DMSO rozkłada się w trakcie usuwania go podczas destylacji, zanieczyszczając oligoeterole produktami swojego rozkładu i nadając im nieprzyjemny zapach. Otrzymane oligoeterole poddawano spienianiu w reakcjach z 4,4’-diizocyjanianem difenylometanu (zawierającym ok. 30% izocyjanianów trójfunkcyjnych) oraz wodą, otrzymując sztywne pianki poliuretanowe zawierające w swej strukturze pierścienie perhydro1,3,5-triazynowe, 1,3,5-triazynowe i purynowe. Abstract ABSTRACT In reactions of some azacyclic compounds, for example, melamine or isocyanuric acid with an excess of oxiranes, such as ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, oligoetherols containing 1,3,5-triazine rings or perhydro-1,3,5-triazine rings in their structure are obtained. The drawback of this synthesis method is the lack of good solvents of melamine and isocyanuric acid in which the process can be carried out because the heterocycles are soluble only in few solvents, for example, in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and in water. In practice the reactions of oxiranes with isocyanuric acid and melamine are the most often carried out in DMSO as they easily react with water producing glycols and polyglycols as by-products. After finishing the reaction, toxic and high-boiling solvents must be distilled. DMSO decomposes in the course of removing it during distillation and it pollutes oligoetherols with the products of its decomposition and it gives them an un-pleasant odour. Another method of obtaining oligoetherols with the use of formaldehyde and above-mentioned azacyclic compounds was described in the literature. At first, the reactions of these compounds with formaldehyde are carried out and their hydroxymethyl derivatives are obtained. The advantage of this type of syntheses is that they do not require organic solvents to be used in case of isocyanuric acid and melamine as the hydroxymethyl derivatives of the above-mentioned azacycles usually are well-soluble directly in oxiranes with the use of a little bit of water. The main drawback of this method is that the formaldehyde which is blocked by one molecule of oxirane is released and it is rearranged to the end of the etherol chain. Therefore, the bigger excess of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide must be used for obtaining oligoetherols from the hydroxymethyl derivatives than in direct reactions of azacyclic compounds with oxiranes. On the other hand, the obstacle to using the mentioned oxiranes is that they are toxic, flammable, they make explosive mixture with the oxygen and the process needs pressure reactors to be used because of the low boiling point (14ºC for ethylene oxide and 34ºC for propylene oxide). Therefore, epoxy compounds, which could be ecologically friendly solvents as well as reagents of azacyclic compounds, are still searched. Moreover, the epoxy compounds should not require using toxic and high-boiling solvents of the mentioned azacycles, which, after the process is finished, should be removed from the post-reaction mixture by distillation. In this thesis a detailed research on the use of glycidol to obtain intermediates with azacyclic chains as the precursors of the synthesis of oligoetherols which are suitable to obtain foamed polyurethane materials with enhanced thermal resistance was carried out. In Abstract the work a new, solvent-free method of obtaining oligoetherols with the use of isocyanuric acid, uric acid, melamine and glycidol was presented. In this method the reaction occurs directly between the azacyclic compound and the hydroxyalkylating agent, and next between the obtained intermediate and the alkylene carbonates as the agents which hydroxyalkylate in place of oxiranes. It is important to mention that the alkylene carbonates as opposed to the oxiranes are non-flammable, non-toxic, ecologically friendly, they belong to, so called, green chemistry solvents and they give oligoetherols with the analogous structure. The analytic research carried out, such as determination of an acid number, a percentage content of unreacted alkylene carbonate and an epoxy number of the reaction mixtures as well as instrumental analyses, i.e. infrared, proton magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopies of the products, contributed to gaining information about the course of the reaction as well as to determining the structure of the next intermediate and oligoetherols. Some physical properties of the obtained oligoetherols in terms of temperature were studied, such as density, viscosity, surface tension and refractive indices. It was concluded that they can be used to obtain rigid polyurethane foams. In the cases tested, the glycidol was not only a reactant in the reaction with azacyclic compound but also its solvent; it is considerably less toxic than oxiranes and because of its high-boiling point the process can be conducted in typical non-pressurized reactors which are used in chemical industry. Moreover, it increases the functionality of the obtained oligoetherols in comparison with those which have been synthesized so far and therefore it allows to obtain polyurethane foams with bigger network density and with better durability properties and sometimes better thermal resistance. The obtained oligoetherols were exposed to foaming in reactions with diphenylmethane 4,4’-diiso-cyanate (containing 30% of trifunctional isocyanates) and with water and rigid polyurethane foams were obtained, which contained perhydro-1,3,5-triazine, 1,3,5-triazine and purine rings in their structure. Some physical properties of the obtained foams were studied, such as apparent density, water uptake, the average size of pores, dimensional stability, thermal resistance, compression strength and flammability. It was concluded that the obtained foams have similar properties to the classical, rigid polyurethane foams but they are characterized by much bigger thermal resistance. Another advantage of the foams obtained in this work is the fact that in general their compression strength increases when exposed to higher temperature and it is presumably connected with additional cross-linking of the foam in those conditions. It allows to obtain polyurethane insulation materials which have much bigger thermal resistance than the ones which have been used so far and they can be used in many branches of industry as Abstract thermal insulation. Therefore, the range of products produced by the industry can be extended. The additional merit is the fact that the reaction of azacyclic compounds with glycidol is exothermic and the heat evolved can be used to heat the reaction mixture with no necessity to supply energy from the outside, which will additionally lower the production costs. The research conducted in this work proved that it is possible to extend the devised method for synthesis of oligoetherols with other azacyclic compounds containing amine and amide groups, for example, adenine, guanine, melamine isocyanurate, melem, compounds which are very difficult to dissolve in organic solvents. Furthermore, it seems that the devised method can be easily transferred from a laboratory scale to the technical one.
