Olympic Awards Olympic Order At its meeting in Montreal on 12th July 1976, chaired by Lord Killanin, the Council of the Olympic Order studied the different proposals that had been submitted. In accordance with its regulations, the Council submitted the following honours list for the 1976 Olympic Order to the Session, which approved it: Silver Albert Demaurex (Switzerland); Paul Anspach (Belgium); Harold Austad (New Zealand); Walter Wulfing (Germany); Daniel Ferris (United States); Jesse Owens (United States); Hector Paysse Reyes (Uruguay). Albert Demaurex Paul Anspach Daniel Ferris The 1976 Olympic Cup has been awarded to the town of Innsbruck for its splendid organisation, at short notice, of the XIIth Winter Games. Bronze Zofia Mironova (USSR); Walter Jhung (Korea); Antonio Dos Reis Carneiro (Bresil); Cleanthis Paleologos (Greece); Helmut Behrendt (German Democratic Republic); Haim Wein (Israel); Abderrahman Khatib (Morocco). This honours list, the second since the Olympic Order’s creation in 1975, emphasises the high nature and qualities needed for its aspirants. Secretary General from 1929 to 1950 when he became Treasurer. Was technical delegate at the 1936, 1948 and 1964 Games, and judge in 1968 and 1972. Founder of the FIH. Professor Zofia Sergueivna Mironova (USSR), traumatology surgeon, Doctor of Science, Emeritus Master of Sports of the USSR, member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Doctors, doctor of the USSR delegation at the Olympic Games since 1956. Her work in the field of sports traumatology and the extension of sports activity is respected throughout the world. Mr. Walter Jhung (Korea), for his untiring activity on behalf of the Olympic Movement since 1947, both as an organiser, leader and companion and as member of the Asian Games Federation. Mr. Antonio D OS Reis Carneiros (Brazil), founder of the first basketball championships in Rio de Janeiro, one of the most active propagators of sport and the Olympic Movement on the South American continent. President of the first Brazilian basketball federation in 1934, he was elected Vice-President of the International Federation in 1948 and then President of the FIBA from 1960 to 1964. Member of the PASO. Mr. Cleanthis Paleologos (Greece), a graduate of the National Physical Education Academy of the University of Athens, of which he has been Director since 1964. Member of the Hellenic Amateur Athletic Association since 1961. Author of several publications on sport. A very valued lecturer at the International Olympic Academy’s sessions since its foundation in 1961. Vice-President of the IOA and member of the Hellenic Olympic Committee. Mr. Helmut Behrendt (German Democratic Republic), past athlete and footballer, one of the founders of the modern sports movement of his country. Member, Vice-President or President of the many national sports organisations. Secretary General of the NOC of the GDR since 1951 and now an honorary member. Mr. Haim Wein (Israel), founder of the Israel Sports Federation, Vice-President of the NOC since 1966, representative of his country at a large number of congresses and sports meetings, also one of the founders of the Maccabian Games in 1932. Mr. Abderrahman Khatib (Morocco), lawyer at the Bar of Casablanca, former athletics champion and a great sportsman, President of several sports clubs, former Minister of Youth and Sport, and special adviser on questions of sport in Morocco. Mr. Paul Anspach (Belgium), already holder of the Mohammed Taher Trophy in 1951. After being Olympic individual and team épée champion in 1912, he was one of the founders of the Fédération Internationale d’Escrime in 1913, its Secretary-Treasurer and later its President from 1932 to 1939 and from 1946 to 1950. Mr. Harold Iver Austad (New Zealand), leader of the New Zealand team in 1928, Chairman of the New Zealand Olympic Association from 1952 and then President since 1960. Was delegate or President of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association from 1936 to 1966. Chef de mission of the New Zealand team at the Rome Olympic Games in 1960. Mr. Walter Wulfing (Germany), President of the German Rowing Federation and member of the FISA, founder of the German Sports Federation, member of the German NOC since 1951. Rowing champion. One of the mainsprings of the Organising Committee for the Games of the XXth Olympiad at Munich in 1972. Mr. Daniel J. Ferris (USA), member of the United States Olympic Committee from 1928 to 1965. Representative of the USA at the congresses of the International Athletics, Swimming, Weightlifting and Basketball Federations. Member of the IAAF Council since 1952. Mr. Jesse Owens (USA), born in 1913, one of the most famous Olympic champions after his quadruple victory at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin (100 metres, 200 metres, 4 x 100 metres and long jump) since when he has constantly devoted himself to the defense of sport and the ethics of sport. Dr. Hector Paysse Reyes (Uruguay), lawyer, statesman, President of the Uruguayan NOC (1938-1976) and twice President of the PASO. President of the national federations of basketball, fencing and bowling, Honorary President of the Montevideo Panathlon Club. 506
