The Arboretum Das Arboretum Arboretum
The Arboretum Das Arboretum Arboretum The lover of free, untrammeled Nature will therefore be most pleased with this region. It will be easy for him to find deepest solitude in dense forest and glade, where there is nothing to disturb his thoughts...’’ (s. 267) Point of interest Pathway from Petzolds plan Proposed Hanging bridge General Plan 2030 The arboretum of Muskau Park was designed by E. Petzold in 1858, and a plan was published in 1863. The arboretum was completed in 1870 with total area of 51.6 hectares, and included 2800 plant species. For about 45 years, until 1995, it was totally neglected. Most of the area now is full of wild plants and covered with newly grown forest. Area A Area B Area C PROJECTS 32 The goals for the future of the arboretum are research, development, and the acquisition, maintenance, and display of plants. The arboretum will display both the diversity of plants and their botanical relationships. The new arboretum retains the historical layout and integrates it with new activities, including a research and experimental area. Contrast between new planting and old vegetation will show the evolution of the arboretum. Existing trees will provide the basic structure or ‘backbone’ of the design, enhanced with new planting. 1863 2002 Original Plan from Petzold 2010 Comparison Plan from Petzold and Forest not from Petzold Comparison Plan from Petzold and Forest not from Petzold Forest Research Area and Point of Interest Secondary Forest and Residential Area Forest Research Area and Point of Interest Pathway and Residential Area Pathway from Petzold and New Pathway Pathway from Petzold and New Pathway Die wichtigsten neuen Bereiche sind der Wald (z.T. verschattet, hoher Humusgehalt), der Waldrand (sonnig und warm, im Norden schattig und kühl) und der sonnige baumfreie Bereich. The arboretum will include new major area classifications aimed at imitating existing natural plant communities. Woodland Areas are partially shaded, with soils high in humus. Edge of Woodland Areas are transition zones that vary based on orientation. Open, Sunny Areas are at the edges of ponds or shorelines. Historical elements from Petzold plan help define the arboretum’s program. The old pathway will provide the “backbone” for the design and will be enhanced with new nodes. These are based on the topography of the area. New experimental grounds will be located within the forested area. PROJECTS 33
