know that, but I couldn’t have known it without putting a measure to my own experience – regardless of whether it is good or bad to me. My measure was false at that time, but the very desire to measure with it the thing that I had experienced was right and sincere. Thus, when someone puts their own or someone else’s experience on the balance, regardless of whether it’s poor or rich, good or bad, I always ask what is on the other side of the balance – what is their measure – because it is the measure that endows it with meaning and value. Without it the sole experience – and along with it life, even richest in experiences – doesn’t mean much to me. Every human judgment serving the knowledge of the truth should be a fair one, well-balanced – for only then it supports itself on God’s throne. Unfortunately, most human judgments – even the most equitable ones – don’t serve the knowledge of the truth. For that reason it has neither the authority that faith needs nor the power able to implement the decrees of that authority. I wouldn’t be who I am if I didn’t find a measure for my experiences – but I would be nobody if I didn’t search for it. – 23 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords What measure are you using in your publication – is it the same one that accompanies your life choices? The criteria of my current life judgments are much richer and more precise than those serving the purely linguistic decisions twenty years ago – it should be fairly obvious to anyone who makes use of their own life experiences and learns from those greater than themselves. But the identity of those criteria isn’t different – like a sprout is identical to the plant that grows out of it or like a foundation is identical to the building that is erected upon it. But identity doesn’t mean sameness – Christians have been confusing these two terms, thoughtlessly aping patterns from two thousand years ago and making the powerful apostolic inheritance into a golf course for baboons instead of a garden of the fruit of the powerful Spirit. The language of the book often errs in some ways by exactly such unintentional cloning of norms of linguistic judgments that are opposed to the truth, because it is the language of someone who didn’t yet manage to revise his own inglorious past and doesn’t control well the whole of the objectively difficult message that was entrusted to his care. Język książki grzeszy poniekąd w wielu miejscach właśnie takim bezwiednym klonowaniem przeciwnych prawdzie norm językowego osądu, ponieważ jest językiem kogoś, kto nie zdołał jeszcze poddać rewizji własnej niechlubnej przeszłości i niezbyt dobrze panuje nad całością powierzonego jego trosce, obiektywnie niełatwego, przekazu. In the chapter The authority of truth I make use of the image of a boy placed at the plow precisely in the intention of illustrating the essence of the author’s relationship with the handicraft of his faith. I generalize the pattern there because it concerns every domain and sphere of true spiritual life – not necessarily tied to the need to publish an impetuous volume. The man who would insist on waiting for his own purity and perfection before he would issue his voice in a just cause would never live to experience the closeness of his mirage, for God loves volunteers and grants his ample quotas only to them – regardless of what kind of creep and tramp applies to him. Monumental faith isn’t faith in God but in one’s own image in a mirror handed by liars. Uogólniam tam wzorzec, ponieważ dotyczy on każdej dziedziny i sfery prawdziwego życia duchowego – niekoniecznie związanej z potrzebą publikacji wstrząsającego woluminu. – 24 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords Today, while trying to measure my strength against the matter of the publication, I would use stronger means of expression, simultaneously sparing the readers the expressions of my own feelings, which have no great significance to saints – what I ascertained much later. In many passages I would probably abandon similes, leaving a rough definition and description. I would keep the images in a much smaller part of the book’s content, which would make it more transparent and elegant. Those are not, however – as I already mentioned – my dilemmas. I mention this difference in creative perspective as an example of a distance towards the works of my own hands, which changes and is being shaped with age, and the shape it assumes is a living testimony of norms and faith embodied in human life. A beast will remain a beast – even if it was Dante or Picasso. Worthy human measure isn’t distinguished by how much it gives, but by where it directs its beneficiaries – this direction also never changes. For the sake of busybodies, I would define the criteria of judgment applied by me in the book and in life as commonsense, but I am doing this contrary to the popular conviction that common sense is shared by the majority of mortals. When, for example, in some rudimentary investigation the investigating magistrate ascertains misrepresentations on the part of the witnesses that are of key importance to the case, they are immediately denied credibility – it’s a dictate of common sense. It is also common sense that suggests that the detective disclosing these misrepresentations deserves