Stewardship Note: In today’s Gospel, the vineyard owner says, “I am free to do as I please with my money, am I not?” We are likewise free. Is a generous return to the Lord in thanksgiving for His many blessings among the choices we have made? TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 21, 2014 Turn to the LORD for mercy; to our God, who is generous in forgiving. - Isaiah 55:7b SEEK THE LORD In today’s opening reading, Isaiah urges us to “seek the LORD” who is “near” and can be “found”. Then Isaiah says God’s ways are as high above our ways “as the heavens are above the earth”. So we search, not because God is hiding, but because our tendencies are so different from God’s ways that we get lost. How are God’s ways so high above our ways? The example Isaiah gives is that God’s way is to be “generous in forgiving”. And our way? We try to be “fair”. You hurt me, so then I hurt you back, just as hard. Then, of course, you . . . And on it goes. In today’s Gospel Jesus teaches that God is not “fair” like that. Instead, God is so generous we can hardly understand it. The same wage for one hour as for a whole day of work? Not fair! “Seek the Lord,” and we might find a God who calls us to be, not fair, but generous beyond expectations. This week’s second collection is for the Religious Education Program (CCD) to provide text books, audio visual materials for our students and various expenses for the mandatory retreats including our confirmation class. Next weekend’s second collection is designated for the Fall Catholic School Appeal. Reminder: Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21st at St. Paul’s Cathedral at 3:00pm. MASS BOOK FOR THE YEAR 2015 Beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 23rd, we will be accepting reservations for masses for the year 2015. Weekday masses ($10) and weekend and Holy Day masses ($15 are available on a first come-first-serve basis. Rectory hours are 9:00am until noon and 1:00pm until 4:00pm on Mon, Tues., Wed. and Fri. (closed on Thursdays). Telephone requests will be taken only from those who are handicapped and unable to come to the rectory. The best gift offered for family members on special occasions is to offer the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The Eucharistic sacrifice is the most effective prayer and therefore should be requested for the deceased and living alike. It has been a tradition that people request a mass on their wedding anniversaries, birthdays, special events and for their children. Page 3 1– 25 CLUB NEWS Congratulations to the following grand prize winners drawn at the September 13th 1-25 Club banquet: $500 - Gladys Dowgiewicz; $200 - Marie Adams; $100 - Karen Lefebvre; $75 Bill Nartowt; and $50 - Barbara Piechocki. Thank you to all! NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH On Wednesday, Sept. 24th at 7:00 the Knights of Columbus of St. Joseph Basilica will join parishioners and friends for our weekly Novena, Devotion and Mass to our Patron Saint. Father Gregory Zielinski will be celebrant and homilist. Anyone visiting the St. Joseph Shrine in Montreal Canada is overwhelmed by the number of crutches and canes left in the Shrine as a result of miraculous healings. In addition there are many more or less expensive gifts that decorate the Icon of St. Joseph or in adjacent chapel left in the spirit of gratitude. There are volumes of personal notes and messages again in thanksgiving for particular blessings. Miracles happen in many places where there is faith and human effort. ANNUAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL APPEAL The media in recent months seem to be focusing more and more on the many crimes and abuse of the children. The reporters conclude that this is happening as a result of demise of the family and disintegration of the values in the society. Quite often the crimes are committed by the youth whose attorneys claim that they could not tell right from wrong at the time of crime. It seems that most of us are aware that moral values are disappearing, and yet not much is done about it. Strangely enough Catholic schools, where the values are primary component of the education, are not supported financially by the state or federal government despite the fact that parents are paying taxes just like parents whose children attend public schools. If you compare the cost of educating one child in public schools, it varies from $15,000 to $24,000 depending on the state. The cost of educating a child at St. Joseph School is about $5,500, while tuition charged to parishioners is only $3,500, so that the parents could afford to take advantage of this opportunity for their children. The difference in the cost comes from many fundraisers. Catholic schools do more for less. Next weekend, September 27-28, second collection is being taken in all the parishes for the Catholic schools. Parishes that operate schools retain the collection for their own school. Others may forward it to the chosen school or send it to the Diocese. Your September packet includes a special envelope for this collection. Please be generous. We need each one of you in order to continue our mission. Many of you are graduates of this school, or your children graduated from St. Joseph’s. Even if they don’t live in the area, please reach out to them to give back . There was never more urgent time than now. My też mamy takie prawo. A my? My staramy się być sprawiedliwi. Jeżeli Ty mnie zranisz, to ja zranię Ciebie. Nowenna do sw. Józefa będzie w srodę, 24 wrzesnia o 7pm. Celebransem i kaznodzieją będzie ks. Grzegorz Zielinski, a statuę wniosą do sanktuarium Rycerze Kolumba.
