Our intent was never to diminish the importance of the Black Madonna, but rather augment her elevated role in the history of our ancestors. As Fr. Jerzy pointed out in last week’s bulletin, Mary holds such an important position in the spiritual consciousness of the nation that she was actually crowned Queen of Poland in 1656, the historical period known as the Swedish invasion of Poland. Czêstochowa played a prominent role in this war with the Swedes attempting to capture the monastery. Officially, the reborn Polish State petitioned the Vatican to formally acknowledge Mary’s title as her Queen, such official acknowledgement having been granted in 1923. The icon referred to as the Black Madonna is often he object of numerous inaccurate conjectures regarding various aspects of that most holy representation of the Mother of God. Take, for example, the color. The reason the painting is so dark is primarily due to quite natural causes, having been painted on either teak or mahogany, both woods that carry a darker pigment in their makeup. In addition to this fact there is also the fact of years of incense and candle smoke which contributed to the discoloration. Likewise, the scars on her face were put there in 1430 by the invading Hussites, an actual historical fact. So much to learn, so little time! We will never be the same. A powerful symbol of what happened to us is the rectory building, which for months now has been emptied of everything except its memories. Now is the time to get on with the physical healing of our broken building. Although the insurance claim has been settled for several weeks now, and the contractor has been ready to start the restoration work, the parish membership and its leadership councils have agreed that now is an opportune time to make some necessary improvements in the building. That decision has The rectory has delayed the start of the work, been emptied of because the builders need to everything except know exactly what we plan to do before they can start. This, its memories. in turn, has meant several walks through the building with the architect. The drawings are complete, and subcontractors will have sent their separate bids to us by this upcoming week Monday. Please set aside some time next Saturday evening at 6:30 PM for a parish meeting to discuss the rectory restoration and renovation. At that time, we will hear from members of the Rectory Task Force established by the parish leadership to coordinate this complicated work. They will describe for us the ten phases for work suggested by the architect. Each phase is listed in order of priority, from what is absolutely necessary to what is more of an enhancement for the sake of beauty and convenience. They also will share the expected costs involved, as well as the beginning of an appeal to meet these costs. There will be an opportunity for parishioners to ask questions and to express some preferences, which the Task Force and the leadership councils can take into account. As people can see, the work on the exterior of the building is already well underway. Soon they will be ready to begin on the inside as well. The whole project is expected to take a full year from now, and to cost in excess of one million dollars. Although the insurance claim will pay to restore the building back to the way it had been, any changes will have to be paid for by the parish. Please be assured that none of the changes are extravagant. For example, the second floor (where the priests live) has eight bedrooms — and one bathroom. The bathroom on the first floor was never intended for use by the general public, which it now clearly must be. The kitchen is also a public space in a way it had never been designed to handle. The living room is right on the main floor and affords no privacy for the priests or their guests. There is not enough office space to accommodate the growing demands of our vibrant parish community. Through the whole process, please keep in your prayers all who are working hard on this difficult and necessary task. Fr. Stanis³awa. Jego rodzina zawiadywa³a wioskami Raba i Szczepanów w ziemi krakowskiej. Stanis³aw przyszed³ na œwiat oko³o roku 1030. Pocz¹tkowe nauki pobiera³ w rodzinnym domu, co by³o normalnym wówczas zwyczajem. Jednak dalsze kszta³cenie przebiega³o ju¿ poza granicami Polski - w Belgii i Pary¿u. Podobna ambicja cechowa³a ówczesnego króla, do której do³¹cza³ siê jeszcze porywczy charakter monarchy. Wczeœniej czy póŸniej, nale¿a³o siê spodziewaæ starcia dwu silnych osobowoœci. Kiedy król, anga¿uj¹cy siê w liczne konflikty w pañstwach oœciennych, coraz d³u¿ej przebywa³ poza granicami kraju, poddani zaczêli narzekaæ na taki stan rzeczy. W³adca, po powrocie, coraz ostrzejszymi metodami przywraca³ karnoœæ. W takiej sytuacji niestosownoœæ zachowañ króla wyrazi³ publicznie biskup Stanis³aw. Prawdopodobnie to by³o bezpoœredni¹ przyczyn¹ targniêcia siê w³adcy na s³ugê Bo¿ego. Mêczeñski akt dokona³ siê 11 kwietnia 1079 