Mgr Paweł Zakrajewski Instytut Języka Angielskiego Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach Promotion, Vision or a Welcome? – Genre Analysis of the Welcome Addresses of the Presidents of American State Universities Promocja, wizja czy powitanie? W szeroko pojętym drugiej części rozdziału dyskursem, gatunkiem, drugiego zaprezentowano polemikę nad analizą gatunkową oraz podstawowymi założeniami i celami krytycznej analizy gatunku. Rozdział III przedstawia cechy generyczne mowy powitanej rektora uczelni. Część druga rozdziału IV koncentruje się na analizie leksykalnogramatycznej wybranych środków językowych, które wg. reprezentatywne dla szeroko-pojętego dyskursu reklamy i promocji. autora rozprawy są SUMMARY The dissertation aims at analyzing a new for Polish textlinguistics genre which is realized through the hypertext, namely a welcome address of the president of a university. The choice of the American State Universities is not accidental, as it is connected with the fact that higher education in the US, even if provided by the state, is not free of charge. As a result, state universities are trying to attract the greatest number of students, which is important in order to survive in the dense educational services market. That is why, a widely developed university promotional mechanism implements a variety of different tools, both those which are typical of the marketing system and also those which represent the field of public relations, in order to create a positive image of the university and, at the same time, reach the greatest number of recipients. Another reason for the attempt to make universities more attractive places might be the fact that a growing number of parents, who pay for their children’s education, are deciding to move their children from public universities, including state ones, to smaller, but significantly prestigious private universities. The above mentioned factors force the state universities to implement a larger number of advertising and public relations tools. For this reason, it is assumed that the welcome address /welcome speech of a university president might be classified to the colony of promotional genres proposed by Bhatia and also the promotional genres of academic discourse examined by Staskova which implement various linguistic marketing tools (broadly understood language of advertising and promotion) in order to promote and, at the same time, broaden the process of marketization of educational services offered by the university. In order to examine the problem of the promotional value of university president welcome addresses a corpus of 95,172 running words has been prepared upon 331 welcome addresses which were extracted from the websites of American state universities. The decision upon extracting the welcome addresses from the university websites is simple – they are the only medium through which the welcome address is released. The dissertation consists of four chapters. Chapters I and II are strictly theoretical and concentrate on the following issues: providing the definition of a welcome address and identifying the addresser-addressee relationships, in other words, the attempt of allocating the welcome address in the mass media communication models is provided; describing the medium of the realization of the welcome address, i.e. defining the Internet as a tool of communication. Chapter I also analyses the notion of marketing, with special consideration of the welcome address as the element of marketing mix. Chapter II centers on the terms and schools which develop the notions of the language of success and promotion. Additionally, Chapter II evaluates the definition of the term text and presents the characterization of hypertext, as the welcome address is a hypertextual genre. The second part of Chapter II presents the discussion on broadly understood issues of discourse, genre and genre analysis. Also, basic principles of critical discourse analysis are presented. Chapter III presents generic features of the welcome address. The chapter depicts the results of the research of the gathered corpus. During the analysis nine subtypes of a welcome address of a university president have been recognized. The analysis is supported by the description and discussion over the selected subtypes. Chapter IV consists of two main parts; the first part depicts the results of the quantitative-qualitative analysis of the collected corpus of welcome addresses. Thus, the register (word, sentence number), readability indices with the consideration of the readability formulas used in the US are presented. Moreover, top frequent lexemes which are crucial in the second part of Chapter IV, are presented and discussed. The second part of Chapter IV concentrates on the lexicogrammatical analysis of the selected language tools which, according to the author of the dissertation, are representative of the broadly understood discourse of advertising and promotion.