a credibility mandate (by no means a medal for dedication and courage!) – even if he himself makes some minor errors in the investigation – because, as it were by definition, ex officio, he operates in the space of non-public intentions and objectives, so it is very stupid to suspect that he only wants to charm the judge and the jury with his revelation – thus never allowing the truth to ever come to light. – nawet jeśli on sam popełni w śledztwie jakieś drobne błędy – ponieważ niejako z definicji, z urzędu działa on w przestrzeni niejawnych zamysłów i zamierzeń, w związku z czym bardzo głupio podejrzewać go o to, że swoimi rewelacjami pragnie on jedynie oczarować sędziego i ławę przysięgłych, nie dopuszczając w ten sposób, żeby prawda wyszła kiedykolwiek na jaw. Similar commonsense rules apply in many places and situations where the truth has causal power opposed to falsehood and the stewards of the instruments of its power at least pretend that they care about human life and conscience not as about exchangeable goods. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 25 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords Whereas in the domain of the truths of Christian faith, there lingers a complete breach with common sense, and thus there it doesn’t matter at all whether Zelwan (or whoever else) is right or not, but whether his actions meet the spiritual conjuncture, whether they are adjusted to the evangelizational formulas and homiletic fads. He may measure his own life with his crazy measure, but his madness should by no means infect others. Therefore, it doesn’t really have any social significance (as it did before) whether I myself act in accordance with the truth that I’m preaching, because as a result of homiletic deceptions there are very few who acknowledge the legitimacy of the existence of the need for such accordance at all. Certainly, I am trying to be in accordance with myself and it is becoming increasingly easy to me, but one may obtain the confirmation of the trustworthiness of my declaration only in one place, so if someone really cares to establish where I came from and who gave me the right to judge, he should guess it by himself and try really hard to get to that place. Contrary to some imposing appearances, it isn’t very difficult. What distinguishes your faith from the faith of the adherents of Christ known to you? Although I do know that, my knowledge isn’t reliable enough for it to be helpful to the Reader if he becomes acquainted with it. It is always better when differences of convictions are settled by an impartial arbitration body, and I simply compare myself to others very rarely, because I have no need to. Finally, saying that I have nothing in common with the contemporary adherents of Christ – even though it is subjectively trustworthy, because it is based on a simple-minded feeling – doesn’t serve the truth too well. It is sensible to talk about differences only with reference to some common ground, and I find it difficult to point to exactly this foundation for an authoritative distinction. Of course, I could sink to the level of some joke that would stir the imagination, but it isn’t an appropriate place nor subject for jokes. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 26 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords However, even though roughly, I am able to direct the Reader’s inquisitiveness in that matter, with the reservation that he should verify my directions on his own if he doesn’t want to risk a judgment that he won’t be able to pay himself out of. I think that the most significant difference is the attitude towards the Scripture – after all, this is the difference most clearly seen by me. Of course, there are the secondary matters: rites, folklore, liturgy, literature, experiences, needs – everything that gets the more or less passionate signature of most Christians is to me a heap of useless half-truths and garbage. It is, however, difficult for me to express my implacability on a dump – I would turn out to be dumber than Don Quixote tilting at windmills. In any case, I see them as the fruit of unbelief and the result of separation from real sources of the power that puts human experience in order. For that reason, I can’t uphold the grounds for my own antagonism on that plane – I am too wise for that. It is the fools who think that their outrage at priestly pedophilia and greed sets them among sages, whereas they defile themselves by the very squinting in the direction of others’ filthiness, because such is the power of the evil served by idolatry of every kind. I feel a rather extraordinary respect and genuine admiration for the writings of the apostles and prophets. In my life, I’ve read some well-written books and I am able to write long-winded epistles myself, but nowhere have I met such compression of content in such an economic form. Nothing verbose, nothing random – I simply feel weak in the knees like a child in front of a giant when I as much as approach the shapes of apostolic speech. Compared to them, greatest world literature is pure, infertile claptrap and sophistry. It is astonishing to me how people can be so careless and not comply with the instructions of those titans, but it is rather the bewilderment of a convalescent than outrage – after all, I didn’t absorb my own perspective with my mother’s milk. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 27 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords However, after what I have experienced myself, I can’t look at the contemporary homiletic toil differently than at badly staged, lame and cheap plays, with a worse setting than the performances of puppet theaters for children sometimes have. Of course, in that pseudo-godly racket there is a lot of sumptuous dummies and impressive circus and self-pity accessories, but it can’t be compared in any way to the true apostolic neatness, moderation and invigorating element. A bunch of conceited, loose-tongued and noisy brats; I would feel healthier and safer in the company of junkies and drunkards, one would like to say – but there’s no one to say it to. Do you intend to continue writing? Czy zamierzasz kontynuować pisanie? No, I have no such intention. As Ecclesiastes wisely put it, the writing of many books is wearying to the body and I still feel exhausted after the first one and – I do hope so – the last. I am not a writer and I have never felt like one – I don’t want to lose time for that. Of course, I could be having some conversations nowadays, take part in discussions and dialogues (I could even host those myself), but only when I would clearly see their meaning and purpose. And I don’t. There is no demand for the things that I am able to serve with, and there is no big incentive for me in the participation in some random confrontations of windbags or scribblers. People have a distorted approach to verbal reality – sick and degenerate. They open their mouths and grab their pens or keyboards before they manage to understand themselves what they want to convey and to whom. They eagerly and easily pass judgments over matters that seemingly don’t concern them, but when the light focuses on their own, they immediately lose their creative inspiration and panache, and an open confrontation with a strength like mine simply terrifies them. Ludzie mają wypaczony stosunek do werbalnej rzeczywistości – chory i zdegenerowany. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 28 – Smashwords Amazon Jesus wanted on the web Author interview – Smashwords Wywiad z autorem – Smashwords Currently, I don’t see any space for a discourse in which there could exist a concession for the hard gospel rules of life and faith. Frothiness and verbal shows have become the norm and calling things by their names in almost every public domain results in a murmur of concern about breaching the rules of political, ethical, grammatical, stylistic or denominational correctness. Actually, wherever one goes, he becomes a potential offender, arousing only some gregarious appeals and mumbling entreaties. People don’t need apostolic directives nowadays – they know everything. Of course, a user manual for a new device will satisfy their curiosity, but they see no need whatsoever of searching for truth about God. They have his promises and warranties on creamy-white paper and liturgy and empty rites replace thinking. Everyone has his god in a smartphone – he is, like the interface of a program: personalized. Even the most noble ones misjudge the value of their own assets. Christian scholars bend over backwards to supplement the education of believers in matters pertaining to evolution or other reductionist chicaneries of their peers form the industry, demonstrating their absurdities or the complete lack of will to use reason, but in fact they remain under the influence of lies, because they drain and sterilize human minds instead of teaching people the things that they should know in order to survive. The Lord knows the thoughts of the sages, that they are vain. Vain, stupid and soulless – for behind them there is death and Google, and not hope, consolation, faith and love. It is easy for the big mouths to show off in front of an undemanding audience, pulling it into the company of scoffers, bountifully serving nutriments for its own vanity and cashing in on their magnanimous gestures. It is harder to do by oneself the things that God commanded and speak like He does, and not like stupid publicators that are overcome by hiccupping, nausea and vertigo at the sound of truly good news. Booklocker Barnes & Noble – 29 – Smashwords Amazon Therefore, I will remain on standby and I will be watching out for all those who don’t keep up with the contemporary guides leading their flocks to the abyss. I don’t care a fig for this whole Christian mess and bustle. Nobody has ever paid me for speaking and I have no intention of risking my neck for those who believe paid ostriches, monkeys and clowns in skimpy doublets, because their souls are being seduced by pseudo-godly prattle of these pathetic creatures, surrounded by Christian entourages and ever-smiling Christian bodyguards. Pozostanę więc w odwodzie i będę miał oko na tych, którzy nie dotrzymują kroku dzisiejszym przewodnikom wiodącym swoje stada do przepaści. Guzik mnie obchodzi ten cały chrześcijański kram i rozgadiasz. I will show them my foul mug and disappear as it befits a real human – and they won’t guess until the end of the world what happened or what was broken that they can’t open some stupid gate with their own strength.