roku, kiedy to król wtargn¹³ do kaplicy œw. Uroczyste og³oszenie kanonizacji w Polsce nast¹pi³o 8 maja 1254 roku. W osobie Œwiêtego mo¿emy i powinniœmy szukaæ wzorców do godnego chrzeœcijañskiego ¿ycia. ks. Jerzy ST. STANISLAUS CLEVELAND, OHIO SAINT STANISLAUS FEAST DAY A GREAT SUCCESS NEW PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL Many thanks to all who made a tremendous success of the opening celebration for our “Stanislavian Year!” The liturgy was festive and glorious, a fine tribute to a true model of holiness. Polish organizations added their own flair and color, and the music was up to our usual grand standard. The newly dedicated reliquary shrine will inspire thousands of people for generations to come. The first annual Banquet of Honor, held at the Polish American Cultural Center on 65th and Lansing, was an elegant affair that generated good will as well as a financial boost for Saint Stanislaus Parish. Congratulations to the recipient of the first annual “Four Eagles Award,” Ben S. Stefanski II. This award is given to a person or organization that demonstrates extraordinary commitment to the Saint Stanislaus community as we live out our spiritual, educational, cultural, and community mission. There will be several other events throughout the coming year, culminating in an even grander celebration on May 8, 2004 — a closing liturgy that will recommit us to living the legacy of our patron. “MOTION TRIO” POLISH ACCORDIONISTS The election at last weekend’s Masses for the new Parish Pastoral Council had great participation from all segments of our parish community. The Council is made up of nine members, six elected and three appointed. Each year, two of the six elected members end their terms. The appointed members are named by the pastor to serve for one year. The parishioners elected to serve for a three year term are Betty Dabrowski and Chris Luboski. Congratulations! Fr. Michael has also appointed Karen Neuman, Michael Leahy, and Witold Sztalkopfer to serve for one year. Many thanks to the outgoing members of the council who have served their parish well: Allen Guisinger, Debra Tracz-Ramser, Sophie Debrowski-Pierce, and Bob Bertsch. Each of the candidates that did not end up on the Pastoral Council has agreed to serve the parish on one of our Commissions. Three accordionists “Motion Trio” from Krakow, Poland will perform at the Polish American Cultural Center (6501 Lansing Ave) on Sunday May 11, 2003 at 8:00 PM. “Motion Trio” a is world renowned group that has performed in many cities across Poland, Europe, Canada and the United States. 2003 CATHOLIC CHARITIES ANNUAL APPEAL PLEASE BE GENEROUS! Saint Stanislaus Parish was greatly helped by the presence of counselors during the weeks after our tragedy last December. Several counselors provided a professional listening ear and compassionate heart for our students as well as for numerous adults. The service is still available to us. Many hours were given to us — free of charge! Where did this support come from? It came from the generosity of people who support the annual Catholic Charities Appeal. You may have received a letter from Bishop Pilla requesting your financial support for the 2003 Annual Appeal. An early pledge to Catholic Charities eliminates a follow-up phone call later in the year and reduces costs. In 2003, 15.62% of the parishioners at St. Stanislaus contributed $6,058.00 to Catholic Charities. This year more than ever, your help is needed for programs that benefit the disabled, children, families, elderly, homeless, and working poor of our Diocese. Donations can be made securely online at www.clevelandcatholiccharities.org. SILENT CARNIVAL How can you go to a carnival and not make noise? This was asked by anew parishioner recently, when he heard about the Silent Carnival coming up. But we all know what it means — a chance each week for someone to win fifty dollars, and a grand drawing on Father’s Day for ten prizes of $100 and ten for $150. What does it take to get into this? Send five bucks in your yellow-colored “Silent Carnival” envelope, and wait for the phone call! The earlier you get it in, the better your chances of winning. RCIA REUNION MASS AND PICNIC On May 19, 2003 this years RCIA class comes to an end. This last class will be a mass and picnic for all of this year’s and past year’s classes. If you were a catechumen, candidate, confirmand, sponsor, catechist or teacher from prior years please make sure to come and celebrate with this years class as we send them to continue their journey. We would love to see all past members. Mass will be at 6:30 PM with a picnic to follow. We ask all those who attend to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Please contact Diane Bulanda at 440/439-7323. “MOTION TRIO” POLSCY AKORDEONIŒCI Grupa trzech polskich akoredeonistów z Krakowa - “Motion Trio” wyst¹pi w Polsko-Amerykañskim Centrum Kultury (6501 Lansing Ave) w dzisiejsz¹ niedzielê 11 maja o godz. 8:00 wieczorem.
